Odd Taxi anime movie announced. It'll just be a recap with extra scenes taking place after the finale of the series.

After the finale, eh? That’s actually content to watch out for.

There doesn’t seem to be any new footage from what I can tell, but I may watch it just to see how it pans out in movie form.

They still appear as animals, so I might assume the interviews took place before the ending?

That’s probably the case.

Curious though who the interviewer could be if they could get to everyone at various points of that time.

Finally got to watching this. First I was like "yeah, it’s pretty good", but the more I thought about things and connected the dots the more I was like "fuck, this is brilliant!" Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 12-episode anime manage this many storylines and characters without ever feeling confusing or rushed, and making every single one of those characters likeable in their own way.

I shit my pants at the final shot, but hopefully Odokawa will still recognize Miss n°4 even without his zoovision.

…Speaking of which, I’m really worrying about my attention span, since apparently the fact that only Odokawa sees people as animals was evident from the start to the commenters in this thread. It completely flew over my head until the last episode.

That Miss n°4 was the killer also flew over my head even though it was bloody obvious in retrospect. I don’t know if I really suck that much at mysteries or if I shouldn’t watch anime while cooking.

Either way, it was a great experience! One of the best openings I’ve heard in recent memory too.

Yep, it’s easily one of the crowning pieces of anime in terms of sheer writing quality. Such great use of Chekhov’s guns and foreshadowing, and I particularly love how the dialogue is always layered and yet believably conversational. That’s hard to balance and this show does it near perfectly.

The voice acting too. Hanae Natsuki was unrecognizable, and everyone nailed the "deep-but-casual" tone of the writing.

There’s even a character who raps 90% of his dialogue on the beat, for Christ’s sake.

Oh yeah, the rap dialogue was fantastic. And the subbers did a dang good job translating it, too.

Since it came out on Crunchyroll, I highly recommend everyone in this thread watch the movie. No spoilers, just watch it.

The movie was... a tad disappointing? I wish it had a few more new scenes (in particular, hope you weren't holding out for seeing exactly how Odokawa survived Sakura's attack at the end—considering that was what fans would be most interested in, it's baffling why the scene cuts off halfway like that). At least hearing the thoughts of other characters was interesting, and the ending credits had some heartwarming visuals.

I just finished the show with the English dub.

I suspected from the very beginning that the whole animal thing is just in Odokawa's mind - he's the only one referring to the other characters as animals, and everything, from the fact that Tokyo and Bruce Springsteen exist in this world, to the fact that non-anthropomorphic animals exist, imply that it's a normal human world. Also, since the intro shows Odokawa playing with a non-anthtropomorphic black cat, I thought watching the first episode that Odokawa was talking to a pet, and found it surprising that the other characters were baffled by that. Of course, the actual murder victim is also seen by Odokawa a black cat (and so is the murderer), giving this fact an extra layer. There's also a darkly humorous irony in the fact that Odokawa sees himself as an aquatic animal but has a fear of water.

I'm not entirely sure about the moral implications of Odokawa donating his lottery money to the Yakuza boss. Sure, he's a Neighborhood Friendly Gangster who has a Thou Shalt Not Kill policy and runs a NGO to donate to orphans, but he's still a criminal who probably also ruined many lives. But I understand that Odokawa feels grateful to him, and this way he feels he repaid his debt, and if the Yakuza boss keeps his word, he helped many other orphans like him.

Yeah, it’s hard to fault Odokawa for giving the money to the Yakuza boss given their history.

I really love all the hints that only Odokawa has animal-vision.

The only times other characters than Odokawa refer to each other or themselves as animals is when Rui calls Baba "horseface", which can easily be a slang for a long-faced person; and - at least in the English dub - Yano calls himself a porcupine in one of his raps. I don't know of the latter is present in the Japanese version too or if it's a goof-up by the dubbers. Also, I found it amusing that the English dub calls the marriage scam "badger game", but none of the involved parties are actually badgers.

I don't think Yano ever refers himself as a porcupine in the JP dub, no.

After I'm done watching my current works (Azumanga Daioh and Attack on Titan Final Season) by the end of Sunday, I will probably start watching this one next week.

My all time favorite anituber made a video dedicated to this one and he also ranked it among Top 3 best anime of 2021:

Honestly, one of the biggest appeals this anime has for me is that it actually finished and apparently ended in a pretty great note.

Sadly enough, though, I am spoiled of the fact that the reason everyone is portrayed as animals is due to the main character's mental condition or something.

Other than that, I'm mostly blind and looking forward to the mystery and twists. grin
