The Chosen One has 4400+ wicks. We are not making it exampleless. That is far more work than it's worth doing before 2.0.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIf 4,000 wicks are more appropriate for subtropes, and 400 wicks are misuse, then it still becomes exampleless. That's basically my contention.
Simply making subtropes would cause us to fix wicks.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I agree that making The Chosen One a supertrope is a good idea, and then you can have Chosen By Prophecy as a subtrope. That would fix the discrepancy.
Single prop crowner hooked.

I'm calling this since it's just a minor definition tweak and listing subtropes.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickHow's this?
Take it for granted that they are The Only One. These characters have been chosen by some force and they are now the only ones capable of resolving the plot. The methodology may be imprecise, and bonus points apply if "chosen one" is actually used in the work. The key here is that these characters are held in esteem for their expected potential, occasionally determined by past accomplishments.
That said, always be wary about what you are being chosen for. If your job description involves "defeating the darkness" and involves long years of danger and struggle, chances are good that you've been made The Hero. If, on the other hand, your job description involves getting pampered by half-naked temple virgins, then chances are very good that you've been chosen to be a sacrifice instead!
Subtropes include:
- The Chooser of the One
- Only the Chosen May Wield
- It Sucks to Be the Chosen One
- The Chosen Many.
- The Unchosen One
- The Chosen Zero.
Not to be confused with Giving the Sword to a Noob, where there is someone clearly more qualified that is able to do the job.
Not bad. Not bad at all.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThat's pretty good...might need some tweaking in spots but it's a solid foundation.
I made the obvious tweaks.

Subtropes include:

- The Chosen Wannabe
- The Chosen Zero
- The Chooser of the One
- It Sucks to Be the Chosen One
- Only the Chosen May Ride
- Only the Chosen May Wield
- The Unchosen One
Compare Giving the Sword to a Noob, where someone obtains a powerful weapon, but is not able to wield it properly.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I'd change the first sentence to "Take it for granted that the Chosen One is The Only One who can save the day" to make it a little clearer, and change the "subtropes" heading to "related tropes" as not all of them are actually subtropes. I'd probably change the bit about Human Sacrifice to something like the Antichrist instead, too — you can be The Chosen One for something bad (like causing The End of the World as We Know It), but simply being chosen to be a human sacrifice usually doesn't make you The Chosen One.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. The original definition (named by prophesy) didn't mean you'd be The Hero. The misuse has generally favoured that interpretation, but consensus was to make it a supertrope and "chosen to be offered to the gods" counts as The Chosen One. The new definition is expanded to fit the general trend of misuse. Retroactively, all the mentioned tropes are now subtropes, and I'm not sure I found all of them.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Instead of calling them subtropes I would call them "related tropes". Other than that, it sounds good.
Bumpity-bump. Can we just go ahead and implement these changes?
Description swapped. I believe consensus was that anyone who wished to trope a variant of The Chosen One (such as Chosen By Prophesy) is to use YKTTW. That would mean this thread is finished.

Crown Description:
nevermind. Malformed crowner will be deleted when tech issue is resolved.
I might be able to deliver a 50+ wick check on Saturday. My intended Wick Check would divide the wicks into "what chose them", and then we can debate if The Chosen One will be exampleless or not? I think I need good evidence before I make that argument.
