Seems the franchise is going for a younger demographic this time.

That's not the new part, nor the part that worries me

the part that worries me is the dueling and duel disk designs looking like ass

I don't think it's actually a meaningful change in primary demographic, they're just using a more standard art style this time (which may well alienate older fans, admittedly)

Looks like a quasi-reboot of sorts: New style, back-to-basics approach to the story, and a card game format that consists entirely of new cards

From what's been revealed so far about the story and characters, I feel like the series has potential. On top of that, given that it's confirmed that "legendary" cards like Blue-Eyes will show up, the crossover idea may not be off the table yet.

It's mostly the new art style that I feel is the most divisive factor. Also, Yuga looking a bit too generic. Luke and Romin both look fine design-wise.

As for Rush duels, given how predominant special summoning is even in the anime, I don't think not having a 1/turn normal summon limit is going to change much in that regard. In fact, it may even help cut down on effect explanation. The whole "replenish your hand at the beginning of the turn" may also make Hikokubo's job easier and avoid having to make overly situational cards. It's mostly in regard to how it'll work IRL that I'm having doubts.

Also, much like how VRAINS had a mix of both Speed and Master duels, this may also be case here with Rush Duel. The trailer did show the duel disk changing to go into "rush duel" mode.

One thing I'm not sure about is the choice of director and series composer. While they both have prior experience with card battle anime (the director directed Vanguard G:Z and the series composer wrote scripts for two of the Battle Spirits anime), I'm still on the fence. Hopefully, they've kept some of the writers familiar with the franchise on the team.

Nah to this. I tapped out at VRAINS due to other issues, but this just doesn't appeal to me at all. Just as well, like with Pokemon I couldn't keep watching forever just because I grew up on a show.

It's more the fact they seem to have simplified everything even further.

  • Overall simpler rules
    • No limits per turn on anything
    • No life points
    • Draw cards till your hand is full
  • Elementary school protagonist rather than Middle or High School
  • Generic To Be a Master goal
It reads more like they're marketing the series towards the same demographic Yo-kai Watch and Beyblade aim for, I.E. little kids. Cause despite the claims of this series being about Children's Card Games, its still marketed to at least 13 year olds in Japan. This however actually does seem to be marketed towards kids.

I guess my main issue is that, compared to the prior series, it just seems so basic. There's no real hook to anything, when all the other series had something to possibly grab you: But this season doesn't really have that kind of hook. Rush Duels in themselves aren't enough of a hook when they're a more simplistic version of Duelist Kingdom rules, despite Speed Duels already being made for ease of getting into the game, and the series has been compared design and layout wise to Future Card Buddyfight, but that series has more of a hook since they have the monsters alive, apart of society, and the game letting the players fight alongside their monsters.

Could be that we learn more as time goes on, but none of what we know what now endears this to me in anyway. Heck, Rush Dueling as format actually makes me kind of scared.

Though it could work depending on what new cards are used. My first reaction to it was with the older cards in mind. Heck, this could a roundabout way of rebooting the game.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Unless I grew it. In that case, throw it in the trash.

[up][up]Where'd you get the no life point thing from ? That doesn't appear to have been mentioned anywhere and the "no limit" thing seems to be applying only to normal summons unless I missed something.

As for what a possible hook could be for this series, it may have to do with BEWD's appearance, given that it looks to be unexpected both out and in-verse judging by the characters' reactions in the trailer. the Ygorg article linked in my previous post contains a line that indicates other "legendary cards" will be appearing as well.

Apparently the story of Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens is that Yuga invented his own rules to the game (Rush Duels) because the actual card game was too hard for him to understand.

[up][up][up]It's not that they're "too hard for him to understand" and more that he find them too rigid and not fun enough.

Which fits in with the setting of the show where the city is under the control of the Goha Corporation to the point they share their name with the city and the school the main cast attends.

To put it simply, the plot looks like it's going to be "Kids forging their own path in a world controlled by adults".

That's an oddly interesting plot idea.

Japan as it is right now is basically controlled by a gerontocracy that wants things, SMT LAW style, to stay the exact same forever. No changes, no alterations to societal norms or culture. Everything stays the same - forever.

And the idea of kids going against this to forge their own future reflects on this. It's mostly the young that go up against the party that seems to be in power forever.

Of course you have to wonder how sincere that message will be; at the end of the day this series IS being used by a big corporation to sell cards, after all.

However, the creator of said cards had some strong words for the Party that most represents said gerontocracy...

"The current administration is betraying its own country, and I really wonder if Japan's future will be OK!,"

I dunno, I want to feel optimistic about this.

lol this is so dumb, especially when the main new thing is just unlimited Normal Summons. (And drawing until your hand size is five I guess but that's only going to matter on Turn 2.) He must really be into Monarchs or mill decks or something.

The current game can be pretty unfun with how floodgate and spam-based it is. Normal monsters are pretty meh in comparison power-wise. Rush Duels sound actually rather interesting.

I like the new idea, especially with why it's being done. The game was beyond homogenized in-universe and controlled by companies that it didn't allow for new ideas or deck styles. Doing something a bit different is not a bad thing. Very interesting way to change it up without simply giving yet another Extra Deck monster. Normals weren't notable except outside of some old video games and super early on in the physical card game(moreso in OCG, but TCG did start off that way. We got effect monsters very early on, like Magician of Faith and Wall of Illusion, two who were pretty good for their time. MOF had a slight niche for a while during the Link era, enough that they reprinted it. Niche died soon enough since she was too slow and would be popped first. Only Shaddolls could remotely work as a decent flip deck, and Links also screwed them over. Now the deck is far better with the latest rule update anyway. I mean, it's been doing well enough in the OCG, especially with the new Structure. Who knows how it'll fair in the TCG, or has it done well already with almost every card back it used, bar Norden).
