Regarding the "skipping posts" issue, in the Complete Monster thread, which I had read several times since the DB change, last night I left off with this post as the last one, but when I opened it up just a minute ago it skipped straight to the next page, as if I had read posts 57074 and 57075 (which I hadn't, and IIRC I had used "mark all read" on the forum before those posts were made).

The sticky header is now fixed. See the Example mentioned by Totemic Hero. It now has the first post in the yellow box again.

And I'm looking into the other issues reported.

For me, the post-skipping seems to work like this:

Clicking on the thread will automatically take me to the last post from it I read, like it's supposed to, unless the thread has progressed to a new page since then, in which case it will take me automatically to the top of the new page.

I have the same thing happening to me.

Yeah, I'm seeing that as well. I can find where I'm supposed to be by pulling the post number out of the URL and backtracking until I find it, but that's a placeholder solution.

Odd. The "cannot edit your own post" and page-skipping issues isn't happening on my end.

Ok. I found the reason for the "page-skipping" issue and it looks to be only affecting some threads. It's because pagination was previously based on the highest sequence number and in the latest revision it was set to the number of posts. In most cases those are the same but it looks like for some threads the sequence number is higher due to missing posts. My guess is posts were manually deleted at some point due to spam or something. Working on switching this back to use highest sequence number.

Also, I found out why the random slow down on some threads as well. It was effecting threads with purely numeric ID's as it wasn't using the right optimization in the database query. That part is now fixed. And it's still effecting threads with more than 10K posts. I can fix this by using a slightly different database structure. Working on that now as well. More updates to follow ...

Also, another issue that seems to exist is that noninteger page numbers in threads no longer shift the posts up and down in the thread page.

I'm going to assume that's because the new pagination code, in counting the actual number of posts, uses integer division instead of floating point division to calculate page increments. Which is how I would do it; the fact that you could use fractional page counts has to have been unintentional.

Ok. I think the "page-skipping" issue is fixed now. I switched it back to using the max sequence number as the total number of posts.

Also, I'm about to shutdown adding new posts for the next 5 minutes. Don't freak out! I just have to adjust the database structure so there isn't a slow down on those large threads.

Ok. Forum posting is back. That should fix the issue with the large threads being slow. How are things looking now?

Here is the one I was using as the example: (previously it took a few seconds to load and it showed that page as larger than the total)

I am still getting page skipping, even on pages I have never opened before (such as this one) it takes me to the top of the most recent page.

Sebastian Gray, can you tell me what page you are clicking from that is causing you the issue (thread watchlist, thread list on title, thread list on time)? The threads that I found issues before are all working for me so I can't re-produce the issue.

When I click the title of the thread, it always sends me to the last page, however, the url for it is always correct. Like it saying Post 5, Page 1 in the url.

Irene, can you post the link that is giving you this trouble?

I already went through my normal topics, but here's an example; https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13368380110A17360000&page=561#13996

It brought me to page 561, but 13996 is from the previous page of 560. It basically ignored where it should be, and skipped a page overall.

The posts aren't lost, just ignored in the coding.

From what I can tell, the current code will always take you to the latest page of a thread, regardless of any unread posts. If the last unread post is on an earlier page you'll be set to the top

[up]This has not happened to me yet.

The sent to the top is easy to explain. Each forum post has an anchor associated to it with name that is its number. the #1234 part of the url always jumps to the anchor if it is on the page. If it is not, the page starts right at the very top.

Yes, the problem seems to be in the relationship between page number and post number. Here's another example URL:

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13002734860A72200100&page=254#6325

In theory, this URL would take me to page 254 and put me on post 6325. It successfully takes me to page 254, but it leaves me at the top of the page because post 6326 is the first post of the page. It should take me to page 253 and put me on post 6325.

Consequentially, I don't think deleted posts are the problem here. There are 25 posts to a page. With no deleted posts, the final post of page 253 should be post 6325, which it is. Instead, the problem appears to be that the URL is coded to select the most recent page before anchoring you to the next post rather than selecting the page that post is on.

Not a database structure change, just something I asked for the Tech Wishlist but was implemented the wrong way (through the forum interface rather than the createconversation interface)

Further documentation of the thread jump issue.

In the media forum thread for Zootopia I left off on post #2285, page 92 last time I viewed the thread, yesterday. When I opened it a few minutes prior to this post I was sent straight to page 93, though the URL in the location bar for my browser (Waterfox 44.0.3 for the record) still showed the address for post #2285.
