Just saw it this afternoon. Felt a bit compressed at certain points compared to the book, with the first third of the book only taking up about twenty minutes or so of film time, Squad 53’s training being shown through a short montage as opposed to several chapters worth of character interaction – so I felt they’re characterization was short-changed as a result and most of their nicknames are unexplained if you haven’t read the books.
I’m also disappointed they left out Evan explaining that the aliens are made out of pure consciousness and have to be downloaded into physical bodies, and that some voted in favour of co-existing with human peacefully but were over-ruled by their governing body – rather than their entire race being Always Chaotic Evil as the film seems to present them.
Also think it’s stupid how they cast a white actress to play the character Ringer (who in the book is part Asian, and In-Universe looks Asian), although apart from that she did play the part well.
That being said I did enjoy the film, and I’ve seen worse adaptations of books.
Has anyone seen it? The reviews aren't that great.
