I don't think we should use a pre-existing phrase if we're defining it in a completely different way.

I hooked a crowner for whether to rename because I forgot to do it yesterday. I'll review the name suggestions if we end up having enough consensus and compile a new crowner with them.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

Posting this comment to make public that I voted in favor of a rename. I'll bookmark the thread to cast a vote when choosing a name when the second crowner is ready.

Yes to renaming this trope.

I like Mystical India best as a new name, as it gets at the heart of the original trope idea while doing away with the mumbo-jumbo in the original title.

Regarding curry and elephants, Thailand is just as famous for its curry and elephants (though Thai culture is heavily influenced by Indic culture).

Therefore, I do not recommend curry or elephants.

[up]I'll grant you elephants, but when people think of curry, they think of India. Is there anyone outside of Thailand who doesn't assume curry is Indian unless otherwise stated?

According to The Other Wiki, curry is common in the entire south-east Asia, South Africa and England, though obviously it originated in India. A fact I keep forgetting because burry (or, Kare Rice) is also so traditional in Japan and you know how widespread Japanese media is.

I definitely don't think of "India" exclusively when I think of curry. Sorry.

Can confirm. I make a lot of Thai and Japanese curry. I am Filipino and my roommate is Vietnamese; we both have our own (derivative) takes on “curry” as well.

(On the topic of Thailand: Holiday in Cambodia also sucks as a name, but that’s for another day.)

I think of India when I hear about curry, even though Japanese curry is the only kind I've had.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Holiday in Cambodia is indeed an awful name if it's about the entirety of Southeast Asia and not just Cambodia. That explains why its wick count is in the double-digit range (albeit the high double-digit range), which may mean it's worth taking to TRS for underuse like how Olive Garden was renamed to Spaghetti and Gondolas for underuse (meanwhile, a TRS case from this year, Raised Catholic being renamed to Culturally Religious, was renamed because it was overused due to all the misuse).

For Holiday in Cambodia, perhaps name it Angkor Wat And Fried Tarantulas as the most famous landmark in Cambodia is Angkor Wat (it's even on the Cambodian flag) and fried tarantulas are primarily a Cambodian delicacy.

We can't worry about Holiday in Cambodia on this thread.

[up][up] The issue with Holiday in Cambodia is that apparently it covers more than just Cambodia. It applies to Southeast Asia as a whole.

Regarding the name for this trope, while curry isn't exclusive to India, curry is heavily associated with India and this trope is supposed to be about stereotypes people have about India.

Sure, but a trope name with "Curry" in it isn't going to necessarily tell people the trope is about India.

[up]Which is why putting it alongside other words was suggested, like Curry Elephants And The Taj Mahal, among other suggestions.

Of course, we always have suggestions like Hollywood India for a "less is more" approach.

I would support Mystical India, since Hollywood India feels almost like a snowclone (Hollywood Atheist, Hollywood Autism, etc.)

New crowner hooked. I didn't add every possible word combination with the "X, Y, and Z" naming scheme because the crowner is already pretty long.

I think the problem with names that contain "Indian Lands" is that it can be confused with Injun Country.
