Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard (MB) cleanup thread! This thread is where we clean up or cut already-existing entries.

If you're looking to add new entries, please see the approval thread.

IMPORTANT: Before you begin any discussions on this thread, please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List

Here, you'll find explanations of the criteria for the trope as well as our rules/procedures for approving and cutting candidates.

What goes through this thread?

    Examples
  • Cut requests. If you believe a MB has been approved and they do not count, this thread is where you propose their removal. To know how to go about this, please see the FAQ folder on the Administrivia page, where the process is explained in detail.
  • If we ever need to consider cutting multiple examples without individually reviewing them (e.g. if we discover widespread plagiarism with a particular troper's MBs), the initial discussion will be on this thread and we'll then escalate to the mod team (as described here) to get a formal consensus if we decide to recommend a mass cut.
  • If an entry was put on the wrong subpage/YMMV page, you may propose where they should be moved to.
  • Full rewrites of existing entries, including expansions, trims, and ground-up rewrites. If your rewrite is approved by the thread, feel free to add it to the drafts page so that other users can check grammar and the like before it is included with the rest of the weekly swaps.
  • If an entry on a work's YMMV page doesn't match the entry on the media subpage, you can bring it here to discuss which entry works better.

What does not go through this thread?

    Examples
  • New candidate proposals - as stated before, those are done on this thread.
  • Unapproved wicks - if a Troper encounters either of these kinds of wicks, they can be cut with no approval.
    • Any MB link on a non-YMMV page - as a YMMV trope, it should not be linked on those pages regardless of any cleanup effort. The only exception is if the wick is being used within the definition of another trope.
    • If an MB link on a YMMV page refers to an unapproved character. If it refers to an approved character on any such page, the wick can stay. On the other hand, if the unapproved character being linked to sounds like they might have promise (and you don't feel like checking it out for yourself), feel free to mention it on the approval thread - someone may already know why they don't count, or it could invite a brand new discussion!
  • Proposals for images, quotes, and videos of already-approved MBs - quotes and images are proposed on the approval thread, while videos can be uploaded normally as they are screened for approval by the moderation.
  • Crosswicking examples to YMMV pages - if an example has already been approved and added to the main page, you do not require any special permission to add the example to a work's YMMV page (assuming the work has a page already). If a YMMV page doesn't exist yet, then you can make it yourself, but either way, feel free to just add the example without asking.
  • Small changes to existing entries - these can simply be done on a Troper's own prerogative with no approval.
    • Spelling and grammar fixes.
    • Pothole changes.
    • Minor rewordings.
    • Spoiler tags.

While these changes do not require any kind of approval, it is requested that should you make any of these changes, you do one of the following:

  1. Make the same changes on the relevant Sandbox page, then add the Sandbox to the list at the bottom of the drafts page. This will add the Sandbox to the weekly swaps and ensure that the edits end up on the relevant locked page. If the Sandbox is already listed, then once you make the edits, your job is already done!
  2. If you don't know how the Sandboxes work or simply don't have the time to find it, then you can simply post on the thread about the changes you made. Someone else can then make the edit on the relevant Sandbox and add it to the weekly swaps.
  3. Alternatively, you can simply request that the change be made directly to the locked page on the Locked Pages thread. Members of this thread keep track of that one, so we will ensure that the changes are made in the Sandbox so that it doesn't get deleted during the next swap.

Again, these changes don't require any approval, but we prefer to keep the entries on the YMMV pages and the locked pages the same in order to avoid any miscommunication or errors between entries, so if you do make the change, we would greatly appreciate it if you could ensure the change is made on the locked page as well.

As a final note, we do not care what other sites have to say regarding whether or not a character counts. We have our own criteria and they have theirs for their MB equivalents; while they are similar, they are not exactly the same and should not be treated as such. Another site removing a character from their equivalent should not be a reason why a cut is proposed here, and if this is the case, it will likely lead to mod intervention.

Other than this, once again, welcome to the cleanup thread, and we look forward to your contributions!

Hey, I’m back to propose a re-write for Lady Bow from Paper Mario 64.

  • Super Mario Bros.:
    • Paper Mario subseries:
      • Paper Mario 64: Bow is an aristocratic Boo. Inviting Mario to her mansion he arrives and climbs it while solving her puzzles along the way and once he reaches the top she reveals she was testing him to see if he lived up to his reputation. She also reveals she has kidnapped the Star Spirit Skolar then blackmails Mario into helping her defeat Tubba Blubba, a bully victim turned devourer of the Boos, something the duo successfully do. With that done she remains unapologetic, but promises to stop scaring Tubba Blubba, frees Skolar and then happily decides to join Mario full time having grown to love adventuring.

I feel like the grammar and sentence structure is a bit awkward, so I reworked it to this:

  • Super Mario Bros.:
    • Paper Mario subseries:
      • 64: Lady Bow is the aristocratic ruler of the Forever Forest who seeks to rescue her fellow Boos from their former bullying victim, the ghost-eating Tubba Blubba. To that end, she lures Mario to her mansion and tests his abilities with a variety of traps and puzzles. Upon his victory, Bow congratulates the plumber and reveals that she is holding a Star Spirit hostage, forcing Mario into an alliance to take down Tubba Blubba. Even after their success, Bow remains unapologetic for tormenting Tubba Blubba, yet promises to stop for the sake of her people, before releasing the Star Spirit and joining Mario's party to continue adventuring.

Is it okay if I rewrite/expand Goldie O'Gilt? Her entry only really mentions her first appearance and nothing of her other finest momennts. Such as helping Scrooge steal a big gold nugget from another rich duck, taking Louie under her wring and helping him scam Doofus before stealing the gold from Louie despite having a soft spot for him, and helping Scrooge find the fountain of youth and stop an ancient lion from stealing youth before saving Scrooge's life and giving up her chance at a second start. So, could I add these to her entry?

Yeah, I'd say she deserves an expansion with her deeds in later appearances.

How is this?

  • 2017 series: Goldie O'Gilt, Scrooge's old flame and "ex-everything," is a beautiful, conniving treasure hunter who rivals Scrooge himself in sheer wit and tenacity. Lacking Scrooge's scruples and possessed of a penchant for betrayal, Goldie has backstabbed Scrooge countless times to leave him in the wake of danger, while she constantly walks off untouched. During the Gold Rush, Goldie competed with Scrooge for the gold under Gumption before helping Scrooge steal a giant gold nugget from John D. Rockerduck, using her singing talents as a distraction. In her first onscreen appearance, Goldie plays both Scrooge and Flintheart in her pursuit of the Golden Lagoon, using Scrooge to locate the Lagoon for her before managing to fake her death with the Eye of Demogorgon and making off with the treasure herself, completely untouched in the end. Taking Louie Duck under her wing, Goldie helps him con Doofus Drake, cleverly getting rid of the competition at Doofus' birthday party, while growing genuinely fond of the young duck, before making off with their stolen gold for herself. Later joining forces with Scrooge to find the Fountain of Youth, Goldie helps stop Ponce de Leon from stealing others' youth before saving Scrooge's life and giving up her second chance at life. Even through their constant quarreling and rivalry, Goldie and Scrooge retain a fierce, mutual respect for each other, with Goldie always knowing Scrooge will make it out alive out of whatever conundrum she leaves him in and Scrooge acknowledging her as his greatest Worthy Opponent.

Is it too long?

I have noticed that months ago Dr. Lawrence Gordon from Saw was proposed and unanimously upvoted, but it seems his write-up never came?

I'll be at the very least adding him to the pending write-ups section.

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to ask, but when I tried bringing up this topic elsewhere, I didn't get an answer. So I figure I may as well ask here.

On the page SoYouWantTo.Write A Magnificent Bastard, there is a line reading "The MB also cannot be an Unwitting Pawn of someone else, nor they can be possessed or brainwashed. The person/entity manipulating or possessing them might be an MB, but they themselves cannot."

I doubt that this is an actual "rule" for the MB criteria (as I know that there are a few MBs who were possessed or mind-controlled in some way), so I considered removing and/or re-writing it. However I also don't know if this is actually some "official" part of the criteria that I was unaware of and that somehow wasn't written down on the actual Administrivia.Magnificent Bastard page for some reason.

So, is it an actual part of the MB criteria? Or is it just something an editor of that page made up?

Also, please don't turn the discussion into whether the SYWT page should exist at all. That's how my original question got unanswered.

Okay so, with possession / Mind Control, while you are correct that an MB can have that happen at some point in story as a brief thing. However it can't be their whole character. If the entire time they were acting on someone else's orders, then it wasn't their magnificence that was being displayed.

I agree the sentence could be phrased better on the page though.

Technically they can if they show enough individuality. If the brainwashed character is just following the orders of their brainwasher then they can’t count, but if they are just made to work for an evil character but can make their own decisions while they are serving said character, they can count. An example is xanafied Aélita Schaeffer.

Being an Unwitting Pawn is trickier but if they break out of it somehow they can count.

I'd say put them on Arrowverse since Superman and Lois is a Arrowverse show.

Not feeling the Bowser image.
