A thread discussing similar tropes. If thread participants agree that two (or more) tropes really don't seem distinct enough to be separate, one can start a thread in the Trope Repair Shop for further discussion.
Before asking "What's the difference between these tropes?", check the Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions and Laconical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions lists. They may contain the answer. Feel free to contribute to them, too.
I've decided to start a new cleanup thread dealing with trope similarities. This thread is for discussing tropes that appear to be a duplicate of another trope, and if it's agreed upon that the two tropes talked about are similar enough, one should start a thread about it in the Trope Repair Shop.
I'll start with my issue...
Asian Hooker Stereotype and Mighty Whitey and Mellow Yellow are pretty much the same trope—they both involve a white man and an Asian woman.

I agree with the Child Eater vs. Eats Babies distinction. if Child Eater specified it didn't allow babies, then i'd see the point of Eats Babies, but it doesn't. from a brief survey, many of the Eats Babies wicks don't follow its "makes this character extra evil" requirement, and it seems largely pointless and overly specific.
Is this an example of the Villainous Valour or The Suicidal Imbecility?
Example: When he faced to Bob's friends (there are eight of them), Slaugh sarcastically raised an eyebrow and told them, "Oh, there will be eight more corpses." And he arranged to fight...

That's probably a better fit for the "Is this an example?" thread. But I think it's the former trope.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300What's the difference between Motion Capture and Serkis Folk?
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.Going by the laconics? One refers to the production technique, the other to the characters who were created via the production technique.
There's a lot of overlap though, so whether they should stay separate is another story.
Until next time...

Silver and gold, silver and goldThe description of Joke Exhaustion states:
I’m not really sure if this is enough of a distinction, however. Even if it is, the page isn’t doing well, with only 32 wicks over 13 years.
back lolThe former is self-evidently not Creator-Driven.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupAre Colonel Badass, Majorly Awesome, and Four-Star Badass basically the same trope? "High-ranking commissioned officer who's unusually badass".
I mean, one's specifically a holistic general, one's an ignored rank and the other is a flag officer respectively. I think they're distinct enough, but they could probably use a wick check.
Are Humans Are Not the Dominant Species and Animal Is the New Man distinct enough? They both just seem to be "humans eventually answer to non-humans", even though the latter claims to be a subtrope of the former. Silver and gold, silver and gold
The dormer is not limited to animals being the somjnant species. It can be aliens oe robots, for example.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.I keep forgetting which thread was meant to differentiate two tropes. I need to know if Too Dumb to Live is or isnt the same as Lethally Stupid.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.In a nutshell:
Too Dumb to Live: gets themselves killed
Lethally Stupid: Gets others killed.
Of course, it’s not hard for someone to be both.
SoundCloudWhat's the chief difference between Troubled Production and Development Hell again? Can they overlap and be listed on the same Trivia page?
You see, I'm in the process of updating stuff in Trivia.Granblue Fantasy Relink (the game just released yesterday), and unfortunately, most of them were untouched for months or years. Generally speaking, one could say that the game went through a "troubled development" if you'd dig its development history... It's a mix of the game taking many years before its initial announcement (2016) and final release (2024), plus changes that happened behind-the-scenes (for instance, it was supposed to be a PlatinumGames title)... that I'm no longer sure if only one between Troubled Production or Development Hell be used, or if it's okay to just use them both.
With Great Power, Comes Great MotivationBy my understanding:
- Troubled Production is for a work that has issues during the actual production process, but eventually does get finished.
- Development Hell is where a work is stuck in the development stage and never actually gets into production.
Until next time...

If you're responding directly to one of my posts, please ping me to make sure I see it.I think the way you're phrasing it is misleading and makes it sound like they're mutually exclusive. My understanding is, Development Hell is when a work is sitting around going unmade for whatever reason, usually no one actually stepping up and getting it made, but a work can be Saved from Development Hell; a Troubled Production is when the process of actually making the work runs into obstacles.
Based on Development Hell's image and quote, though, it seems as though Development Hell can be caused by Troubled Production, or at least that Schedule Slip can apply to something in Development Hell even though having a schedule in the first place implies that someone at least thinks it's being actively worked on.
Conversely, Troubled Production doesn't mean that the work languishes in development. If for example a film's shoot is plagued by Hostility on the Set, an onset accident, a directorial change midproduction, and the star getting COVID but still comes out a few months behind its first announced release date, that would not be Development Hell.
How are The Red Stapler and Defictionalization any different?
The Red Stapler is when fiction causes demand for a real-life product. It sometimes involves Defictionalization, but a majority of the examples don't.
back lolIs Shouting Shooter different enough from Screaming Warrior?
Silver and gold, silver and goldHow is Must Make Amends different from The Atoner?
I am not entirely clear on what the difference is between Hollywood Law and Artistic License – Law, as they appear to cover the exact same territory.
Hell, at the end of the Hollywood Law entry it even says "For Hollywood Law tropes on this wiki, see Artistic License – Law."
It still looks like a duplicate to me. The distinction doesn't look that meaningful.
