TV Tropes 1.3 Released!

Go To

Hey tropers, the day has arrived. If you were one of our Kickstarter donators last year you've probably seen us tinkering with a new design for months. Within the next couple hours (depending on how fast your DNS updates you'll start hitting our new servers with the updated version of TV Tropes). A huge thanks to those of you who have been monitoring it and giving us feedback throughout the development process. Some of the new features include:

- Updated design throughout for a cleaner browsing experience
- One click sign in with Facebook
- Random Shuffle button to stay on a namespace (hit Random Media then the Shuffle button to randomize that namespace)
- Browse Watchlist in an image view
- History page now highlights sentences that were deleted/added to make it easier to review changes
- New image uploader with built in crop function
- New About Us page so you can see who we are.
- Contact Us form
- Trope Depictions on the home page (artists can submit their own comic to go with a trope)
- Bug List page Query Bugs (and Query Wishlist for tech wishes) to organize and track bugs on the site.

Ok. Let the feedback begin. (See Anxiety Tropes for my current feelings)

Notes:
- Please do not bother asking for the old design to come back. The lease of the old servers did expire at the day of the changeover, the new ones cannot run the old design.
- You can move the sidebar to the left by going into your profile and selecting Lefthand Sidebar.

I would assume that the databases are not separate, so that we won't lose any of today's work when the servers roll over.

I've switched the stickied threads out. Can't say I have seen anything yet.

@Fighteer, I spent the weekend syncing the old database server to our new cluster and switched the old and new site to start using the cluster last night. There were no errors and if you didn't see any lost info last night then we should be in the clear.

@Septimus Heap, thanks for the sticky. I forgot to do that. The DNS was just updated so it will take 1-2 hours for most people to start hitting the new web servers.

It looks pretty cool! Though I have to admit I was taken by surprise - I was literally in the middle of editing a page in the old design, clicked save, and BOOM. Very ninja. So sneaky. Wow. [nja]

I don't like the giant amount of space on the right of the page. Turning Wide load off or on doesn't fix it. Sticky Header is a nice choice although I haven't seen how it works on mobile and I will say the Night Vision actually manages to look decentish with this new format.

It just doesn't really feel like tvtropes though. It feels like it belongs to a blog and it makes browsing tropes feel messy.

[down]. And this.

I liked it much better the way it was before.

As was true last time things got suddenly updated.

[up][up] I have a rather squareish monitor and de-centering the site kind of messed with my center of vision a bit. Like the above, Wide Load does barely anything.

Also the text on the Add Post page is really tiny ._.

On my watchlist, it doesn't say which namespace a work is in.

For instance, I'm watching most of the Them's Fightin' Herds pages, and both the Funny and WMG pages for TFH are currently right next to each other...but I can't tell them apart!

Ukokira Since: May, 2012

It also doesn't tell us which page number we're currently on in the forums. You'd have to check the url for that which can get very annoying very fast on mobile

Well, this update is hideous. I despise the grey, and having the stuff on the right side of the screen instead of left is just ugly. Is there a way to get the previous display?

[up]Also, as Ukokira says, the empty space on the right just seems like a waste.

Don't suppose you could add an option to bring the UI to the left side of the page, instead?

I would just like some more blue on the site, particularly on the dark grey headers. Other than that, the design is cool.

Hey, is that a preview post button? That's also cool.

No classic view = it sucks

Seriously, I don't like all of the stuff being on the right as opposed to the left.

Please, PLEASE put the Classic View option back >.>

This newfangled design is okay but I kind of liked the blue in the old design, now we've just got a bunch of grey and looks more boring than before.

Eh, I'll probably get used to it.

Oh, now this is pretty! I like! Tidy and well arranged, plenty of information without too much clutter.

(I figure you guys are about to get the motherlode of complaints, so I figured I'd say something positive right off the bat.)

I closed the window, did some other things, and reopened TV Tropes...and literally jumped in my seat.

It's not bad, but it was very sudden.

Well, I don't HATE it...

I think we should give it a few days, see if it grows on us. After all, we all got used to the second look.

[up][up][up][up][up] Well if you go to your profile, there is an option to align stuff to the left.

I'm okay with the new design, but some things will need to be iron out.

When I enable Wide Load, the right edge of the page goes all the way to the right edge of the screen, which means a small portion of it is behind the vertical scrollbar. It would make more sense for the right edge of the page to butt up against the scroll bar instead of going underneath it.

I dig most of the changes I've noticed. I mean the style doesn't really blow my skirt up, but I'm over complaining about aesthetic changes; nobody likes change, we've established that by now. As far as the changes to functionality, so far I like what I've seen.

Although, why did we get rid of "Classic Mode"? I really prefer having my sidebar on the left.

EDIT: Oops, nevermind, I just found it. Classic Mode is no longer called Classic Mode, it's "Lefthand Sidebar" and it's been moved to the Profile screen.

Holy wha-?!

I was editing a page and when I saved suddenly the entire websites layout looked different. I freaked out and thought something happened to me but apparently it's just a redesign... I didn't even know it was getting a redesign.

The dark version of the site isn't as dark as I like anymore but I don't see anything bad about the revamp thus far.
