> Hey, why not a sandwich!
>Maybe some soup, too...

There are several sandwich and soup items on the menu for you to choose from, but you very quickly settle on two specific ones: the soup of the day (salmon bisque) and a grilled chicken sandwich. Upon making your decision, you place the menu down and wait for the others to make their decisions.

Walter: "I must say, this selection impresses me. I've not seen such variety."

Flynn: "You've been to a location like this prior?"

Walter: "Indeed, though there weren't many options that didn't in some way involve fish. I hail from a family of fishermen, we were among their primary suppliers. In fact, I struggle to think of the last dish I've had that wasn't seafood."

Jonathan: "I can imagine such a limited diet would grate on one after a while."

Walter: "It could have been worse. All I know is that I'm glad to finally have the chance to broaden my horizons."

Flynn: "Indeed. Have we all decided on our meals? We've still some time to be waited on if any of us are feeling yet indecisive."

Navarre: "I knew what I'd get from the moment I saw it. T'was a pleasant surprise, I'd not think this location would have the available resources."

Jonathan: "They take orders for appetizers before entrees, yes? I've yet to decide on a main course."

Walter: "I'm fine with anything so long as it isn't fish."

Navarre: "Yes yes, you've established your distaste for fish, no need to repeat yourself."

Flynn: "Navarre, I should hope I need not repeat myself."

Navarre: "Fine, fine. Not promising anything, however."

As Flynn said, you have some time before your orders are to be taken. What better a use of this time than getting to know your fellow prentices? Do any topics of discussion cross your mind?

> Are any of you experienced with combat? Considering our job, I'd imagine training and sparring is important...

Navarre: "Well of course I've never fought before! What do you take me for, a ruffian?"

Jonathan: "I've not raised a hand to harm another in my life, either. I suppose I'll need to acquaint myself to a life of conflict now."

Walter: "I've been in a few scraps myself, but nothing more."

Flynn: "I've had some formal training, so I at least know my way about a sword."

Walter: "Oh, so you're experienced? Well, I suppose I'll need to put in double the effort to match you!"

Flynn: "I suppose I wouldn't mind some competition to keep me on my toes. I look forward to seeing what you're capable of, Walter."

Walter: "I could say the same to you!"

>So what was home like for you guys?

Jonathan: "There's a good idea, why not be open with our backgrounds? T'would certainly help us get better acquainted. Shall I start?"

Flynn: "If you would like to. I suppose it ultimately does not matter, as we'll each have a turn to speak."

Jonathan: "Very well. I've three sisters, all younger than I, my father is oft occupied with his duties for the monastery and so I see him very little, and my mother is a seamstress in her off time. There's little more to say than that."

Walter: "Ah, so your father's a monk? Is that right? I had thought the monks of the Messian Order undertook a vow of chastity."

Jonathan: "Not quite so; there are certain circumstances in which procreation is permitted, though they are quite scarce. Of course, my father joined the monastery's ranks shortly after the birth of my youngest sister, so that is a moot point."

Flynn: "Quite curious how your father, too, is of the faith, Jonathan. My family's belonged to the Messian Order for generations. In fact, before today, it was planned for me to join the ranks as well. Though, seeing as the Samurai protect this holy nation, one could say I'm simply serving God in a new way."

Navarre: "I hate to say this to you, Flynn, but the way you put that is a bit... pretentious."

Flynn: "Very well, Navarre, let's hear what your former life was like."

Navarre: "My parents are King Ahazuya's chamberlains and I've got a darling younger brother who knows just as well as I do how great I am. Now then, let's see how you Casualries top that."

Flynn: "Tactless as ever..."

Navarre: "I'm reserving my tact for more deserving recipients, I'll have you know."

Walter: "I pray that our paths will need not cross too often in our line of work. Now then, you know all there is to know about me. I'm but a humble fisherman's son, and I'd prefer this occupation to taking up my father's mantle any day."

Jonathan: "Very well. I suppose that leaves only you, Yuuna. What of your old life?"

Other than Issachar and that one time you two nearly drowned in Lake Mikado, you've little more to speak of than Walter. Would you care to embellish your upbringing, or tell it as it stands?

>Tell it as it stands, but use some embellishment and dramatics to set up the mundanity of your former life as a punchline of sorts. Good way to stand out: be the funny man. Woman. Whatever.
> Yes, let's tell as it stands. There's no use in lying about our life.

No point in outright lying, is there? Yet at the same time, you don't want your life to be outright boring. And so, wishing to entertain, you build up the truth of your life to be something impressive, cryptically teasing your fellows and garnering as much intrigue you can. Then, when they're sufficiently invested, with their gazes trained diligently on you in anticipation...

You very plainly and flatly state that your life hasn't amounted to anything. This garners a collective sigh of dissatisfaction from the whole table, yet everyone seems to have enjoyed your story.

Walter: "Well, I suppose that's one way to put it. Damn do I wish I thought of doing that!"

Jonathan: "You truly had me going there. Should I expect more of this from you to come?"

Navarre: "You know, for a Casualry, you at least do know how to put on a show. I should hope you'll continue to pleasantly surprise me in this manner, but I know better than to get my hopes up."

Flynn: "You told that rather well. One can only imagine how you'd speak of our escapades soon to come."

The general merriment is cut short when a young man little older than you wearing an apron and holding a pencil and parchment comes to your table.

Waiter: "You five must be the new prentices, yes?"

Jonathan: "Indeed, that is true."

Waiter: "You've my congratulations. Now then, as the Samurai do not attend the annual feast on the day of the Rite, we traditionally offer all menu items for free on this day. None of you need worry about who pays the bill."

Navarre: "Oh, that's quite a relief. I certainly have more than enough Macca on me to pay for everyone here, though I'd rather not let Casualry-borns leech off of me. Now then, for an appetizer, I'll have the... Mandragora Salad? Am I to assume that's one of this establishment's specialties?"

The waiter nods.

Navarre: "I suppose I'll give that a shot. As for the main course, I'll take the lightly battered lobster tails."

Jonathan: "I'll be having the Mandragora Salad as well, along with... The roast eggplant, I've at last decided."

The waiter dutifully jots this down and asks you what you'll be having. You tell him your order and he moves on to Walter.

Walter: "Eh, to hell with it, I'll just have what she's having."

Navarre: "Did you not say just before that you disliked seafood? You realize Yuuna's having the salmon bisque, yes?"

Walter: "True... Well, nonetheless, t'is not too big a deal, I guess."

Navarre: "After you so incessantly... Ugh, you Casualries baffle me. Flynn, what's your order?"

You look over at Flynn, and quite surprisingly, he's back to looking at his menu. Wasn't he the one who asked everyone if they had their orders down in the first place?

Flynn: "Well, I had thought to get... but then I also wish to try... goodness me, the more I think on this, the less certain I am."

Navarre: "Oh, come now, is it that difficult?"

Flynn: "More so than you'd think..."

Navarre: "Fine, I'll order for you. A miso soup and grilled steak for this one."

Flynn: "Navarre, I'm yet undecided!"

Navarre: "How could one go wrong with either of those options?"

Flynn: "In combination, possibly. Yet, I'm unsure what I may pick in substitution... Very well, just put that down for me."

The waiter writes down Flynn's order and stows his pencil behind his ear.

Waiter: "Very well, complimentary ales will be brought out with your initial courses. Please be patient now."

The waiter walks away, leaving you five once again to your own devices. The soups and salads should come out rather quickly. What shall you do to pass the time until then?

>Think of Issachar. These other prentices seem nice, but it would have been good to have an old friend here with us, too.

Your mind hearkens back to your dear friend. At this point, he's doubtlessly returned to Kiccigiorgi now. Remembering the look on his face after his failure at the Gauntlet Rite evokes great melancholy in you. And now you're living his dream. You resolve silently to yourself that no matter what, you'll work twice as hard for his sake.

> Wonder what the Samurai actually do in Mikado. In what ways do they protect this place?

It is indeed curious how you're to begin your duties as Samurai and yet you've no idea what exactly this would entail. Yes, it's obvious you're meant to protect the peace, but how so? Mikado has not known conflict for nearly a millennium and a half, and whether this is because the Samurai is just that good at their duty or because there's no source of conflict to speak of, you wouldn't know. You ask your fellows what their speculation may be.

Walter: "You have a good point. I've always been curious as to what the Samurai's mission entails. The most popular rumor back home was that the Samurai fought any stragglers left behind from the War of the Unclean Ones, but by now they'd certainly all be deceased."

Jonathan: "I do hope our work is engaging. I'd regret to spend most of my days milling about the barracks rather than aiding the people."

Navarre: "Well, so long as my name is written in the history books, I'll not complain. Ah, so much as imagining it sends shivers down my spine! Navarre Étienne, valiant defender of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado! It has quite the ring to it, if I say so myself!"

Flynn: "Nonetheless, we won't discover just what it is that we're doing until tomorrow. For now, let's not concern ourselves with this matter."

After you've finished this brief discussion, the waiter comes by with a large platter that carries several bowls and drinks on it. One by one, he places everyone's orders of soup or salad and their drinks on the table.

Waiter: "There you all are! If there's anything more you would like, please, do not hesitate to ask!"

Jonathan: "Thank you, but that should be all for the time being."

Waiter: "Very well. If you'd like more ale, do not be afraid to ask."

The waiter takes his now empty platter and leaves as the warm, appetizing aroma of your salmon bisque reaches your nose. Taking the spoon laid out for you on the table, you scoop up some of the soup and have a small taste. It's rich, far richer than anything you've ever tasted, and its temperature is just shy of anything tongue-scalding. You swish it about in your mouth, taking in each and every bit of the flavor, before finally gulping it down. You look around and see how the others are enjoying their appetizers. Walter's practically devouring his soup, Navarre is poking at his salad, and Flynn and Jonathan both have their hands clasped in prayer. Oh, right, you forgot to say grace before eating. You feel slightly awkward about that, but decide to resume drinking/eating your soup. No need to worry over it now, is there?

You continue to dine until you hear Jonathan say something, addressing the table.

Jonathan: "I've just had an idea. You all recall how I'd earlier stated that my mother was a seamstress? Well, what if, to commemorate this occasion, I ask her to sow us all scarves?"

> That sounds like a cool idea! Let's do what Jonathan suggested.
>But can we do that now? Ask "outsiders" for things like that?

You express your enthusiasm for this prospect, but you consider whether you'd be allowed to accept gifts from sources outside the Samurai. You ask the others if they think it'll be permitted.

Jonathan: "Another good point. I'd not thought much on it. We can't do much if this goes against the code of conduct."

Walter: "There wouldn't be any cause for them to disallow it, though, would there? They are mere articles of clothing, after all."

Navarre: "Should push come to shove, I could always attempt some 'convincing', so to speak. I always do like to call Macca the great communicator."

Flynn: "There's no need for bribery, Navarre. I've looked into the Samurai Code a little and nothing there implies this be a violation."

Walter: "Samurai Code? But we've just been accepted today, however did you get your hands on that?"

Flynn: "There was a copy stowed below the bed in my room, so I occupied myself with it until we were called to dinner. It was missing nearly half its pages, however, so I'd assume someone must have left it behind.

Jonathan: "Quite curious. Well, at least we know whether this is permissible or not. I'll send for it posthaste when our dinner is done, and with any luck, mother should have them done in a matter of days. She makes quick work."

You five continue to converse and dine until the waiter returns once more with the main entrees. He gently sets them down on the table one at a time before addressing you all.

Waiter: "There you are. Should you need anything more, please feel free to call for me."

The waiter makes his exit once more, leaving you all to your dinners. You look eagerly at the freshly grilled chicken breast laid out before you on a toasted bun with crisp lettuce, juicy slices of tomato, several spices you don't know the names of, and a thin layer of melted cheese. You take your first bite, and every ingredient seems to blend into a wondrous symphony of flavor that serenades your tastebuds as you chew it up before finally swallowing it. It occurs to you that this one meal isn't even over and yet it's already been miles better than anything you've ever eaten back at home, and you immediately sink your teeth into the sandwich once again once the first mouthful hits your stomach. Soon enough, you've finished your meal, and the others at the table have too.

Walter: "Damn, that was superb!"

Navarre: "Surprisingly delightful. Though in hindsight, I'm not sure why I'd doubt the quality of an exclusive establishment such as this. I'm going to look forward to dining here more often."

Jonathan: "Indeed. I'm pleased by the selection of vegetarian options here."

Flynn: "So we all agree that this was a pleasant experience?"

Walter: "Barring the attitude of someone I'll not name, I'd certainly say so."

Jonathan: "That being said, the hour is rather late, is it not? I know not if there is a curfew, but even still, we should be off to bed before long."

Navarre: "Absolutely right there, Jonathan, I must be well-rested to maintain this complexion."

Walter: "Well, I personally wouldn't mind a look about the castle before my slumber. Just to become better acquainted with our new home."

Flynn: "I've seen more than enough of the castle myself, though I'd not mind joining you if you'd like."

You've already seen a decent bit of the castle earlier today, but it's your call if you'd like to join Walter and Flynn to have a look around or go straight off to bed like Jonathan and Navarre.

> Let's join Walter and Flynn. Let's see more of the area around us!

You did rest up earlier, so you don't quite feel tired enough to go straight to bed. Besides, you need to do something to work off that meal, however little. So, you proclaim that you'll be going along with Flynn and Walter and bid Navarre and Jonathan good night.

Jonathan: "So you'll be staying up a bit longer? Very well, Yuuna. I'll see you in the morning, good night until then. Do let me know how it goes."

Navarre: "Yes, tomorrow's the day we all show what we're made of. Let's hope you Casualries don't disappoint. Tally-ho, see you three hence."

Jonathan and Navarre exit the tavern, leaving you with Walter and Flynn.

Walter: "Now then, Flynn, you're in agreement on taking a trip with us?"

Flynn: "Well, I see no reason to oppose this. Let's not be too long, though. I know not when we're meant to gather for training to begin."

Walter: "Verily, it'll not be long. There's but one thing in particular I'm interested in anyhow."

Flynn: "Lead on, then. You have me curious now."

Walter signals for you two to follow him, and you all exit the tavern after bidding K farewell and thanks. As you step outside, you see that it's significantly darker than it was before, the sky now a deep midnight purple, displaying a vast array of twinkling stars. The area is lit with burning torches along the plaza walls and the gentle light given off by a half moon making its way across the sky. You stare up at the sky, mesmerized by the indescribable beauty of the myriad stars above you. You always liked to believe they were God's angels, watching over Mikado from afar, making sure that the kingdom was safe even in their absence. You know that it sounds a little silly, but at the same time, it just makes the sight all the more awe-inspiring. You're left just as enrapt by the view here as you were back home in Kiccigiorgi, spending all those lackadaisical nights staring up at the sky with Issachar...

Flynn: "Yuuna, are you quite alright?"

You snap out of your trance, returning to reality and bringing your focus back to your two fellows.

Walter: "The sky looks well tonight, but where I'm hoping to go, you'll get a much better view than you can from here."

Flynn: "Where exactly do you plan to head?"

Walter: "I was hoping to keep it secret, but I suppose I may need direction. Have you an idea of where the stairs may be when we step inside?"

Flynn: "I could show you the way if you'd like."

Walter: "Certainly, but from there I'd like to take charge."

Flynn: "I've no issue with that. Let's be on our way, then."

You three enter the barracks door and roam about the halls until Flynn shows you a staircase off to the side. From there, Walter leads you and Flynn up a few flights until you reach the top of the stairs and find yourselves on the roof of one of Aquila Plaza's exterior walls.

Walter: "Here at last! I've been aching to see the view from up here."

Flynn: "Well, we're not too far into the late hours of the night, but I yet doubt you'd be able to see much now."

Walter, posthaste, rushes over to the edge of the roof overlooking what lies to the west of Mikado Castle and gazes out toward the dimly-lit horizon. You can hear a saddened sigh from him.

Walter: "Damn, right you are... The darkness at this hour makes it difficult to see far. And here I had so hoped to look over the vastness of our kingdom with the billowing wind against me."

Flynn: "Well, the opportunity will present itself again in due time. Until then, some rest is in order for us three."

Walter: "Well, we shall need our energy for tomorrow, I suppose. I'm heading back down, Yuuna, feel free to do what you will."

Flynn: "Likewise. Good night, Yuuna. May you fare well come tomorrow's training."

With that, Flynn and Walter head back down the stairs, leaving you by your lonesome on the rooftop, a cold wind flapping your coat about. There's not much else to do now. Perhaps you should be off to bed as well...

>See how far we can see before we head back down.

You loom out to the horizon, deciding to judge for yourself what the view at night is like. It's decent enough, and you can see Kiccigiorgi and Lake Mikado off in the distance, but for the most part, you cannot make much else out. A few hills and forests, but little beyond the land's general outline. Seems likely that you'd have a better view in the daytime.

> Let's go to bed indeed.

Well, nothing left to do but retire for the night. You go back down the stairs and make your way to your room. There's little in the way of illumination besides some stray moonlight from the windows, but your eyes have adjusted to the darkness at this point. You see a new set of clothing in your wardrobe, some casual sleepwear, and change from your uniform into that before you lie down in bed, drifting readily off to sleep. You didn't do much over the course of the day, but even still, it certainly felt longer than it needed to be.

You are awoken the morning after by the sun's light striking your face through the windows. You raise a hand to guard your face from the light and sit up in your bed. Today's the day you properly begin your training. You remember that you placed Issachar's gift in the drawer yesterday. Seeing it fit to honor his absence, you retrieve the earring and put it on along with your Gauntlet and the rest of your uniform as you ready yourself to begin the day.

You make your way to Aquila Plaza and join your fellows, all standing by and waiting for briefing and training to begin.

Jonathan: "Ah, good morning, Yuuna."

Walter: "Hoy there! I trust you slept well?"

Navarre: "What's that on your ear? A Casualry fashion statement of some sort? I'd say you'd look better without it, but then, I suppose there wouldn't be much of an improvement anyhow."

Flynn: "Navarre, it's too early in the morning for this."

Navarre: "What else do you propose we do to pass the time? Besides, look at the thing! The girl needs some fashion advice, what better a source than moi?"

Hope: "You'll have enough time for talk of fashion after your first day of training."

You notice Master Hope striding in from the direction of the barracks. Immediately, everyone turns silent and turns their attention towards him.

Hope: "Good day then, prentices. I trust you're all well-rested and prepared for what you're to be put through today?"

> Yes, we are prepared!

You salute Master Hope as he stands before the five of you and affirm that you and your peers are ready for instruction.

Hope: "Glad to hear it. Now then, I see all five of you are already gathered here. Since we need not wait for anyone else, I'll begin right away. Listen well, prentices, as I'll not be repeating myself."

>Sit and listen.
> Listen to Hope.

You sit down on the floor with your legs crossed, eager to hear what Master Hope has to say. This brings light surprise to the faces of everyone, though your fellow prentices quickly decide to join you in being seated on the brick floor, looking up at Master Hope. Hope lets out a brief chuckle.

Hope: "You are all permitted to stand. You are adults, and moreover, you are fellow Samurai. Though I am your instructor and the Master Samurai, I'd rather not look down on any of you."

Following what he says, you all stand, feeling somewhat silly.

Hope: "Now then, over my years in the position of master Samurai, I've tried my best to make an attempt to put what I am about to tell you in the most delicate of ways, but I've found there is no easy way of relaying this information. The Samurai are protectors of the peace, warding off anything that may bring harm to the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. That much, I am certain you all know. But I must ask you, do you know why the Samurai are never seen in action by the public at large?"

Silence permeates the air.

Jonathan: "In truth, I struggle to think of any reasoning for this."

Flynn: "As do I."

Walter: "I had just assumed the Samurai would never bothered with Casualry provinces like my home."

Navarre: "Well, you wouldn't be wrong there..."

Hope: "In truth, the battles we Samurai wage are kept secret, and for good reason. For the past millennium and a half, we've fought off the single greatest threat to Mikado conceivable, an enemy that has long since the days of old faded into myth. The enemy in question? Demons, plain and simple."

Demons.

Demons.

You try to wrap your head around what master Hope just said, as do your fellow prentices. Samurai spend their days fighting the very demons spoken of in the tales of Mikado's founding. Is he perhaps kidding you? Is this all an elaborate joke? In the back of your mind, you desperately hope that the rest of your days will not be spent fighting a force known to be so powerful and eldritch. You look to the other recruits, and they all share your disbelief in varying amounts.

Jonathan: "Demons? You mean, the ancient lore of centuries past... They're all true? The path to the underworld, Naraku? The War of the Unclean Ones? They aren't mere legend?"

Navarre: "Oh, come now, Jonathan, this is clearly jest! He's trying to spook us newcomers! A hazing ritual! Something of that nature, it must be!"

Hope: "My words are not false. You will find out this much when your beginner training starts."

Walter: "Beginner training? We'll be facing demons as beginner training?"

Navarre: "You don't need to go on, the joke has been conveyed properly. Haha, yes, demons exist, you had us all going there!"

Hope: "Navarre, I've established prior that this is no joke. Today marks our first foray into the depths of Naraku."

Goodness, this seems to have escalated in a sharp manner. Neither you nor your comrades quite know what to say, you're all taken quite aback (Navarre especially so). Hope does seem quite serious about this...

Hope: "I understand that this might be difficult to take in, but all the fairy tales and myths you've heard in your life are true in some way or another. This may all seem very sudden, but you'll find within time that adapting to your new situation won't come with much difficulty. The Gauntlets chose you five for a reason, after all."

Flynn: "Come to think of it, what are the Gauntlets for? And moreover, did you say we would be venturing into Naraku? Forgive me for speaking out, but that's rather abrupt for newcomers' training, is it not?"

Navarre: "Oh, I am most definitely not looking forward to this..."

Hope: "Worry not, you won't be venturing beyond the second floor in these first exercises. That should provide you with a controlled environment in which you may learn the ropes. The demons there should be weak enough for you to handle without much difficulty."

Navarre: "And what, pray tell, would constitute as easy in this context?"

Hope: "If you keep your wits about you and approach the situation with care, the demons you'll face should be easy to handle. If you're careless, there's no guarantee you'll survive an encounter in one piece. I say that these are the weakest demons you'll face, but even still, you must take utmost care when dealing with them."

Walter: "So we make one wrong move and we may very well die?"

Walter slams his fist into his palm, a brash grin spreading across his face.

Walter: "Sounds like just the sort of challenge I crave!"

Navarre: "This excites you? Most men would be quaking in their boots at this prospect! Not I, of course, most certainly not I."

Judging by his quivering hands and the sweat starting to emerge on his face, you get the distinct feeling that Navarre's a poor liar.

>Ask Hope, "Is there anything we'll need for this?"

Hope: "You have some of the necessary equipment with you currently. Your uniform and your Gauntlet are quite important, but you cannot head into Naraku without better equipment. Hence, I'll be giving each of you some Holy Water and a small stipend of Macca to purchase anything more you may need."

Hope produces five small bags, each filled with Macca coins. You all take a bag and stow the Macca in your coats. Two monks arrive from the plaza gate, one carrying many small vials of water and the other bearing a variety of weapons. The monk with the water gives you all five vials each, which is likewise stowed near your Macca.

Hope: "You will also be provided a weapon of your choosing from our armory. Though there are four types present for you to take, they all have the same effectiveness in combat. Take whatever one strikes your fancy."

The second monk lays out eight weapons on the ground. Two swords, two daggers, two spears, and two maces. Immediately, Walter grabs a spear.

Walter: "This differs from the fishing tridents I'm familiar with, but of all these I see myself taking the easiest to this."

Navarre is next, and he picks up a dagger.

Navarre: "This seems to be the least strenuous to use. I'll hold onto this."

Jonathan follows after, and he chooses a mace.

Jonathan: "I see myself as being most comfortable with this. I know not if demons bleed, but I'd rather not learn firsthand."

Flynn follows behind and takes a sword without hesitation.

Flynn: "I find it best to stick with what I know for the time being."

And now it's your turn. There is one of each weapon remaining. Which one will you take?

Are you ready? Go live!
