A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

It's never just right, isn't it? Always something.
The Get Down was axed a few weeks ago, as well.
Very aggravating. I loved that show. It felt like X-Men crossed with a more international Orphan Black.

It is not "suggested", he is black. Here his origins story◊, which was published in his first appearance. He is of mixed heritage (white mother), but he was clearly portrayed as a black person.
Netflix has been upfront about being quicker to cancel shows.
I read that in the case of The Get Down it was more that it was a popular show but Baz Luhrmann was too busy with his movies to commit to another season.
That's interesting. I've heard it was a budget problem. :/
Trust you? The only person I can trust is myself. The Underground was canceled too, and that's being viewed as especially harsh blow because the show kept a lot of emphasis on telling stories of the Underground Railroad without forced white saviors, and also for accuracy in depicting Harriet Tubman as a disabled hero too.
I wasn't a big fan of Sense8. It felt like it was trying too hard to be deep and worldly and meaningful but, I dunno, the main hook just wasn't interesting, and it never really justified the constant SOCIETY BAD FIGHT THE MAN BRUH attitude the whole show pushed so hard. I haven't seen S2 yet, but I'm unsure if that'll change very much.
I didn't watch Sense 8, but my sibling did. He'll be pretty disappointed, probably as disappointed as I was when Marco Polo got canned.
I mean I know it was a story with a forced white perspective "lead" because gotta market the white male, but the other plots and characters were pretty interesting to me.

Oissu!I was totally behind The Get Down getting cancelled because...$120 million budget. You could have the Defenders fight Red Ronin with that kind of budget.
Sense 8 from what I understand has less of an insane budget but still ran afoul of Netflix purposefully being ready to can shows.
Spoilers for Wonder Woman. A thread on Native representation in the film (graded mostly good, but several embarrassing moments).

I really didn't like Sense8 Season 1 very much. The whole thing felt very generic and bland underneath all the production quality and glitz. It's Heroes Season 1 without any of what made Heroes Season 1 so fun and interesting.
Good fucking job on Wonder Women's success tho. I was a little skeptical at first because DC hasn't made a truly great movie since The Dark Knight, but no, it was really good, and deserves every penny it makes at the box office. I really think this could lead to some real chan- ah who the fuck are we kidding the only lesson Hollywood'll take from this is to make a Wonder Women Cinematic Universe and run it into the ground.
I'm just coming back from Fukuda Kouji's Sayonara, a film featuring a very marginalized minority: androids… Yeah, just that is pretty weird.
But it also features a South-African born Japanese woman (I'm not sure she has the nationality but she's pretty much Japanese at heart) and a son of Zainichi Korean as her boyfriend. So triply unusual in the representation department.
The film is weird in a lot of ways, really, but just these elements caught my attention. It's kinda relevant to the plot too, as it's strongly implied their status is the reason they're not high on the priority list for evacuation − the plot being that the entire Japanese population is being evacuated overseas after a nuclear disaster.

That sounds interesting, but I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the whole "promoted as the first movie to feature an android performing opposite a human actor" thing.
It's a puppet, guys. If that's an android, well, it was beaten to the punch by... so many movies, but for now let's go with Jaws.

Still, it's pretty clear during the first scene of the film that the main human actress doesn't know how to act with such a "partner"… I almost thought Bryerly Long was the android at first. >.>

Word on the street is, she's either appearing on the show or directing an episode.
I still can't decide if I like Sense 8 or not (I am leaning towards I liked the concept and some of the storylines, but was annoyed by the execution overall), but I do think that cancelling it without some kind of conclusion is a mistake on Netflix part. If they get a reputation of not finishing their shows properly, it can seriously damaging the brand.
What's the general consensus on her directing skills?
I heard she directed some episodes of Elementary and those were apparently very good.
It's kind of one step forward (finally, a Brazilian), two steps back (wrong ethnicity).
