Is this tropeworthy/Chairs?

Go To

Oftentimes here in Trope Talk, we get questions about whether or not a given trope is tropeworthy enough, or is an example of the kind of non-tropes discussed in People Sit on Chairs. These threads are extremely frequent, and per discussion in the TRS meta thread, this megathread was created.

This will be a centralized place to ask: is this article I found tropeworthy? Does it convey meaning or is it used to tell the story, or is it just something that happens to exist in a work? Ask here, and hopefully you will get the answers you need.

Remember, something that is "(people sit on) chairs" means it's happenstance or conveys no meaning. Something that also happens in real life, is common, is rare, or seems minor is not the same as being chairs.

As an additional note, keep this in mind when bringing tropes in, as noted by amathieu13:

a trope not being chairs/being deemed tropeworthy =/= the trope lacks any and all issues. It just means that the idea itself is fine in theory.

What do the others think? Should we make some cleanup on Sequential Artist? Or does it need a more drastic approach?

[up][up]I know, Most Writers Are Writers has been under discussion due to its non-descriptive name, too.

[up]A cleanup would at least get rid of the "comic artists exist" examples, so [tup] to that.

I personally feel that it needs a rename, though, because the current name is super chairs-y.

Not sure if it this would be the correct thread, but I'd rename Sequential Artist as "Recursive Sequential Artist"; just to emphasize the function of a sequential artists' Author Avatar or surrogate.

Is Fantasy Helmet Enforcement really tropeworthy? I don't know if it has enough merit to be a TIA, since Free-Range Children tend to protect each other whenever they're side-by-side anyways, children's show or not (so narrowing it down to helmets might be a little arbitrary).

From Most Writers Are Writers:

Interestingly, such characters are only occasionally Author Avatars.
In other words, it's not about writer characters as Author Avatars, just about writer protagonists in general.

Sequential Artist came up less than a year ago; see also my remarks at that time.

Just tried to check the wicks to Sequential Artist, it currently has 178.

I checked one of those wicks, and it was one that I thought was the most improbable page to have a link to Sequential Artist: it was "Recap.Fazbear Frights Into The Pit.
Well, it was about this character, Oscar, going back in time to the 80s to confront one of the animatronics of Five Nights at Freddy's.
And between all of this, some troper wanted to remind us that "Sequential Artist: Oswald is noted to be an aspiring comicbook artist, and he oftem sketched in his notebook".

Looking back, I should've deleted that entry. Is it relevant to anything else in the work? Can more context be added, if it has any context at all? Is Oswald meant to be an Author Avatar or just to show off the creator's knowledge in sequential art, assuming it is a comic in the first place, and that the creator is also interested in comics?

I don't know anything about the work, but it's literature, so it's not a sequential artist writing a sequential artist protagonist. I personally think it sounds like "sequential artist exists."

It's a book based on a video game franchise made by a man who isn't a comic artist. So.

I don't want to look like I wanna change the subject, but should we discuss Non-Ironic Clown and I Hit You, You Hit The Ground?

The latter in particular had a lot of issues: I even proposed to cut its Playing With page in the cut list earlier today, because its "playing with"s were just variations on characters saying "me hit u n u hit grund"; I haven't got any notifications about it yet.
The description on the main page also kinda pissed me off; it could be summed up as "This is when a character says 'I hit you, and you hit the ground', and that Stock Phrase is Exactly What It Says on the Tin", which instead made it very bad at explaining what the trope means.
I guess there's a sliver of tropeworthyness in I Hit You, You Hit The Ground (a strong character boasting), but lemme tell ya, this trope was one of the reasons No New Stock Phrases was allowed to exist.

I'm being serious. The Trope Repair Shop is full, so I can't bring either Non-Ironic Clown or I Hit You, You Hit The Ground there. If we discuss them, we must do it here.

Is this thread dead?

That isn't how it works. You still need to go to TRS. If you want to help open slots, then help close threads. We can discuss them here but we can do nothing else.

As for the tropes themselves:

  • Non-Ironic Clown: It is true that Monster Clowns have seemingly overtaken traditional clowns in fiction, but it does seem like Non-Ironic Clown exists more so out of contradiction than anything in particular. There might still be some valid tropes regarding traditional clowns, however; maybe about how fictional clowns are depicted as always cheerful?

  • I Hit You, You Hit The Ground: While old Stock Phrases are largely grandfathered in (as far as I’m aware of), this one isn’t really thriving, given that it seems to be rather niche.

What's the deal with Can't See a Damn Thing? Just "Blindness exists"?

It's a Super-Trope. Blindness is used for many plot devices, sometimes for humor and sometimes for drama. It's definitely not chairs.

I think I agree with MFE. The act of making a character blind seems inherently meaningful for a story since it's always going to impact the plot somehow.

I dunno if we need examples of the supertrope, but it does feel like a tropeworthy concept

I think the problem is that it's not literally blindness-specific; it seems to be a catch-all for any time a character can't make out what's in front of them.

I think there's still something to that, though it being blindness specific would make it stronger.

Perhaps, but it just makes me realize we lack a more general Dramatic Slo-Mo trope.
