Kings of War - a WFB successor

Double-post: Dungeon Saga Origins got kickstarted in 40 minutes. Lots of lovely new minis, with the Twilight Kin and Abyssal Dwarves being my favourites.

Oh nice. Liking the more Lovecraftian feel of these dark elves. And Abyssal dwarfs are just awesome.

Had to show off my ogres to the guy who runs the local friendly game store. Needs to know I'm working on my armies, he wants an opponent.

Yeah, they are both really cool. I like the juxtaposition of lithe beautiful elves and squishy nightmarish horrors, because it helps these Dark Elves stand out from most other takes on the same. I've really grown to like the Abyssal Dwarfs, because even if they might have started out as clearcut expies of Chaos Dwarfs in WH, I prefer KOW's take on them.

Double-post: There have been some more reveals of new models◊ for Dungeon Saga Origins, some of which will be Kickstarter Exclusives. My personal favourite of these is the new type of Nightstalker Butcher◊, but the bomb-carrying Goblin and Abyssal Dwarf riflemen are also really cool.

Holy shit, I'm done basing my Empire of Dust. First time I've ever completed the war game boxset. I just need to paint them but otherwise I'm ready to play the game!

Nice! I'm slowly working my way through the Ratkin Ambush box. Converted one into Skaven Grey Seer.

Double-post: Apparently, the it isn't just the Twilight Kin that will receive new models, but their Nightstalker allies will get some updates and brand-new creatures to field.

Triple-post: A closer look at the updated range for the Nightstalkers, both new models and re-boxings of older ones. The tweaks done to the existing designs and that scary new Void Lurker make the Nightstalkers look even more like they might hail from the Upside Down.

Yeah I think I might have to get those.

Gotta grab some more custom bases though. I know the game itself is rank and flank, but if I'm gonna reuse the models for other stuff (And I will) I'd like the guys not to be stuck together. Luckily I have some slotted trays so I can do both.

I also prefer to have my minis on individual bases. I have loads of bases for WHFB and 40K, but if I were to run out, I can always use metal washers for it. With the Nightstalkers I am trying to think of the smartest way to use my money, so I'm leaning towards one of Mantic's bundles. I kinda collect conversion-projects, so I look at the Nightstalkers according to the many potential uses for the minis. I see the obvious use in Lovecraftian horror, but also as proxies for Tyranids, Chaos mutants, bits for undead monstrosities, among other things.

I've only found one successor for WAB, but are there any others?

Mantic has released and teased a lot of new stuff over the past six months, with the most recent piece of news focusing on the upcoming Twilight Kin for Ko W. In the first installment of a set of dev diaries about them, there are some interesting things brought up about the Twilight Kin. One is that the male Twilight Kin tend to be more easily corrupted by the Void than females, which makes the men closer to Nightstalkers in nature and appearance, with their armour appearing to be merged with their bodies. The designs made for Dungeon Saga Origins look excellent and now they are adapting them for regimental combat. What we've seen so far is an interesting mixture of more standard Dark Elves (both Drow and Druchii) and demonic Chaos Warriors, with a lot of Bio Punk elements to their gear that looks like Organic Technology. This helps sell the Lovecraftian connection, which resembles a lot the corruption seen in Void-worshiping factions in Wo W. Speaking of Warcraft, the Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism of the Twilight Kin does thematically remind me of the Naga, as the women look closer to the original Elves they were.

Triple-post: The Twilight Kin range is finally revealed in its entirety, and the figures look fabulous. These are some truly twisted elves, that fit in well with the Nightstalkers. Good to see that they are already incorporating some of the models made for Dungeon Saga Origins, such as the Butcher Fleshripper. There is even an Elves vs. Dwarves starter-box, where the Twilight Kin are paired up with Abyssal Dwarfs. Could be fun to get that box, then paint the Twilight Kin as Drow and the Abyssal Dwarfs as Duergar.

No sooner than I get my sister some nightstalkers do the amazing void kin release!

There are some new boxes for KOW Ambush up for pre-order, including a new two-player starter set. Glad to see more factions getting sets for Ambush, because these are an affordable way to get minis. Interesting to see that they are making boxes even for factions with older sculpts for most models.

Double-post: In recent months, most updates from Mantic have focused on their new Epic-scale version of the sci-fi game Warpath. But they are continuing to gradually shift their older metal models to resin, as well as updating older PVC to new hard plastic sculpts. After the Twilight Kin got a new range, the Northern Alliance received a few updates to their half-elves, along with kick-ass raven-riding dwarfs, which I would like to convert into dwarven gryphon-riders from Warcraft. Most recently, we got a bunch of new models for the Trident Realm, such as frogmen and giant toads and a Coral giant. Along with the Salamanders those plastic Riverguard could be converted into Warhammer-y Lizardmen, or for D&D.
