Honestly, I don't think the current combo is that bad...it's not great but it gets the concept across clearly enough for me to give it a weak Keep Until Better Image Suggested.

I think the dogs playing Russian Roulette one works quite well. There's the revolver, the dog acting as ref showing them one bullet, and , I don't see a need to be familiar with The Deer Hunter for it to work. Yeah. I like it. That one gets my vote.

I didn't notice the "ref" showing the "players" a single bullet. Without that I didn't think the image was good, with it I do. Can the one bullet be mentioned (even indirectly) in the caption, to call attention to it?

The current image just shows a revolver with one chambered bullet. It doesn't show the game itself being played, which I would assume is the more pertinent component of the trope. From The Deer Hunter

ETA: Hmm... on further reflection, what we really need is something that combines both 1) someone putting in the bullets and 2) with the gun to their heads. If you only have the first then it's just someone firing at something with few bullets, if you only have the latter then it might as well be someone who's generally suicidal.
