I don't think a suggestion relying entirely on the text is any better than the current relying on the caption.

I just had a look at the many threads about this trope. All of them before my time. For some reason the Bessie pic from OP was already on a crowner
5 years ago but didn't make it. The winner was shot down by Fast Eddie afterwards. From what I understood is that people wanted to see affection for and the name of the gun in one image which none provided. Current has neither btw.

Because I don't know the work, that second speech bubble seems to be coming from the gun (with a bit of Third-Person Person thrown in). It's a decent suggestion, imo.

I guess he became so affectionate to the gun he's having trouble separating himself from it.
