Opened. Change occured more than a year ago, so it may be too late for a helper message.

Not liking the text overlay obscuring the destroyed Earth, so I'll vote in favor of reverting the image.

I definitely prefer the old pic.

The Saturian ring feels out of place. What about [1]?

I think it adds to the change of the Earth. The material lost in the gaping hole had to go somewhere.

Reading both tropes makes it look like this is going to be hard to image.

Earth shattering kaboom is about blowing up a planet. This is more along the lines of the planet becoming uninhabitable or at least hostile, potentially leading to a mass exodus.

Maybe post-mushroom war Adventure Time Earth? I think the planet seems more stable than in the original image.

This signature says something else when you aren't looking at it.

The problem with a skyline is that it doesn't show that the entire earth is affected and not only one city.

This is from Wall-E. You will notice that Michigan's upper peninsula is submerged in water, as well as the bit of Canada east of Lake Huron, and the Earth looks pretty barren. [1]

[up] No, I didn't notice it. It's not very clear.

^ That's already on Hostile Terraforming.

[up][up][up]Well, that's taking it a bit literally. I pointed it out because I knew that not everyone would notice it. The upper peninsula doesn't look like that.

If you need to point it out, it's generally not clear enough.

I really want to suggest the Earth at the end of End of Evangelion but it'll be completely obtuse to anyone that hasn't seen it.

I vote to pull the current anyway. It illustrates Earth-Shattering Kaboom, not just the biosphere dying out.

Current has to go, at any rate, for the reasons Morgenthaler stated.

I noticed the description never talks about the earth getting destroyed / blown up. It's more about the earth dying as a living environment and perhaps become forgotten and later rediscovered.

The clock's up and the only thing we've got solid consensus for is to remove the current, so it's gone and the tag's adjusted. Locking up.
