Soft Split Cleanup

Go To

So, it's been a trend for soft-split tropes to be split into multiple sections even when it's not needed and makes the page a hassle to navigate. In some cases, the trope in question is so large that hard-splitting some (or all) of the internal subtropes into their pages is more beneficial than letting them take over the page.

EDIT: Here’s the sandbox for this effort—Sandbox.Soft Split Cleanup

[up] I also did soft split it like that for Short Story but only because it was already grouping authors' works into together for probably indexing convenience? Idk

Blind Bag Collectables is a bit of a hot mess, as there are soft splits within soft splits.

  • There are "Branded Examples", "Fictional Examples" and "Real Life" categories demarcated by level two headers. These seem to be unnecessary, and I would just remove them and call it a day, except...
  • "Branded Examples" is also soft-split by "Stand-Alone Brands" and "Franchised and Licensed Products", and I can't discern a meaningful distinction between the two.

I'm thinking it makes the most sense to take out the headers and try reorganizing the "Branded Examples" folders into one folder for Toys. Anyone else have input on the situation or how to resolve it?

I don't actually have any Bumblebee icons, I just think the nickname is funny.

[up][up] So, for that situation, it seems to make more sense to me to have that sort of split, since some authors have lengthy catalogs of short stories that they're known for (Clive Barker springs to mind), but for tropes, it's such a wildly inconsistent soft split that you don't see for other categories that it seems to be superfluous, I guess?

Real Trailer, Fake Movie is soft-split between "Intentional Spoofs", "Unintended spoofs" and "Show Within a Show" examples. The "Unintended spoofs" section only has four examples and I'm not exactly sure what an "unintended spoofs" even is supposed to be. Two of the examples there are about real video game trailers that people mistook for movie trailers and I'm not sure those are valid examples of this trope. Would it be alright to just get rid of that section?

Revolving Door Casting is soft-split by whether it's based on a place of work or not, which feels quite hard to follow. Should it be merged and sorted by medium?

[up] I would say sorting by medium makes more sense, yeah. It seems rather arbitrary to split it by whether to work is workplace-based, honestly.

I have some concerns about the Draft Dodging page, which is divided into six folders based on five assorted methods used for draft dodging and a "miscellaneous/mixed" folder. Should I rearrange it into "by media" folders, with the methods described in each entry, rather than leave it as is?

Until next time...

The description lists fourteen ways to dodge the draft, so there's no reason for the examples to be split six ways. (And splitting it fourteen ways sounds incredibly painful.) Merge it.

Atomic Shrimp is split into "scambaiting videos" and "everything else". I guess he's most known for the scambaiting, but he intends his channel to be a variety channel and the scambaiting is just one thing he does; should this be merged?

Draft Dodging duly cleaned up and sorted into standard media folders. Also moved two examples to "real life" and commented out two that need more detail.

Primal Fear has 17 folders, including the generalist one. Is there any reason it can't be condensed into a normal list?

I think Deliberately Monochrome should be split. Currently has 4 folder sections:

  • Black and white: The actual trope.
  • Limited palette color: Covers all other limited color schemes (which is beyond the scope of this trope). Also has a bunch of Splash of Color examples (which already exists and should have it's examples moved there)
  • Desaturation (colors get semi-grayed or sepia rather than full grayscale)
  • Multiple (which seems to mostly be a redundant category that fit better into one of the above)

I'd started moving some of the Splash of Color examples but thought better of it and wanted to verify here first. I think those examples should be removed from this page at minimum. But I also think the remaining "Limited color palette" examples should be split into a separated sister trope, since it's Square Peg, Round Trope on this page turned into an entire folder category.

Spoofy-Doo has a separate folder for "Warner Media" examples. Though technically not a soft split, I don't think this is warranted.

I think that's because the parent company of Scooby-Doo recycled the core formula in several ways that fit the trope, and because it warrants a lot of Company Cross References and crossovers by other works within the parent company. But I think the Hanna-Barbera entry and its sub-bullets covers that enough (in theory — many examples lack context).

About a week ago, there was a soft-split on Summary.Western Animation where each work was sorted by genre/medium In order with the remaining examples being sorted under the Western Animation header. Much like the Video Game page before it, the split made navigating the page significantly more difficult when adding a work, since that would mean you have to scroll down at the bottom to place a work that didn't fit the above categories. I especially don't get the Expanded Universe heading; most of the examples listed under there are either Animated Adaptations or Spin-Offs, some of which aren't even connected to their source material, nevermind those that are all but stated to take place in an Alternate Continuity. Should we revert the soft-split or keep the page the way it is?
