What does Latino underrepresentation have to do with this? I hate yaoi with a passion but I'm not sure how the two are connected.

Edit - Jesus Christ, people are STILL arguing Pidge is trans when I posted an article indicating that was NOT the intention. From the Washington Post!

Really, nothing at all, but shipping Fan Dumb is trying to use it as an excuse for Ship-to-Ship Combat by claiming their ship has the moral high ground due to having a brown person in it while their rival ship doesn't, because Asians apparently count as white people now (no we fucking aren't).

[up]While unlikely it's not impossible for her to be trans in the form of a trans girl, I'd leave those people alone. She's very adamant about being female-identifying though, so much so that it's ironically misgendering to claim she isn't.

[up] I only ask being Puerto Rican and an outright rarity in manga and anime (besides Mr. Useless Chad who's Mexican).

Just do the classic Keith/Lance/Allura love triangle IF YOU MUST have a pairing. At least that has history.

[up]x3 They're not connected, I just brought it up cuz we're talking about shipping and he/she was talking about the kind of people that have come about because of the show.

@Shipping wars: I want to see Keith and Lance hook up just so they can mirror the scene where everyone finds out about Pidge's identity. Like, no one's surprised by it at all.

So yeah anyway I watched this with no previous knowledge of Voltron and it was ok I guess

I just really dislike how the fandom is always ignoring Hunk and the only times he's mentioned is as an extension of Lance.

Well the only reason Pidge seems to ever get any love is from the trans headcanons.

Hunk is great. Feels bad that his Big Moment may have already come to pass and that he'll be consigned to comic relief for the rest of the series. Would be great if he continued to be in the spotlight as The Heart of the team as the series goes on.

[up] Nah, she still does have her fans of people who like her as the adorable little sister of the team. And she's Montgomery's favorite too which should count for something.

[up] You sure? People are so hung up on the trans thing that if someone ever came out and said she was always a girl, Pidge would probably be more hated than the Voltron Force cadets.

I hate shippers at this point. Especially yaoi shippers. For God's sake. STOP IT. It isn't doing anything but driving fans away.

Got no problem with the yaoi part. People can ship whatever they want as long as they're not acting like assholes. The problem is that a vocal minority of them are, and if they would just stop then it would be fine.

[up] This. The problem is that they often are angry in enforcing their headcanon. They tend to be the most insistent about it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend any slash shippers, I've just been getting riled by some of the more extreme ones lately. Wasn't talking about all of them, there are plenty of cool, chill slash shippers who aren't annoying.

By now I just learned to keep it moving and just hit the block or ignore buttom because engaging with those types of people are just a waste of time and they tend to drain your energy, is not worth it.

I don't really mind people shipping stuff, so long as they're being friendly about it. In the case of Voltron, I'm fine with most of the pairings. (I find ones involving Pidge a bit off-putting, but that's about it so far.)

That said, I do wish that so much of the shipping stuff wouldn't get posted to the main tag though. The other day it felt like 50% of the tag was just memes about this one AU Klance fanfic. And before that, there was the infamous Age Discourse.

I think the show itself will probably have some romance, but it won't be a huge focus.

I also agree that it'd be nice if there was more Hunk content.

What exactly is the appeal of Dirty Laundry anyway? I keep seeing people post about it, but the fic itself doesn't even seem that great.

Also, I'm seeing a lot of The Discourse flying back and forth about whether the fic is racist for referencing stuff that happens in Latino households. Some people accuse it of stereotyping, others claim it's stuff that happens in real life and it would be more racist not to include it, some say white people should never be allowed to write fanfiction about nonwhite characters in the first place, while also siimultaneously complaining that not enough content is being made for nonwhite characters, and so on. It's a horrible wankmess.

A lot of people seem to have a real lack of understanding about what trans is. A person dressing as the opposite gender does not in and of itself make them trans. Pidge was born a girl, identifies as a girl, and was masquerading as a guy to facilitate her search for her family. I sympathize with trans folks and trans-sympathetic folks who are hungry to see a genuinely trans person in a cartoon, but Pidge ain't it.

Remember Yellow Dancer from Robotech? He started passing himself off as a woman so he could escape capture, and then it provided him with a way to aid the resistance without attracting attention. As far as the show ever let on, he still identified as a guy, though. Same kind of thing.

As to skin tones, I remember people saying they thought Avatar's pairing Aang and Katara (and by extension anyone who supported this particular ship) was racist in that Aang had lighter skin than Katara did, and since he crushed on her first it gave the light skinned kid what he wanted. Not much you can do with that kind of thinking.

[up]Lots of people pretend to be the other gender in shows and movies and such. I don't see what makes Pidge any different, sure she's not the most traditionally feminine girl, but she still seemed to see herself as one and that's what matters. I've seen people think this with Mulan as well.

[up] The Korra fandom?

I'm starting to see why people hate Keith and Lance.

Edit - Maybe that's harsh, but fandoms have a way of negatively slanting the perception of characters sometimes and it's a shame.

They're already the two most controversial characters on the team. Hunk a little too, but most people who aren't fans of him at the beginning agree he already drops what made him annoying to them by the Balmera storyline.

Whereas Keith has been negatively compared to Asami in terms of being beloved by the fandom despite a lack of interesting traits in canon to justify it (personally I think that's a little too harsh, it's only been the first of something like six seasons and the preview confirmed he'll get some character focus), and Lance's personality is still in that love-him-or-hate-him zone (I personally like him but I can see why people don't).

It's weird that they came out the most popular characters, but a lot of shipping often involves projection and boxing characters into pre-made stereotypes, if some of the more rabid Zutara shippers are anything to go on.

I haven't even finished Avatar or watched Korra.

Is this shipping hullabaloo supposed to be how those fandoms were like?

I'm dimly aware that the Zuko/Katara shippers could get a little nuts. Like analyzing episodes with a fine-toothed comb to find anything that supported the ship.

And in Korra it got to the point where fandom ramblings had an adverse affect on my enjoying the show. Yes, we get it, this is great for LGBT representation, but your fanfic where you wrote Mako as a serial abuser is still dogshit.
