Character-Specific Pages

My goal with these pages is to usually to create a less imposing amount of content to read every page. So characters with particularly big folders can be split apart to give breathing room for the rest of the page.

Street Fighter: M. Bison and Street Fighter Seth for example had over twice as much content as other folders for their games.

An example I would like to use

Does Star Wars - Grogu need to exist? It's only 3000 words and 18,000 bytes, and that is only because some of the entries are super long.

If the original page was long why not make it shorter another way.

Again though, I don't understand why size is even an issue in the first place when every character is already in it's own collapsible Folder.

You click the page, and it's just a list of folder names. It doesn't matter if Ryu's entry is 10x longer, because unless you open it, it takes the same amount of space as everyone else.

Again how long were the original pages? Was there another way to shorten them? Was this a last resort?

Like i said, smaller folders are a lot easier to manage due to less time spent scrolling or reading my text. It gives each page its respective space and ease of browsing.

And it's not like every visitor is gonna know what every folder contains like tropers do. The perspective of a first time visitor should be considered

But what are you scrolling past if all the Folders are closed until you manually open them?

What does clicking a link to a separate Ryu page solve that clicking the Folder for Ryu wasn't already doing, without adding unnecessary clutter to the index?

Like, the Folders HAVE the characters names on them. It's not a mystery folder.

We are here to figure out when one is needed. One of the suggestions is if the folder is 40,000 bytes or so and takes up the majority of the page. I am trying to figure out how big all the pages are and if there was another way to shorten it.

Like if say we moved it to be about groups rather then games? Would it have been better?

Why is size an issue when everything folds up into neat little boxes. Like, so far, I don't see any reason it EVER needs to be done, because Folders solve all the same problems.

I understand separate pages for separate game entries in a series purely for clerical purposes, but beyond that, I don't understand why the need for further subdivisions.

I think you guys are missing the point yeah from a visitor perspective it doesn't make a difference but editing is a different story, first of all sometimes it is literally completely necessary because the code can't handle it, and editing massive pages is really hard to do.

We could do how Mortal Kombat 1 does it and split it between two parts.

Yeah sometimes a page will get to long and the site can't handle it. So you will get this warning. At which point you either have to creat a new page or shorten it some how.

Oh, is there a literal byte limit the code can't handle? Well that's certainly a valid reason.

How are you guys able to tell how many bytes a page is?

I don't know. That is why we are trying to figure out a set of guide lines. Sometimes it is a little better to be ahead of the game so to speak.

Each letter is a byte including spaces I think. So like say at 500,000 characters/letters/bytes folders stop working and the page lags. Also there is a byte calculator.

There are several online programs that do this the one I like to use is http://bytesizematters.com/

Though it isn't just about technical limits when a page reaches to high a byte size it starts to lag many devices.

I have notepad++ downloaded. Also doubles as a semi writing program for articles

Wish there was an IOS version though...

If you ask me, unneeded splitting of characters is the same mentality that drives people to list a bunch of irrelevant stats or every voice actor ever in the description: people want this to be similar to Wikia and put everything about a character they love in its own special place.

However, the goal of TVT is not to be Wikia, but to concentrate correct tropes in the proper places. Punting it all to a different page does not immediately solve the readability issue. Personally, when I've crosswicked new tropes, I find it annoying to be bounced to an individual character sheet from a group, and in my experience cleaning Bojack Horseman character sheets, a lot of what was on the single-character pages tended to be bloat or misuse.

Now IMO:

1. Pages should only be split if the page is already very long and close to hitting the limit (I do not know what the limit is, but someone out there knows it)
2. Before splitting, clean pages first. Remove misuse, trim down walls of text.
3. The first choice for splitting should be by a group or Cast Herd, not individuals.

Agree that Grogu's page can be merged back.

Yeah. This should always be a last resort. So if a page gets to long try something else first. Try to to spilt it by groups/organizations. Or simply try to trim the tings first.

What does that mean for qualifiers then? (See the beginning of the forum for reference)

I always do make sure to do that, when I was merging the Injustice character pages I split up everything by organization but Superman and Batman's trope list were so long that I had to split those up.
