[up] the command is [[ quoteblock ]] and [[ /quoteblock ]]

If Xena is openly gay in the new show, it strikes me as choosing a side and telling a subset of the fandom that "you were wrong, we were right."

And keeping it ambiguous is saying "the other side is right" because we live in a world where hetero is the default

A character who is not outright stated to be queer is automatically assumed to be straight. Bisexual Erasure is equally a thing.

Ah, many thanks. I've been a registered user for a while but have never really been on the forums.

Right, because everyone assumed that Xena was straight in the original series? Come on, that's ridiculous.

Also, I'm sure you've already assumed that I'm a straight male, and you'd be correct. Just so you know, I'm a fan of the Xena/Callisto pairing. But if you want to accuse me of homophobia, and I know you're dying to, go right ahead.

I have not assumed anything, I was just curious. And even if it was ambiguous, my point is that "straight" is the standard. The basis zero.

I mean, its called Ambiguously Bi not Ambiguously Hetero in regards to her thing with Ares, is it?

And I am not accusing you of homophobia, so please don't try to straw man me. I am merely thinking you are a bit self-centered in how you react, because your argument seems to be that your fun gets diminished while diminishing another part of the fandom who has an arguably bigger stake than sheer amusement.

I also think you are conflating "gay" with "lesbian" while it can just as much mean bisexual.

I apologize for getting defensive, it just seemed like you were baiting me by asking me what my orientation was. I need to take a deep breath... whew, okay, I'm good.

Okay, there is so much wrong with this. I've loved Xena for many years, it's not just one of my favorite shows it is a part of my identity. Xena, Gabrielle and Joxer are like close friends. I have a very big stake in the franchise, and I don't appreciate the implication that my opinions are somehow less valid or important simply because I am heterosexual. Forgive me if that isn't what you meant.

The show is extremely important to me. In general, I'm opposed to reboots because it shows a lack of original ideas, and they rarely turn out well. I don't want to see it happen to Xena

But if they explicitly call her bisexual, won't that appease both sides? Or would it appease nobody?

Also, posting this video because everyone should see it:

I definitely think the smart move is to make her bisexual. In the original show she had relationships with both men and women, even if the latter was always ambiguous (the female slave she had during her Warlord days, or the woman who taught her how to use pressure points, etc)

It would show fans that they respect the old Xena, while still moving in a new direction

But even keeping that ambiguous that she's Bi is a bad thing because Bisexual erasure is a thing. See No Bisexuals. Keeping the same-sex attraction ambiguous while showing different-sex is skimming that toward the latter, while the "both" gets at best treated as "flip-flopping".

If Xena is bi, she should be portrayed and acknowledged as such. And I point out, by some people's understanding/definition "gay" covers the entire LBGT spectrum, including bisexual.

Yeah, that's why I think it shouldn't be ambiguous.

That's fine, I'm okay with them explicitly acknowledging her as bisexual. I was worried before partly because I was under the impression that they would make her 100% lesbian. Also, since I love the old show so much, my gut reaction is They Changed It, Now It Sucks!. Until I see it for myself, I will continue to be skeptical.

Interesting Sami Raimi is directing since I understand he basically had no creative involvement with Xena or Hercules.

All I know is it isn't Xena. If it's not Lucy Lawless, it's not goddamn Xena. It's some other woman sharing the name, but not Xena.

Only wow worthy thing I saw in that article was that the main reason they didn't make Xabrielle official was because of Ares. And it's not really THAT wow worthy. A silly reason, for sure. They could have had both and not been that bad. At least, now they could. I'm sure back then it would have caused trouble.

I wonder: aside from the hair color and the pantheon shift, how different would a Xena series be to a Red Sonja one?
