So! I took Nouct's advice and started watching Fate/Stay Night on Netflix and I've currently finished the fourth episode.

Some notes:

  • Was rather surprised the first two episodes were roughly an hour long each, but I guess it saves on episode count.
  • The homeroom teacher has her own home, but she mooches off Shirou's place. And acts immature, but can catch you by surprise when you try to give her a sneak attack. Strange, but fine.
  • I remember reading how Sakura (purple-haired girl) had something of a nasty grandpa, and it looks like her brother's no better.
  • Was also surprised to see Saber's a smidge shorter than Shirou. She's still kickass, especially with Kari Wahlgren's voice.
  • Fight scenes are fast and super flashy. Nice.
  • Lancer has no problem killing a guy like Shirou and that unsettles me.
  • So you don't have to kill a mage, but it's the fastest way to achieve victory. Okay, I was wondering about that.
  • That Illya girl is UNHINGED. And Berserker seems less like a Servant and more of a Brobdingnagian monstrosity of muscles and evil. Am I wrong? I wouldn't be surprised if he used to be Attila the Hun in the past...
    • Side note: If we can keep the Pokemon analogy thing going, is "leveling up" a thing for Servants? Because Berserker looks and fights like a Level 100 when when Shirou, having barely started being a Mage, probably has a level 5 thing with Saber. (I think.)
    • And she's letting them live? That sounds like code for "I'll be back to drag you guys into hell."

Overall, it appears to be what they call a slow burn of action and drama, but as long as I've got a funny show to work with as a palette cleanser, this could be something worth watching while on an elliptical.

Imagine that but it's also in cyberspace.

That's for Extra Last Encore, specifically, right? Because that's like...whoa. surprised

I remember reading how Sakura (purple-haired girl) had something of a nasty grandpa

Don't expect to see anything major about that in that anime though.

[up] Yes? I sort of figured UBW is like the Original Trilogy of Star Wars whereas Zero is basically the Prequel Trilogy where you're like "Oh, so that's why X is like Y!"

...It isn't that?

It's basically that. UBW is The Empire Strikes Back.

[down]I meant it as the second in the trilogy.

The original visual novel has three routes, i.e. three diverging storylines: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel.

The first route was adapted by Studio DEEN in 2006, UBW by Ufotable in 2014 and Heaven's Feel is currently being adapted into three movies, also by Ufotable. Fate/Zero is indeed a prequel.

Well, they're parallel storylines so technically you can start with UBW and not be lost. I haven't watched the DEEN anime myself (though I've read the VN).

The homeroom teacher has her own home, but she mooches off Shirou's place.

She's Shirou's legal guardian, so she frequently comes over to keep an eye on him and his house (which is actually owned by her family).

And also because he cooks great food and she wants to eat it.

[up] Ohhhhhhhh. I thought it sounded like she was mooching off of him. My bad.

Anyway...Fate/Grand Order is getting an anime series regarding its Babylonia arc from CloverWorks and a movie about its Camelot arc from Production I.G.!

I've only just started watching UBW, so I'm in the dark about anything regarding Fate/Grand Order other than the fact it's a mobile game.

world ended, seven points in time with grails that need to be retrieved to un-end the world

There's an OVA called Fate/Grand Order: First Order on Crunchyroll which adapts the game's prologue if you want to get an idea of what the story's like, though I'd advise finishing Unlimited Blade Works before you watch that since it blatantly spoils certain characters.

Episode 11 was released today. I liked both the talking and the action Gawain seems like a cool guy and Leo seems a bit creepy.

Hylarn (Don’t ask)
#187: Aug 1st 2018 at 1:26:54 AM

Okay, series is over. The stuff with Leo was fun for being the series' art design and animation at it's strongest. Twice, on the other hand, was all of the writing problems coming home to roost— I barely understood what was going on, and cared even less. Also the ending thinks it's happy and I don't why

Overall, this is in certain ways some of the best anime I've ever encountered, but in others... rather low on the list. Brilliant art design! Phenomenal animation! Top-tier direction! Also a confused plot, lifeless character writing, and horrible word-vomit for dialogue

There's some interesting ideas in the plot but A) the dialogue turns already complex concepts nigh-incomprehensible and B) I'm pretty certain Nasu was at least partially making it up as he went along. Most obvious on the 7th layer, where Chakravartin suddenly becomes a ticking clock and Leo had to have made some nameless mistake in the past to explain how Hakuno won

All that said, the 3rd layer is gold and I will fight anyone that suggests otherwise

It's been a while, but the final three episodes have aired, and now it's time for the wrap-up.

So essentially this whole series was a continuation of a Bad End of the video game, where Hakuno fails to defeat Twice, and Twice decides "Fuck it, let's end the world". So he enters the Moon Cell to tell it to obliterate this timeline and all other branches of it, removing humanity not only from one timeline, but essentially all the Fate/Extra branches. His resentment and rage generate a Dead Face of himself, and that Dead Face remains behind, configuring Chakravartin to do the final honors and commence the Pruning. But transmigrating something as powerful as the Moon Cell is tough even for the Buddha's Noble Phantasm, so it takes it 1,000 years to build up the power to do so.

And the Buddha himself just... left apparently. It still strikes me as odd that he'd be complicit in the annihilation of humanity. In the original game, it's said he helped Twice fight other Masters out of a sense of pity towards Twice, but... that reason doesn't seem significant enough for leaving Chakravartin behind as an instrument of genocide. And Twice's victory in the original game did not mean the end of mankind, it just meant someone else would have to try again in the next Holy Grail War.

The fight with Leo and Gawain was pretty cool, though I find it curious that Galantine is portrayed as more powerful than Excalibur ever has been. Also, every other entry in the Fate franchise has made a humongous deal out of Gawain being effectively invincible when the Sun is out... but here he's just a powerful Servant? Or are we supposed to believe that Hakuno's Dead Face powers boosted Nero up so she could match him even in sunlight? Also: Deus Ex Bookmark. Really convenient Hakuno had that on him.

Leo Harwey has always been an interesting character, and I thought he was kind of wasted in Extra and Extra CCC. While he never struck me as the type of person who would give in to Twice's pessimism, he got to act the hero here at the end and do something useful, which I liked to see. Also, I love his older character design.

And it ends with Hakuno being deleted and Rin winding up the "winner" of the Holy Grail War, which is effectively what the ending of Extra's Rin route was. The difference here being that Rin doesn't have a physical body anymore, so she remains in the Moon Cell and oversees the creation of a new world, like what happens in Fate/Extella. The Earth is finished, but the few remaining humans can digitize their souls and live on within the Moon Cell.

On the whole, it's a decent enough story, and I get the feeling that, somehow, this is closer to Nasu's original vision of Fate/Extra than the game turned out to be. However, he was a damned liar when he said this could serve as an entry point to the Extra mini-verse within Fate. You basically need to be very familiar with Fate/Extra and parts of Fate/Extella to make sense of what's happening here.

Buddha seeks to save Twice. Hakuno was to be his salvation. The fact he gave up Hakuno failed, and became Dead Face as a result meant he abandoned salvation itself. But the Buddha is a compassionate being, so even upon Dead Face Twice he left one of his minor Noble Phantasms out of kindness.

It should also be noted that the way the Timeline TREES work means this is specifically Extra's Tree He seeks to end.

Actually Leo would be the easiest to sway to Twices thinking in this scenario precisely because The Harways fundamentally desire stagnation as their form of order. While they certainly think it was all them that made the world more "order'y" via stagnation it was mankind itself that desired it in Extraverse.

TBH we probably should've seen this adaptation being a bad entry into Extra the moment it called itself "Last Encore", can't wait for the next Fate anime to be equally bad as a starting point!!

i feel so bad for the dub which actually knows that twice h. pieceman is a dumb name but has to present in a completely and utterly serious manner.

Unless Fragments or Strange Fake suddenly get made into anime and come out next year, the only ones left in the slate is the FGO anime.

AKA we took the two most popular bits of the game for the anime because of their reception AKA we're making the literal last portions of the game before the Final Boss with absolutely no buildup whatsoever for viewers who haven't played the game into an anime

Hylarn (Don’t ask)

I know I've heard people say that there's evidence that a Fragments anime is in the works, but even if that's true Babylonia is still probably the next Fate/ anime out (discounting Heaven's Feel continuing). So, yeah, "the next Fate anime is going to be a bad starting point" is a fair assumption

Regarding Buddha's actions:

But the Buddha is a compassionate being, so even upon Dead Face Twice he left one of his minor Noble Phantasms out of kindness.

That's the part I don't get. I can understand him wanting to be kind to such a wretched soul as Twice, but surely Buddha had to know what Twice was going to do with Chakravartin. It seems to me the harm this would cause far outweighs any kindness toward Twice, and that doesn't seem in character.

The Buddha can only save those who wish for salvation. The stagnation of humanity that predates even the events of Extra means mankind as a whole doesn't want to be saved. This is especially clear in CCC where BB holds a Humanity on Trial voting poll on whether mankind deserves to exist with every living thing that has existed on earth. It's why Twice breaks Leo by making him realize even if he tried to make a better world the stsgnsted humans would reject it.

Guess what most of humanity voted for? Hint:Plants were the only majority of any living creature to vote for mankinds survival.

Probably worth pointing out that the Moon Cell did the polling subconsciously; it's not like all of humanity was directly asked whether they deserved to die.

Still, I guess the point is taken about humanity's self-destructive tendencies. Though I would argue that that still seems out-of-character for the Buddha to condemn an entire species to death, even if it was out of compassion for another.

So I finally gone and watched the final three episode.

Man, the amount of pseudo-philosophical bullshit being peddled was hilariously high even by Nasu standards. But, in a way I would've been disappointing if it wasn't.

Ugh, Leo. Never liked the guy. Walking empty hype incarnate.

Man, the fights were top notch, I'll give them that. Especially Nero vs Gawain. Holy shit, that was a spectacle.

The last episode was rather shaky - like, Hakuno decides to stay with Saber and sends Rin to get the wish... only to then change his mind.

And so ends the Last Encore. An very enjoyable piece of weirdness with Nasu's stamp of quality on it. I agree tho that calling it a good entry point into the world is a joke. I could sometimes barely keep up with what's going on, I can't imagine how confused someone coming in fresh would be.

The clue really was in the name this time. "Last Encore" - and through the whole run there really was this permeating atmosphere of ending - this was the last hooray before the curtain closes, a last chance to look back, and clean up the loose ends before moving on.

Well, but it ended on a optimistic note, which is nice.

Okay, I finished episode 13 of Unlimited Blade Works.

  • That had to be one of the biggest gut punches I've ever experienced. Like, damn you Caster... surprisedsad
  • And also Assassin's rib cage getting exposed. Ewwwww. He's got a healing factor, right? Somebody please tell me he has a healing factor.

And now, I finished season 2's first episode.

  • Okay, that had to be the second biggest gut punch I've ever seen. Like, total dick move, Archer. Pretty sure even Sterling Archer would be appalled.
  • Furthermore, it makes Rin's last words to Shiro in season 1's last episode super ironic. Like, so ironic, there really should have been an ironic echo.
  • That said, Shiro and Rin being together in the last minute or so was adorbs.
