I still agree with letting it be as a complaining trope for deceptive presentation/marketing and moving it to the Darth Wiki.

Make it In Universe Examples Only. We don't need more complaint tropes, Darth Wiki or no.

I disagree.

Everyone needs to vent negitive opinions every now and then and reading them can be quite cathartic.

That's why we have complaint magnet tropes like So Bad It's Horrible to soak it up and contain it.

I like in universe only. If someone felt the need to fill the gap Deceptive Marketing could be made as trivia to cover the techniques without the inherent condemnation.

I disagree. Move it to the Darth Wiki.

[up]We already have So Bad, It's Horrible and Ruined FOREVER, as well as a few others. We really don't need more tropes dedicated to complaining, even on Darth Wiki. That said, I like Deceptive Marketing, as that could be applied to works, even if they aren't/weren't low-quality.

Polish the Turd specifically refers to Deceptive Marketing and the resulting malcontent though, something that's not really covered under either of those tropes.

Seconded.

Horrible is for bad media in general, Polish the Turd is for when sub-par or downright bad media is deceptively marketed or presented to hide it's flaws.

Distortion covering up bad playing in music

A game that's bad in every other regard given good graphics hide how broken it is.

Showing a demo version with far better graphics than the final product will have running on an absurd machine (hello, Watch Dogs)

Coating a otherwise bad movie in slick special effects to distract from the shitty acting and horrid script

It's about trying to deceive the consumer and distract them from the gaping flaws instead of producing a solid product.

[up] So... an "official" version of Worse Than It Sounds? (Which is already Darth Wiki, but it's also made for "dark fun")

You could say creators themselves invoking the trope with marketing is one form of it.

The second type would dressing the work up like the aforementioned covering up sub-par musicians with distortion and loudness that drowns out the bad playing or making a bad game look pretty.

Honestly, my first impulse was to send it to Darth, but after a quick once-over there might be a third option.

This might make a good index-ish page if we trim it down to the "Tropes used to polish turds" list. This is the internet, and we are not the other wiki, so we don't have to stick by industry terms; it's ok if we have a page about an industry practice. However, right now this feels like complaining.

I vote we trim examples, make this an index, and fix the explanation for each listed trope to sound less like complaining.

If we did that I'd be for moving examples to the correct pages instead of cutting.

Since it looks like we're split on how to handle this, I will start up a crowner.

Guys, I just found Very False Advertising.

What's the difference of that trope and this one?

We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.

[up] Very False Advertising is lies in promotional material. Polish the Turd is buttering up faults.

As for the crowner, last call for votes.

[up] Isn't the purpose of "lies in the promotional material" buttering up faults?

We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.

Sometimes, but other times it's not the case. Polish the Turd can sometimes bring up what's desirable in a subject that is anything but, although it's possible that they are telling the truth.

Very False Advertising runs purely on deception; lying about the subject to entice you to get/visit it, and it's anything but once you get/visit the subject.

I'm not complaining, but I'm surprised that "turn it into an index for tropes used to Polish the Turd" wasn't on that crowner.

That was an oversight. Sorry!

Anyone want to give that option a chance or are we sticking with IUEO? We'll need to see if there are enough In-Universe examples for the latter, first.

I say sort through the examples first to see what we have before we consider making it an index.
