Creating a History For a Town with A Dark Secret

So I'm writing a story centering on a Town with a Dark Secret, set in the United States, and I'm trying to come up with a fictional history for the town. A few questions:

  • During the American Revolution, what ethnic/religious groups were Loyalists and which were Patriots? I understand that Scotch-Irish and Germans supported the Revolution, while people who were followers of the Church of England tended to be Loyalists. Were there any other ethnic/religious divides during the American Revolution? What about during the ratification of the Constitution? Who supported the new Constitution and who wanted to maintain the Articles of Confederation?
  • I understand that this setting requires a level of isolation. However, would it be okay if in the past this town used to be more connected to the outside world? Maybe it could have been a commercial center or even involved in national politics (maybe mention that the town was a campaign stop off for some presidential candidate)?
  • How should society in this town be organized? Should it be controlled by a dictatorial city council, or should be more along the lines of a religious cult, with a charismatic preacher-like character keeping people in line? Alternatively, could the people of the town work together in secret to keep the truth from being uncovered?
Those were some ideas I was throwing around, what do you think?

The Iroquois Confederation, for instance, were divided about whom to support. Most, at the urging of Mohawk warrior Joseph Brant, sided with the Crown (a lot of natives wanted to stay the hell out of the whole business, but many, of course, weren't able to). Many native tribes were afraid that colonials independent of the British Crown would decide not to honor treaties the tribes had with the Crown and encroach upon their land. Once it was all over, the newly independent Americans didn't feel particularly friendly towards the tribes who had fought against them. The situation was mirrored after the War of 1812 (about which it has been said that the only real losers were the Native Americans).

What kind of secret do the town have? It is good for us to know that if you want more specific help.

[up]I was thinking that an Eldritch Abominabtion could live beneath the town. Maybe some human sacrifice to keep the creature satisfied. Think The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

[up]Mostly, if the town follows the state and federal laws to a T they can deflect most of the attention. The hardest part is making sure everybody is in on the secret. It just takes one Message in a Bottle to summon Scully and Muller and the entire thing escalates from there.

Going off of the above, it could take only one E-mail or instant message to get the word out and summon the outside authorities. Which means that you'd have to make sure that any potential victims/sacrifices get their smart-phones taken away or disabled at the very first opportunity.

If the town has a history dating back to the Revolution, it must be located in New England or the Mid-Atlantic States. Are there any places left with poor cell phone/Wi-Fi reception these days?

[up] Maybe in Northern Maine. Also it could be located in Appalachia. Even the Midwest, setting the area was illegal during the Revolution but I'm sure some people did it anyways.

All the Appelachian states (Kentucky, Tennisee, etc), were all being settled back before the Revolution. The French established trading posts throughout the Great Lakes going back to the early 1700's.
