You mean Windigos? Clover the Clever and her friends fought them off with the warmth of their friendship, and through that, they united the three races and founded Equestria. Hearth's Warming was then created to celebrate this historical event; according to "A Hearth's Warming Tail", it's a very important holiday as the warmth and compassion of the ponies help keep the Windigos at bay.
To answer your question, I've never fought Windigos before, and hopefully there will never be a time when they come back.
