It's crazy that Barbie and Oppenheimer are going to be much more similar thematically than previously thought.

[up][up] Alright, but imma be shocked if this movie gets anything harsher than a PG rating.

Yeah I'm not super sure if mortality is gonna be a big theme of the movie. I mean, it might be! Which would be cool. But I was definitely expecting more of a Lego Movie thing.

Either way, this trailer looks fun.

I will note the line (which I may not be remembering word-for-word):

" Humans only end one way. Ideas live forever."

So I'd guess that mortality and immortality are indeed going to compose a theme in the movie.

Unless, of course, Trailers Always Lie... ;P

As to the trailer... I'm conflicted.

On the one hand, the overall premise seems really interesting, and I really like the characterisation shown thus far for Barbie and Ken, and the world-building for Barbie-Land.

On the other, I'm not sure that I'm inclined towards what seem to be elements of an evil businessman trying to capture and/or thwart and/or control Barbie, or some of the above-mentioned mortality and immortality philosophy.

On the other hand again, as I recall I was smiling through much of the trailer, which is promising...

(And of course, this is only a trailer, so it's hard to say how any of this will actually work out in the movie itself.)

So... *shrugs*

[up][up][up]I'm pretty sure this movie is gonna be rated PG-13, at least from what I could find.

So with Dua Lipa herself, i think that makes a grand total of eleven Barbies we know about.

Though I won't be surprised if Helen Mirren (the narrator) turns out to be another Barbie.

I refuse to believe that old people exist in the Barbie universe. Though she could be a Barbie that escaped and aged.

Cover interview with Margot Robbie for Vogue, a long, fun feature that discusses the history of the film's production, as well as various costume and acting choices among the cast.

Pretty much where I hoped Greta would take this, after two movies about teenage adolescence:

The arc is partially inspired by something Gerwig read when she was a kid, in the 1994 bestseller Reviving Ophelia. “My mom would check out books from the library about parenting, and then I would read them,” Gerwig says. The book describes an abrupt change that happens in American girls when they hit adolescence and begin to bend to external expectations. “They’re funny and brash and confident, and then they just—stop,” Gerwig says. This memory bubbled up early in the writing and Gerwig found it “jarring,” the realization that this is where the story had to go: “How is this journey the same thing that a teenage girl feels? All of a sudden, she thinks, Oh, I’m not good enough.”

Gosling deflects when I ask how he found his character—“It would be very un-Ken of me to talk about Ken”—but he does say that Robbie did things to help. “She left a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming. They were all beach-related. Like puka shells, or a sign that says ‘Pray for surf.’ Because Ken’s job is just beach. I’ve never quite figured out what that means. But I felt like she was trying to help Ken understand, through these gifts that she was giving.”

Ah, the antithesis to the Jared Leto school of method acting.

If Karl Urban was in this movie, he would have told Barbie to just take the other shoe and stop being a cunt.

Barbieland seems like the kind of setting that would excommunicate him for calling a woman a cunt.

[up]That map huh. For anyone who wants context, China and the nations of South East Asia have an ongoing territorial dispute over the South China Sea over which parts of the sea is under their control.

China insist almost all of the South China Sea belongs to them while the South East Asian Nations dispute this and insist they each have a fair share of the South China Sea which The Hague backed their claimed although China refuses to recognize it.

Since Vietnam and China don't get along sometimes due to the latter invading the former several times in the past especially during the Sino-Vietnamese War, the Vietnamese government doesn't like it if the media uses any map of the South China Sea that has the nine-dash line, the part that claims almost all of the Sea belongs to China, since it's just saying Vietnam has no claim to it's own Sea.

Can't say I blame them on this one. A government laying claim to parts of the world it can't even live on is a glaring abuse of authority.
