Oh, no, they likely haven't - I live in Japan.

That said, yeah, I know what happens to him. It's not enough. It's not nearly enough.

It's been fun.

Please tell if you're talking about the manga or the anime in your spoilers.

Anyway, episode 13…

……

…fucking… dust in my eye… Still, Nanachi is «"lucky"» (for an extremely loose definition of the term) that she transformed into a cute fluffy rabbit instead of… whatever the other Shadows became.

[up][up]Oopsies.

I know it’s extremely hopeful to ask for an animated continuation, but... an animated continuation, please?

13. Lesson learned. Never trust masked men with grand ambitions involving children. Nasty guy as could be guessed. Reg and Nanachi did the right thing giving her a mercy kill. A fairly uplifting ending considering what came before.

Pretty good overall. There were some points where the pace could have been improved a bit, but it's nothing deal breaking. The way kids were treated could get very uncomfortable, for good and bad. I don't think the violence became gratuitous, but it came close to the line at points. Great setting overall that carried the show. The characters, while dumb at times, were generally fun to watch. I'd probably watch a second season to see the secrets of the abyss.

Fucking Kevin Penkin.

I had to stop eating lunch while the elevator scene and the funeral was going on, although the tears finally came when Nanachi first tried actual food.

Air mail was a nice touch. The author might have forgotten to add that scene in the original run, and decided that putting it in the anime will do.

Bonbon should have opened his mask a bit, like in the manga.

According to 4chan, we might see a continuation in the future. The one who backed this project was the head of Cygames, who used his fortune to fund stuff he likes regardless of sales, just because he has that much money to burn. He likes Made in Abyss. Bahamut got a 2nd season. And the OST has many, many unused tracks that would be perfect for certain future events.

I got some Dr. Mengale vibe from mask guy and was completely right, fuck this person in every coneivable way. Also there's fridge horror on the amount of light bulbs still working.

Overall this show was great with an interesting world and good cast, I kinda want to call this a deconstruction of the "DRPG" genre (Etrian Odyssey for example) with the idea that that the "dungeon" is a death world, there's untold number of people who die in search of the abyss, with those that survive becoming warped either physically or mentally, the culture around the abyss is fatalistic with most of the children of the orphanage probably acknowledging a good chunk of their friends won't survive. But it could also be just a dark story in a world that is cruel and unforgiving.

I guess I'll wait for another season, or at least hope for another.

The worst part about Bondrewd is (Manga Spoiler) by the end, you can't even label him a sociopath.

Dat last shot, though:

Can't wait for Best Dad to be animated in his fully, wonderous, horrifying, worst person ever in all of anime/manga since Griffith glory someday.

This is the anime's last scene as portrayed in the manga, by the way. You only get to see an eye, but it is quite an eye.

I promised that if that was given the respect it deserves, then almost nothing that has happened or will happen will put this below 9.9/10 for me. And my promise will be kept. Byebye and thank you for everything, Mitty.

That... this was pretty much a microcosm of what Made In Abyss is. First the whole season, then this episode, and then that balloon sequence. Each successive thing was a roller-coaster of feelings. This is the definition of Emotional Torque.

Welp, I'm still kind of shook. Gonna... Do other things for now.

Wow, that was amazing. I haven't been emotionally affected by a show this way in a long time. There better be a second season. And a third. And however many it takes to finish.

The manga just got to an 8.93 on MAL, the anime is now 8.54 as well. How wonderful!

EDIT: Decided to binge read the manga. Yeah it's amazing. One of the things about Bondrewd is that he isn't evil, just very unfettered. He's a very complex character and I feel like calling him the nastiest villain since Femto is undermining him. I agree that I have no sympathy for him at all however, he broke the MEH so far down and what he does to Mitty and Prushka is downright disgusting. The thing about Bondrewd is that I don't know if his love for Prushka is typical manipulation, or genuine but Bondrewd is very insane.

You absolutely can call Bondrewd a sociopath, by the way. (manga) The elevator scene is the least morally repugnant thing he does.

That said, he's also an incredibly powerful presence in the manga, completely unrelated to his strength. He's like Ozen - a natural phenomenon in human shape, basically. Not a being for humans to comprehend or interact with except with the greatest of caution, moreso for Bondrewd than Ozen.

(Manga) Remember that he retained enough thought about conventional morality to trick the children, lie to them about what they were getting into, and then turned them into boxes of meat with just enough remaining to technically count as human for a curse that hates humanity. He knew what he was doing, and neither his habit of remembering their names nor his results justify any of it.

^That's actually easy to answer. He loved them all but not enough not to torture them into insanity for his own selfish theories.

I can only imagine how much fun the other two (or three) will be.

To be fair, Ozen mentioned that Bonbon’s the nastiest of the entire lot, so Sorting Algorithm of Evil probably (hopefully) won’t come into play. Still, (Manga) the Narehate Village is already wild enough in sheer WTF territory that one can only imagine how the two White Whistles can keep it up.

The entire first part of the episode was beyond horrifying, and tragic. Bondrewd is a monster and the way he sounds so.. pleasant just underlines it.

Mitty's death was one of the most emotional scenes I've ever seen Just amazing.

Glad that Nanachi is sticking with them, she quickly became my favorite character.

Good end to the season.

Yeah, Bondrewd is an exercise in Evil Is Sexy given his whole aesthetic. All he needs is a cane and he'd be the picture of a nobleman. Except, you know, incredibly evil.

It's been fun.

We'll, I really have to call that, "oh he's not really evil" claim... complete horse poop. Ok look, just because a character isn't overtly presented as evil or is given far more depth than just, "does bad things because," doesn't mean that the narrative hasn't condemned his actions, or that he's earned any sympathy, or that the audience isn't allowed to judge him rightly as evil.

Just because someone does things that they think are right doesn't we have to call them good.

And also, I disagree with the elevator thing being less morally reprehensible than what he does after that. It's all about the same level of irredeemable fuckery. It's just somewhat different kinds of fuckery.

It wouldn't be right if we didn't find out that in spite of the horrors of the Abyss the true monsters wear human skin. That's the FMA moment. The wrongness and the inhumanity.

Made in Abyss is definitely one of the most solid anime series I've seen in a while.

The end is of course a deliberate sequel hook, so fingers crossed we don't wait too long.

Just finished marathoning this show after hearing all the good things about it. Last episode was a fucking Tear Jerker like I would not believe. Also the OST for this show is stupidly good. Really hope it does well, it outshone all of my expectations going in. As far as my favorites go it's probably Ozen and Nanachi.

One thing I particularly appreciate about this series (not sure how the manga does it) is that it manages to balance the depressing and the uplifting so well, so that both have just the right amount of impact and make the opposite resonate even more strongly. Also, it manages to be extremely gruesome yet not being overly Gorny, and avoiding dissonance despite the incredibly cute and loveable characters. That's a very difficult tightrope to navigate.

Yeah. In fact, you could argue that he's more evil for it. (manga) What gets me is the time he ejects one of his cartridges, and as the girl inside is dying he talks fondly about how she wanted to be a princess someday. Remembering their names doesn't make him not evil. It makes him worse.

^Ozen and Nanachi are easily the best characters, yes, though the Riko-Reg-Nanachi team really shines when it's all three of them.

The horrible thing is, I don't think Bondrewd is just pretending to be nice to fool the kids, that's how he really is. And the fact he can do all that horrible stuff seemingly without malice means he's pretty much not mentally human anymore.
