Cool new Disney series that nobody's really talking about set in the same universe as Sofia the First, about a 16-year-old princess named Elena on the road to becoming the Queen. There's a very complicated backstory about how an evil sorceress took over the kingdom for 41 years while Elena was trapped in an amulet and her family was hidden in a portrait, eventually Elena was freed from the amulet and saved the kingdom, there was a wizard involved somehow, but they kind of just brief you on that and don't go into it much right away, preferring to start off on a lighter "adventure of the week" format.

Elena is really a busybody, but there's these three cool and quirky flying jaguars, a talking spirit fox (or is he a wolf?) who reminds me of Coyote from Gunnerkrigg Court , a musically inclined grandpa, a grandmotherly grandma, an inventor little sister who Elena has a really cute relationship with, an adventurous blonde best friend, a casual wizard-in-training, a dillweed of a cousin (Really, Esteban? Really?), and Gabe, who is seriously the best. Gabe is fantastic.

I really like Gabe.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

FINALLY! Someones talking about this show! I find the concept so interesting- what if a disney princess had a show rather than a movie? Its a concept I like as Episodic is my favorite way to tell stories. also, all the characters have been great so far, especially with Elena's charcterization so far. this show really sets up a good premise/arc for her.

Finally watched the two first episodes and I loved them. The characters are really likeable (aside of Estevan. Fuck you, Estevan), the premise is original and the music is glorious. Elena is an heroine you can really root for, I want to see her progress.

I know I've been grumping around about this show a lot, but I decided I will try to calm down and enjoy it. I still believe we Latin Americans and Hispanics deserve a movie for our representative princess, but I guess that's only a matter of time anyway.

Episode 3 was good. Very "heartwarming." wink I hope we see Tiroca again some time.

That song though. At first Elena and Naomi weren't about it. And then...they got into it. tongue

Sad news: The production company in charge of the show has shut down. i don't know how this will effect the show, but it may take some time for more episodes to be produced.

So I finally saw a couple of E o A episodes. Other than being a *little* too heavy on the Spexico elements, its an OK show. Not too original, it might almost be titled "Hispanic Teenage Sofia The First." Still I liked the characters, especially the inventor/little sister. I was actually surprised by the episode in which Esteban saved Elena's life; I was not expecting him to be redeemed so soon.

Sorry to hear about the company going bankrupt, hopefully Disney will keep the show going.

[up][up]Honestly even if it is "too heavy" at least it has a great atmosphere and isn't just a generic fantasy setting...also the characters are definitely more interesting and the "teenage" thing allows it to be that much more mature and action/plot-oriented. Definitely a big step up from Sofia, and I enjoyed that show, as a casual viewer.

I don't think he was redeemed, so much as the episode making it completely clear that "no, he's not actually a villain, he really is just that stubborn and annoying like seriously."

But yeah, I really hope they got a chance to finish season 1 at least? The airing schedule is so erratic as it is...damn. This show has so much potential, but...YIKES...

I just wanted to point out that, as a Latino myself, I notice things like the villagers from the Rock Monsters episode being obviously based on Peruvian natives stands out in a Pseudo-Spain. I guess they wanted to be as inclusive of our roots as possible? Though they'd need at least one Black character for that...

Also, no the 'villain' is not redeemed yet. But I expected him to be an unsympathetic cad for a while longer, rather than dedicate a whole episode basically to show how much the cast cares about him.

So, I recently just stumbled upon this page. I just want to ask how I can make subpages for the character sheet, much like how Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Amphibia also have character subpages.

Here is another podcast interview that Craig Gerber took part in. Here are some notable highlights :

7:00- He mentioned how Gaby Moreno's music was a big inspiration for the series, hence why she sang the theme song.

9:30- He mentions Finding Nemo as a big reason why he pursued animation.

10:35- He relates to certain elements of various characters, but he relates to Mateo the most.

14:20- He once mentioned the show would have had an overarching villain, but that would have been tiresome, hence the change of course in action, such as switching from Shuriki to the Delgados.

15:00- While still having a larger story, there is still a mandate for more stand alone, breather episodes.

16:45- They work on many episodes at the same time since it takes about 18 months, or 1 year and 6 months, to finish an episode. They even worked on seasons 1-3 at the same time at one point.

20:45- He mentions a big map for the worlds of Sofia and Elena that he would like to release.

22:30- He always had the intention to start Elena off on a more serialized note , compared to Sofia developing one later on. He mentioned still having to mix standalone episodes and plot driven episodes. It's a balancing act, but one that works.

27:40- Because of networks airing episodes out of order, he mentions that like 3 episodes in season 3 can be aired out of order. The other episodes have some sort of continuity to them.

28:55- Because of the networks wanting to hone in on specific age groups and nothing inbetween, Elena eventually aired on the Disney Junior channel only instead of Disney Junior and Disney Channel because those in the 2-5 demographic made up the majority of the audience, at least 70%. Its kind of like a Lion Guard situation where it's also similarly dark yet also still lighthearted enough to attract this 2-5 demographic .

32:45- While there are definitely some things that changed over the series, he mentions the ending as well as season 3's big plot twist were all thought up ahead of time.

35:15- In regards to the darker tone, though its not the whole intention, he mentions being able to show the more realistic aspect to any situation. As he said, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs .

38:45- He responds to the question of killing off a character. He kept this vague enough, though he mentions how something like death is something little kids could experience with their loved ones.

42:00- He thinks of the various character dynamics, both how they play off of Elena, and how they play off of each other.

43:30- When it comes to taking on stories that have been done before, he mentions that he wants to make sure it feels new when it comes to these characters.

44:30 - He mentions the actors ad libbing, particularly with Jess Harnell's character King Hector .

47:30- He says Elena was has favorite character to create since she was the toughest to create due to how hard it is to create main characters, where you want them to have real charm and likability, yet still believably flawed.

50:00- He mentions how he likes writing King Hector, and even mentions him returning in season 3.

55:20- He mentions there's a 3 part episode called Coronation Day. It may or may not be a series finale. It's like how Sofia has had 3 part episodes in later episodes. He also mentions that the order for season 3 has been extended. With however and whenever the show ends, they still do the show that like to do.

58:05- He mentions wanting to use various folk tales and legends from Central America and various other places, partly because of how European stories and legends are heavily used. He also mentions a story on La Llorna being rejected.

1:01:00- I'm trying to remember what episode, but he mentions how Skylar and Luna are cousins.

1:02:50- He mentions that while it's not too hard to write a story about teenagers without romance, it's also more fun to write stories with romance in them . I assume episodes like A Lava Story are a way to get around this.

1:05:50- He mentions Gabe not always getting the big win , mainly when it comes to playing off of Elena.

1:07:20- Without spoilers, he mentions a new kingdom and a visit from an unexpected character. He also mentions there will be a Hanukkah episode this year instead of Navidad, and it involves another kingdom . At 1:09:30, he mentions the Hanukkah episode will be his directorial debut, and there will be a lot of episodes this fall.

1:11:00- He mentions some episodes possibly being first on Disney Now.

1:13:30- Carla started the series at 17.

1:14:00- There's a flashback episode.

1:16:25- In Secret Of Avalor, the royal guards are loyal to Avalor, and only became loyal to Shuriki when she took over.

Someone looked at the Disney press release for next month, and found the descriptions for the 2 Elena episodes. Notably, there's a mention of Chatana, the sorceress that was mentioned in "Not Without My Magic" . I also find it interesting how Auli'i Cravalho's guest appearance is 1 day before the 3 year anniversary of Moana.

Here's an 8 minute animatic from storyboard artist James Little for today's episode.
