I have no idea who the person on the left is. Even after reading the caption on the image, I'm confused.

The image is making a pun on the name of the concept...and not a good one. As alternate options, this or this came to mind.

I don't think the images adds anything to the suggestions in 2. They're just text.

Still on the obscure side but I think better than the current is a cover for 1984

This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.

[up][up] True, but as this is a language trope, text is going to be impossible to avoid, and I couldn’t find anything at that point that worked better as an image.

[up] Those slogans feel like something different than what this trope is going for.

None of the suggestions work as illustrative images imo. The 1984 one doesn't quite fit the trope, since that's about changing language in order to change thought (and that's assuming you know anything about the book).

Suggestions:

[up] None of those really work as illustrative images either...the first doesn't seem like it fits the trope, the second is just a stereotype about how women and men think, and the third is just a bit of wordplay as an advertising slogan. There's no way to illustrate this without using text of some sort, whether it's a simple statement or a character discussing the concept.

The third is an example of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, though. It's an ad for bottled water (Fiji brand) and the ad is as "clean" as can be. The slogan itself is just a slogan but the image it accompanies changes the meaning of the words. Rather than talking about Fiji the country, it's talking about — y'know — the brand of bottled water. Like you say, there's no way to illustrate it without using some text, and that ad does use a simple statement.

I dunno, it just reads like a bit of clever wordplay to me and not a true example of the trope.

Re-clocked to give some more discussion time.

Calling this. The new pic's up and tagged; caption?

Edward Sapir, left, would consider English and Klingon not "sufficiently similar to be considered as representing the same social reality." Worf, Son of Mogh (right), on the other hand, has little time for linguistic niceties.

[up] Dunno, but it seems possible, which is one reason I was against that suggestion.

It appears there is not a word for pollution in itaukei.

I think y'all are thinking the ad is about the country... or reading into the ad a bit too much...

[up] My intent was to make the caption the word in the Fiji language for pollution. Basically ruining the joke.

Sounds a bit mean-spirited bit I like the potential for sass, truth be told. What about:

Well I'll be damned, there isn't a word for "pollution" in Fiji...
With a pothole to the thing you linked above (I'm on mobile atm so posting links is hard).
