Opening this and clocking it.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI say move all wicks that aren't already there to Awesome Mc Cool Name and cut this.
I second this action.
Despite the claim in the first sentence, I seriously doubt anyone has ever said "ooh, Johnny! What a cool name!"
Merge as suggested.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Yeah. This is a pointless subtrope that adds nothing of significance to its supposed parent trope. Supporting a cut.
I don't mind a merge.
We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.Good idea
+1 to merge.
I'm good with a merge.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportWe seem to have a general consensus, and, tellingly, zero dissent or even expressions of doubt. Do we need a crowner, or can we just call this?
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Eh, a few more comments won't hurt.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMerging has my blessing.
I fully agree with merging.
I don't want this to fall off the map, and I'll happily make a crowner if we need one.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Added crowner!
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynmanthe merge seems popular
Yep, looks safe to call. Let's get to work on the merge.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportHmm, the first thing I notice from looking at the examples on the page is that a few of them seem to be treating "Johnny" as cool itself.
First example from Anime: Johnathan "Johnny" Joestar. Is "Joestar" really awesome mccool? I really can't decide with that one.
Comic examples look good.
In Film, "Johnny Guitar" is kinda awesome, I guess, but then it says "His real name, Johnny Logan, is just as impressive."
This is clearly going to require more than just simple copying... :/
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Considering how Awesome McCoolname is not limited to surnames, I don't see any issue with examples treating the first name "Johnny" as cool in itself.
That would make sense if "Johnny" were an awesome name, but it's not. It's merely a common diminutive of the most common first name in the English language. Having an extremely common name is hardly awesome.
Diminutives generally suggest youth. Most Johnnies turn into Johns after puberty (in fiction and real life). The ones that remain Johnny often tend to be (at least in fiction) a bit immature, if anything.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I was always under the impression that this trope requires an in-universe reaction about the coolness of the person's name, and that it's not just "anything any troper finds cool" (otherwise that would be an Audience Reaction, which this trope is not). So if Aerith and Bob is in play, and the latter is treated as a cool and unusual name (even if it's not for the general public), then it could fit.

A star means the issue is resolved and only dewicking remains. Sorry to disappoint you, but this trope is no more (true, it may still exist now, but will get chopped once the wicks are all updated to Awesome Mc Cool Name).

I dont know, some works do treat the name Johnny being a cool name.
World Of Warcraft has a running joke with a guy going by Johnny Awesome a useless blood elf raider NPC who is a Take That! in joke about players. He thinks he is all that and goes afk during boss fights and such. Blizz seemed to write him as he thought that name was cool, Johnny and all.
It specifically follows the Johnny Mc Cool Name pattern.

Well, Jack Attack and Tragic Rose were cut for a reason, right?

Crown Description:
Vote up for yes, down for no.
This "trope" is blatantly Awesome Mc Cool Name but focused on a specific name. Why do we still have this?
