The end has come and gone. It has been centuries, since the Golden Age of the Old Realms ended at the hand of the Zet. Mankind has been pushed back into a single city, hidden behind a massive wall, cut off from the rest of the world. Now, the war is over. The enemy has retreated into the wilderness and humanity slowly makes its first tentative steps into a changed and dangerous world.

But just as extinction no longer looms over them, man slowly begins to indulge in old mistakes. Tensions and rivalries, long repressed, are coming back to the forefront. Instrigue and Incompetence plague the Administratum. Lack of Purpose and Belonging strike the remaining Androids. Hybrids, bred for war, now struggle in an era of peace. The Wardens, warriors wielding powerful Exo-Suits have risen high in recent years, inviting suspicion and envy. And all the while, new dangers emerge around them, ready to finish off the wounded beast that is the city of Rungholt.

The end has come and gone. But the fight for survival has just begun...

This is the Signup Thread for Rungholt, my new Sci-Fi/Post-Apocalypse RP. Rungholt focuses mainly on an ongoing storyline, character-development, sprinkled with some action. There is extensive background-information, that I put in this thread, so please check it out before you write your character. Additional information can be gained from the Lore Thread, but they are not strictly necessary for character-creation.

The setting is very much "Used Future", with lots of rust, recycling, lost technology, ruins, etc. Intrigue and Cyberpunk will also be prevalent, along with a bit of horror, for good measure. The main inspirations are Anthem(Bioware) and Cyberpunk 2077, along with a few others.

This is a Rp made for three to four players. Experienced writers are preferred, since this is a very detailed setting. Quality will be higher than usual, including from myself. You will be playing as new recruits for the Wardens and will begin your journey, by receiving your first Exo-Suits and undergoing the Rite of Passage. There will also be Character-Arcs, for the characters involved, so each player will have at least one chapter that will involve their backstory/past or other stuff, that revolves around them, over the course of the storyline.

Finally, don't forget to have fun and I hope this RP will entertain everyone who reads it.

_____________________________________________________________

Name: Your characters name.

Keep in mind, that various races have different name conventions. For example, Hybrids usually use slavic/nordic names.

Humans use ethnic names from Old Realms like german, spanish, Italian, etc., with the exception of English.

Gents as descendants of aristocrats and the elite use noble names, with dynasty titles, like for example Serena of House Arcadia.

Androids have single names with a letter at the end, like Xaver-Y or Lucia-U.

Mutants use single names, which are usually close to emotions or terms. For example, Victor or Blanche.

Age: Your characters age. As you are getting recruited into the Wardens, your character is likely going to be at least 18 years old. Exceptions are androids, for obvious reasons.

Appearance: Looks and physical traits.

Hybrids follow the standard Little Bit Beastly variant. That means animal ears, tails, finger-claws, etc.

Mutants have more freedom, but are more like insectoid, with humans features. Skin-colors range from green to black.

Android slide between Ridiculously Human Robots and Deceptively Human Robots. Generally, synthetic features are visible, with wear and tear depending on the age of the android.

Tinkerers tend to have lots of cybernetics installed, like prosthetic arms, legs, etc.

Personality: What is your character like? Quirks, likes and dislikes.

History: The backstory. Try to answer some of the following questions.

Where were they born? How did their early life go?

What are their reason for joining the wardens?

Were they recruited forcefully? Did they join voluntarily?

How did the two-year training-camp go for them?

Skills: Please put here your character's skillset. Anything from sneaking, to former professions, to combat-styles outside the exo-suit. Anything that could be considered a skill out of the ordinary. Or maybe a mundane activity, they are exceptionally good at, like cooking.

Exo-Suit: This is the place, where you can put the description of your exo-suit, its configurations, weaponry, etc. Keep it very basic, with only one weapon and maybe one modification (ex.: Grenade-Launcher, Thrusters, Extra-Plating, etc.)

You have access to three categories: Light, Medium and Heavy. You have mostly freedom, but keep in mind that it should be kept somewhat grounded in reality and common sense. Exo-Suit are generally not bigger than 8-10 feet.

Lastly, do put a name on your suit, that fits its loadout and history. Since all Exo-Suits are derived from templates and you are very likely going to get older/used/stripped models, your suits have a history behind them, that should get mentioned. Example are something like "Robin Mk. II" for a Light-Suit with bow and camouflage. Or "Martel Mk. IV" for a Heavy-Suit with Hammer and Folded Plate-Shield.

Misc.: Here put in anything that doesn't fit in other categories, but you wanna mention anyway.

  • Name: Astrid Andersdottir
  • Age: 30
  • Appearance: Giant and jacked, about 6'4" and 200 pounds. Astrid is enormously built, and her Cat Hybridity fills her out with even more fluff around her head and neck. She wears a lot of plain, functional jumpsuits, choosing utility and comfort over flash.
  • Personality: Astrid's highly driven and ambitious, and holds the cynical belief that most people are similarly always out for themselves and trying to get something from her. She can certainly trust people in her line of work, because anyone killing Zeds is operating out of mutual self-interest, but she's a lot more suss of civvies and anyone else not actually putting their life on the line. She is fully aware of the mindgames people play, and subtlety and all that, and is also completely disinterested in it.
  • History: Astrid's family are a family of politicians, not real nobles but community organizers, administrators, and high-level merchants. She hated it. She didn't understand half of what her family was talking about, and hated that she'd need years of schooling to even understand it. She just wanted to live her goddamn life, but realized that her life here would be nothing but gaming systems and speaking doubletalk. She signed up for a tour protecting Rungholt and made a name for herself as a competent soldier, but she was unwilling to advance to a higher tier of service. Unwilling to advance to a command position she transferred to the Wardens, and was again able to focus on what she wanted directly ahead of herself—an exo-suit and more Zeds to kill.
  • Skills: Astrid's a soldier by trade. She knows how to fight barehanded and with most common weapons the military fields, but most importantly she doesn't get tired or bored easily. She has a good sense of spacial reasoning, and fast reflexes. She's got a stomach of iron and she's inured to a lot of common disgusting experiences.
  • Exo-Suit: Judah Reborn is a suit on the small end of Medium, designed for close-quarters combat and protection. It uses a short, heavy combat shotgun and a tall shield. The shield has an array of phosphorous panels around the edge that can release a blinding flash with a button on the back of the shield. The armor itself has a wide, rounded profile, not unlike a modern-day space suit with the big boots and gloves and dome helmet and polarized visor, painted with a mottled gray urban camo.

The Light That Blinds
#4: Jun 12th 2020 at 5:12:54 PM

Name: Tera-E

Age: 6, though he looks 18.

Appearance: Tera is tall and lithe, with black hair pulled into a low ponytail and dark skin made of interlocking plates (it's almost impossible to tell his race). He usually just wears whatever's available at the time, so his choice of clothing can get...weird.

Personality: Tera has been active for exactly three years. Two of those years were spent in the training camp. As such, he doesn't really get the ways of Rungholt, or humanity in general. He is naive, literal-minded, and about as subtle as a neon sign. He's not stupid—he's actually rather well-learned—but he's a fish out of water in social situations.

History: Six years ago, Project TERA was launched. The goal: Replicate the androids of years ago, in the hopes of rediscovering lost technology. In that, they almost succeeded. The android the group of roboticists built was meant to be an emergency response droid, who could protect civilians in the event of an attack. In that, they sort of succeeded.

Three years after the project was launched, something went wrong. No one knows exactly what, but one day, all communications suddenly cut out. After multiple attempts to reach the scientists to no avail, a group of investigators were sent to check in on them. What they found were bodies. Many, many bodies. They returned to give the news, and the project was deemed a failure.

A week after the disaster, Tera woke up, knowing absolutely nothing and thoroughly confused. He wandered around the facility for a while, eventually naming himself after the project, before emerging into Rungholt proper. He then wandered through the city for a year before joining the Wardens on a whim, and wandered his way through training camp. He's rather sick of wandering by now, and has decided that as of joining the Wardens, he's going to get an actual purpose. What that purpose is, he doesn't know yet.

Skills: Tera was programmed for emergency response. As such, he has instinctive knowledge of first aid, providing cover, organization, and on-the-fly strategy. His reflexes are sharp, he can run incredibly fast, and he's stronger than his build would suggest.

Exo-Suit: Mercury Mk. III is a Light suit built for speed. Made of a metal that weighs very little, the design of the suit is considerably more slender than most other Exo-Suits, and is made of far less parts. (It's also blue, which is cool.) Built into the boots is a pair of rocket thrusters that, when activated, let the wearer hover and boosts their jumps. Pressing a button on the wrists of the suit causes a metal blade to erupt from whichever arm the button was on.

Alright, concept looks good. Just a few thing that I would adress:

Tera's appearance has no hint of his robotic nature. In fact, the way you describe him is pretty much completely human. A few traits that show his artificial nature would be nice. Maybe the hair is made out of cables or his skin is made out of interlocking plates. Stuff like that.

Backstory is a great idea, nothing to really criticise. Maybe a location would be nice, like where the project was done. Was it commissioned by the Administratum? Were the facilities somewhere in the Wall or in Centre, etc.? You don't have to answer those question, if you prefer those details to remain a mystery.

For the Exo-suit, I would say that complete flight should not be a thing....for now. But hovering or boosted jumps are okay. A Plasma-Blade is a bit too advanced for a stripped-out/baseline exo-suit, so replacing that with a metalblade would be more fitting.

Those are all my gripes. Otherwise this looks very interesting. smile

#6: Jun 13th 2020 at 3:19:01 AM

Name: Jagoda Sobczak

Age: 19

Appearance: Short and slim (4'9", 102 lb), Jagoda moves silently and with inhuman grace. This is partially due to both of her legs having been replaced from the knees down with prosthetics specifically designed to make no noise no matter how fast she's moving. They also have compartments in the calves that hold various tools, parts, and half-broken doodads that she's tinkering with.

Her upper body is mostly her own, save for her left ring finger, which she lost to a machine she was working on when she was six. She has a number of different prosthetic fingers of varying design, and wears different ones from day to day.

Her right eye is normal; her left has been replaced with a telescopic lens. Sprouting forward from among her mental cables are two long, needle-thin antennae that constantly twitch and wave.

She has an intense tan and short, dirty-blonde hair in a pixie cut. She's put a golden sheen on her mental cables because it looks good with her hair.

Personality: Quiet, shy, and sweet, Jagoda will help anyone with anything, if it's within her ability to do so. She has a real difficulty with saying no to anyone asking her for help. She's friendly to everyone, but, at least at present, close to no one. She rarely speaks up during briefings, but when she does, her ideas are usually good. When on duty, she becomes utterly silent, never speaking unless she's reporting in to her superiors. Jagoda hates killing, and always tries to take out foes non-lethally if possible.

History: Born in the Aegis to a house tinkerer, Jagoda grew up working with a Bear Clan family who were all advance scouts. Their family home was near the Horngard; Jagoda spent many idle hours in her childhood watching strangers flow in and out of the mega-city. She yearned for the day she would be able to cross the Wall herself. She saw how many went out and never returned… and that only strengthened her desire to see what was out there.

Her Bear Clan host family had a son, Jorn, who was a couple of years older than Jagoda, and the two of them were very close growing up. When Jorn was eight and Jagoda six (shortly after the incident that took her finger), his family began training him to take up their mantle. He spent much of his spare time practicing what he was learning, and Jagoda helped and watched, learning right along with him. She began to customize her body for stealth and recon, culminating in her replacing both her legs when she was 16.

By this time, she had surpassed Jorn, but was not allowed to accompany him on scouting missions, nor was she permitted to join the advance scouts herself. Frustrated and chafing at the restrictions, she pestered Jorn until he finally gave in and agreed to sneak her along.

He managed to smuggle her out through the Horngard to join him on what should have been a routine check of a ruined factory. They discovered a nearly-dead Zet within the ruins of the building, and Jorn prepared to finish it off.

Jagoda stopped him. She knew this was their greatest enemy, but seeing the reduced state it was in, she pitied it, and could not bring herself to end even this life. Surely, she reasoned, it was no danger to them now. They could leave it to live out what little was left of its life. She convinced Jorn to lower his weapon.

As he did, the Zet inhaled sharply - then expelled a cloud of spores, catching Jorn full in the face. He shot it dead at once, but it was too late. On the following morning, Jorn's face was covered with oozing sores. By midday, he could no longer walk, because his legs had swollen to the size of barrels.

He and Jagoda both knew what was happening, and that there was no hope of any recovery. She sat with him through that afternoon, evening, and night, watching his body twist and distort, listening to him rave as his mind began to do the same.

As the first rays of the dawn appeared on the horizon, Jorn seemed to come back to lucidity. He begged Jagoda to just end his suffering. She refused. He asked again, unable to even finish the sentence before his eyes rolled back and he began to rave again. This time, she obliged him.

She carried his body back to the Horngard so it could be properly buried. There was an inquisition, of course, and Jagoda did nothing to hide what she had done. The inquisition determined that, ultimately, Jorn should have known better than to bring a civilian - and a Tinkerer at that! - along on a mission, and the failure was placed on his shoulders, posthumously disgracing him.

Jagoda was banished from the Aegis, and Jorn's father swore that he would never forgive her for the part she played in his son's death and disgrace. He expelled her mother from his household; she told Jagoda that she never wanted to see her again.

Having no idea where else to go, Jagoda sought out and joined the Wardens. Jorn's death haunted her for a long time; she threw herself into her training with frightening intensity, eschewing friends and socializing. She had vowed to become strong enough that she would never again have to take the life of a friend or an enemy.

In the last three months of camp, Jagoda finally began to emerge from the shell she had built around herself. She's still reluctant to become close to people, but she's ceased actively shunning them. Time will tell if she continues to grow warmer, or shrinks back into herself again.

Skills:

  • Her telescopic eye allows her to see with clarity out to 750 yards, and also functions as a microscope for fine-detail machine work.
  • Her prosthetic fingers each contain a full set of lockpicks, as well as a small switchblade.
  • Her prosthetic legs allow her to move silently at all times.
  • As a Tinkerer, she's naturally, if erratically, good with machines. Her particular focus is equipment for reconnaissance and stealth.
  • She is trained in Aikido and is capable of using it to defeat opponents much larger and stronger than herself.

Exo-Suit: Snake, Mk. III

"Snake" was the codename of a legendary human stealth operative who specialized in reconnaissance and hostage rescue. He became famous, or infamous, for never killing any of his enemies - his preferred weapon was a dart launcher that utilized an incredibly powerful tranquilizer, leaving those he fought alive to face proper justice. For a long time, his superiors denied that he existed, but after he stopped a terrorist plot that would have led to the death of every child in Washington - while at the same time bringing every perpetrator in alive - his existence was declassified and he was given the accolades he deserved. "Snake", whose real name was Billy Holden, retired to an island in the Caribbean and founded a charity to promote peace between nations. Now, centuries later, Billy Holden has been forgotten, but "Snake" is still remembered and revered as the greatest stealth operative of all time. This Light, skin-tight, barely-armored exo-suit is designed to allow the wearer to replicate some of his feats. It's colored with the mottled gray and black of night camouflage, and has the following abilities:

  • Stealth Module: This active-camo module allows Jagoda to become partially invisible. A pronounced shimmer in the air, similar to heat haze, denotes her presence while it's active. It's not in very good condition, so the effect can only be sustained for 45 seconds before the device overheats. It then needs 15 minutes to cool down before it can be used again.
  • Dart Gun: A pressurized dart launcher built into the wrist of the suit, capable of shooting darts tipped with any of a number of poisons:
    • Dizzy - causes intense vertigo and light-headedness for 15 seconds.
    • Rage - causes violent anger towards the nearest visible person for 8 seconds.
    • Pepper - causes intense pain in the area struck for 30 seconds. Does not do any real harm.

Very good character. I would recommend getting rid of the antennae, since that would be a bit too OP, what with all the other abilities. Similary, I would appreciate if the telescope-eye would be more for microcospic usage, like zooming in while working and stuff, rather than the extreme zoom and infrared-vision. Simply to balance your skillset out.

Other than that, the stealth-module should not grant total invisibility at such an early stage, but a camo is still possible, so just downgrade the invisibility a bit and its good to go.

Adress those points and I see no issue accepting this character.

Edited my signup. Also, the vagueness of the project was indeed on purpose. Tera doesn't remember anything about it, since he wasn't active. I figure that the finer details about the project, and what happened to those working on it, could be learned as we go. Does that sound good?

edited my post!

i kept the antennae but made them aesthetic-only for the moment; i can tinker with them as the game goes on, i assume?

i vastly cut the range of the eye and removed the infrared mode, and gave the stealth module a flaw that makes her still visible.

if any of these changes didn't go far enough, let me know!

(i also cut out my commentary, since you saw it and the sheet is easier to read without it)

Name: Damon Vanleer

Age: 38

Appearance: A 40ish looking Caucasian man. His blue eyes are slightly clouded he wears an almost always worn expression, he is typically wearing a lab coat over some comfortable clothes. A leather satchel hangs at his side. A green plated cybernetic left arm is the only visible cybernetic he has. His black hair is cut into a coffee house cut and a braided beard.

Personality: likes the more home made aspects of exosuits, and is a bit of a combat fanatic taking great pleasure in battle. Out of combat is in a perpetual state of despair understable given the current state of things. Is known for salvaging on job and looting sites for personal gain.

History: born in the salvage yards of Rungholt’s outer sectors. Damon was forced into becomeing a scavenger early in life due to a accident killing his parents, leaving him on his own. He through sheer luck and certainly not skill managed to survive being a scavenger though his luck never gave him good loot, only allowing him to scrape by. A large cache of a new exosuit blueprints allowed him to escape being a scavenger and at some point joined the wardens as a new and hopefully stable position. With his former experience as a scavenger netting him scouting jobs and Field work. He has been a warden for 5 years now, and was just sent out to retrieve exosuits from the fallen recruits of the crucible.

Skills:

light salvaging skills

Left arm has been replaced by a green plated cybernetic not recognized by anyone. Claims a gift from a fellow scavenger of a small pre collapse cybernetics company. The markings read Hephaestus Industries.

Has a brawling like fighting style both in suit and out of suit

Exo-Suit: Hephaestus mk|||

A rather new heavy exosuit. The hydraulic suit and Skeleton are taken from old mining designs while the armor and weapon mounts utilize heavy combat armor. Resulting in an extremely slow but durable and strong exo suit that remains rather affordable. The exosuit appears to be a hulking human figure formed of metal plates layered on top of each other. The hydraulic system has been modified to be even heavier resulting in extreme strength with a punch alone while giving up even more speed. The weapon systems have been replaced with a fuel system allowing the fists to be ignited. a grenade launcher has been mounted on the shoulder for ranged abilities, though with very limited ammo due to the lacking of weapon systems. Only 3 HE grenades are usable per fight until needing to be refilled from the outside.

Misc.:already inducted and was tasked with recovering exosuits from fallen recruits. during the crucible.

Okay, this needs a little bit of clean-up, since this is pretty hard to read. Its pretty sparse on details and I would like if you give me nonetheless a summary of his personality, since I have little to go on here. What is he like? Dislikes? Likes? Quirks, etc? General behaviour? His physical description is also very lacking. What is his hair-colour? His body-type? How tall/heavy is he? Any notable features?

48 years is also too old for our current group, since the players are all new recruits to the Wardens. You can play an already inducted Warden, that is possible, if you really wanna play an older character. Maximum age would be 40 in that case, though.

Keep in mind, that your character would in all cases be part of militaristic organization, so bad vision or primary use as mechanic would be very detrimental/contradictory to that.

Also, I seem to get the feeling that your character is not native to Rungholt/to the current time. I would give a veto on that one, since that goes a bit too far away from the more gritty, down-to-earth tone of the setting. Time-Travel or similar stuff is generally not gonna be a thing.

Sorry, if that sounds a bit harsh, but those are the issues we would have to adress first. smile

Looks better. The grammar is still a bit rough, so it would be nice if you could clean that up. Also, your history is now empty. Please write a backstory for your character.

Where was he born? What is his family? His previous occupation? Any notable events? How did he get to the Wardens? How did his career go so far? Those and other questions can help. You can also refer to the other sheets in this thread, if you need help with structure or wanna see how the other players did their backstory.

Lastly, only small detail, change german to caucasian. German is not an ethinicity, but a nationality which obviously doesn't exist in Rungholt. Is your characters surname Vanleer or van Leer (latter would be a dutch surname, for example)?

Again, more details are better than fewer, since it fleshes out your character. smile

Alright, looks good so far. You can increase his years of service to five, so it fits better with his age.

  • Appearance: She's thinking about the mission. Or maybe just about what to make for supper.

  • Personality: Veronika's a bit of a strange one. On the one hand, she can seem quiet and calculating, but one can often find her mumbling or talking about the most inane, random things even in the most dire of circumstances. Off the job, however, she tends to be more emotional and easy-going, more hyper and energetic. She's deeply devoted to her older sister, who inspired her to train and join the Wardens. Perhaps most curiously of all, is the quiet will with which Veronika carries out anything she sets her mind to, believing that if life wanted her to fail, it would make it impossible for her to succeed. This way of life that she follows almost like a religion, is a belief in an "unavoidable fate" that will eventually come to her and that that's when she will accept failure. Until that day comes, she will carry on by any means necessary, fighting and trying with tooth and claw.

  • History: Coming from the Fox-clan, Veronika was exposed to the front lines of the defense against the Zet, her family being old military. Her older sister, Luka, was a member of the Wardens, and someone Veronika grew up being extremely proud of being able to call her family. From her teen years, Veronika was set up to continue the family tradition, where she showed some promise with the more subtle arts of fighting after some time with one of the family's old hunting rifles. With the help of Luka, Veronika nurtured these talents and, in secret, the skills she would need to work out in the wilderness taught to her from Luka's experience. Several years later, when Veronika was 18, Luka never returned from beyond the Wall, leaving a devastated Veronika behind. Her idol, her role model, the one who taught her the most of what she knew, was gone. Although she was prepared for this inevitability to happen at some point, Veronika was inconsolable, sinking into a deep fugue for over a year.

    • In the depths of her grief, however, something...changed in the coming-of-age hybrid. A soft, steel-clad determination, bound in a faith of knowing that she would one day meet her sister again in the afterlife, whatever it might be. Until the day came that her fate would be sealed, Veronika saw the only fitting action to be to follow in her sister's footsteps and train to become a Warden, and she would push herself to whatever breaking point she had to get there and make Luka's memory proud. After 2 years of training, she was finally ready to take on the Crucible in her first live-fire exercise, having been strained mentally and physically, but passing with flying colours in all aspects of her training.

  • Skills:

    • Sharpshooter: Even outside the suit, Veronika is a deft hand at marksmanship, years of practice making a rifle in her hands feel like an extension of herself.

    • Mind Partition: One of the weirder skills Veronika has. She's rather adept at running two trains of thought at one time through her head without losing focus on either, most commonly something focused around the task at hand and the other thought on something mundane and boring to keep her hands steady and mind clear. This instinctual quirk she's trained means she's supremely cool under pressure.

    • Wilderness Skills: Veronika specialized in recon during her training, with the help of her sister. With them being near one of the walls, Veronika had more than enough second-hand experience from her sister to learn how to track targets in the wilderness, provided they leave some evidence of their passing behind, and identify and gather useful resources like food and water. She's also adept at listening for sounds and such that would alert her to anything nearby.

    • Cooking: One of the few skills not directly related to her training. Veronika is a decent home and field cook, able to whip up simple, but wholesome meals that actually leave you with a content feeling after eating them.

    • Stealth: Obviously, as a recon specialist, Veronika has a professional amount of skill in not being detected, particularly in the wilderness.

  • Exo-Suit: The Advanced Recon/Target Elimination Mobile Infantry Scout, or ARTEMIS for short. It's equipped with a suppressed light scout sniper rifle, more for taking pot shots at vulnerable points on unaware targets. The Artemis was designed to be a forward recon and target elimination exo-suit, which would require potentially getting a vantage point most suits couldn't achieve stealthily or with any finesse. As such, the Artemis has an all-terrain mobility configuration, with retractable claws on the hands and feet for climbing and stability on narrow or uneven surfaces, and two grappling hooks mounted on its shoulders for swinging or grappling to vantage points.
