The caption is doing some of the heavy lifting, but the dirt, grime, and wounds combined with his stance sell the image of a physically and emotionally hurt character persevering.
Some suggestions. Here is Ash from Pokémon trying to tell Pikachu to leave and be with his own kind.
These are two random, context-less images of Ash and May crying from the Japanese 5th and 9th openings respectively. Sorry for the shoddy crop, couldn't find a shot that didn't have Japanese text on it.
And there's Naruto confronting his inner darkness late in Part 2.

the Pokemon examples aren't illustrative. It's not just about the hero being sad but being sad AND still doing their job.

How about the final scene of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm? It shows Bats on a rooftop, reflecting on the events of the film, then the Bat Signal appears, then he shoots his grappling hook and swings into the camera. It would require a stack of 3 images, most likely, though.
9 is the best one so far, but that one's not very strong either.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.

Not really in the manga without cutting and pasting, though you might be able to work a collage from the anime.

I'm not a fan of 9. Not knowing the context, it looks more like Dark Is Not Evil.
