I was looking for a page image for Sandal Punk and realized I was actually thinking along the lines of what Sword and Sandal covers. Is there a difference between the two tropes? What would be an example of one and not the other?

There was a TRS for all the Punk Punk tropes recently. It stalled out, but there's a lot of discussion of all those tropes on that thread, including Sandal Punk. Many people felt that some of the tropes covered there were misnamed or not unique tropes, but there was no consensus. My takeaway from reading the thread is that tropes with a "Punk" name should

  • Have a clear lineage from either Steampunk or Cyberpunk
  • Emphasize the role of technology in the story

From the description for Sandal Punk is, it's not clear that either of those apply. It doesn't mention Sword and Sandal, and it's unclear what the difference is. There's a lot of overlap between the examples as well. So I would say that as written, they are duplicates.

That said, I could imagine a Sandal Punk genre that fits the above criteria existing. But there's no evidence that it does from the page. Googling around, the term seems to have been coined by Tabletop Game/GURPS so it does exist outside of the wiki.
