It was...eh. They toned the Minions back a lot but most of their scenes were barely tied into the plot, so it was mostly pointless fluff. Dru was annoying as heck and any conflict between him and Gru was solved as soon as it started, something that I've noticed in a lot of Illumination's films that still bugs me. The subplots just didn't really go anywhere I guess? They felt kind of like they needed to pad things out a little. The Bratt guy was probably the most memorable character but one thing bugged me: they keep alluding to him having fought Gru before, but they never, like, show us, they just tell us that Gru always fought him but never stopped him.

It's slightly better than Illumination's worst but it still feels like they're just aping the success of the first one while barely putting any effort into making it above "meh". The first film had quite a bit of charm to it that the two sequels lacked.

They didn't even need to make a 1 of these, much less a 2 & 3...

Anywho, am I the only one who's noticed that the Minions are big rip-offs of the Rabbids? tongue

[up] I still maintain that the first one is a genuinely well-written film, but it should've stopped there.

^^I totally called that before even seeing them in action, just judging by their appearance in the promotional art. I don't really like them, but I like the other characters in Despicable Me, and they're worth wading through.

I'm starting to like the Latin American title, "My Favorite Villain".

Except he's not really a villain anymore- At least not by the end of the first movie. It would have been really cool to see that kind of plot

It's amazing how these movies keep giving the middle sister, Edith, nothing to do. She suppose to be like a trouble maker, but they don't expand on it. The third movie would have been more interesting if they made Edith want to be a villain herself, but Gru disapproves of it. Then when the twin brother comes into play, her enthusiasm to be like Dru creates family conflict.

That's a creative idea. Unfortunately Illumination has shown themselves to dislike creative ideas.

Right, and for the other movies it's easier to think they're going "And here's my new favorite villain to fight!"

Does anyone think they'll make Despicable Me 4?

I thought Steve Carell said he wouldn't return for any future films (except for cameos), but I could be wrong.

Well there is Minions 2 coming in 2020 (God to think that it would take them this long just to make another one most likely in the same quality), and I'm pretty sure at the end of the first one Gru hires the Minions so I doubt it would just be a cameo.

Saw this movie the other day. I was surprised at how much more I liked it than Despicable Me 2, which I felt was underwhelming compared to the first one. It's not amazing, but it's a more fun story all around with cool character stuff, etc.

It left me thinking two things. The first, that it's still a perfect idea to have a timeskip to when the girls are teenagers, with the plot that one or more of the girls want to go into villainy after Gru has now completely reformed (with Uncle Dru in the mix, it works even more). The second (though not necessarily at the same time as the first) that this franchise would probably work very well as a television series, especially as it keeps adding to the family.

[up][up] You'd be surprised at the way guaranteed money changes these things eventually.

[up]I have been fervently hoping for a while that this property gets the same treatment as Tangled and Hotel Transylvania with a mostly Slice of Life series (though hopefully much better than the latter). A rich world to explore, small but solid core of characters, and you can recast as necessary.

And it does not need to look amazing; not everything needs to look like the later seasons of Race to the Edge to be enjoyable-look what Tangled: The Series did with a relatively simple flourish on 2D animation.
