Probably capitalizing on Chris Hemsworth's popularity and how the Huntsman is a more interesting character.
The original also managed to hit some sort of mystery blockbuster sweet-spot and was actually incredibly successful, so the studio most certainly wanted more in some form or other.

Fairy tales were dark and grim in substance, the new movies are just gratuitously dark and grim in appearance.

The Grimm version is actually a fairly recent retelling, published in 1812. The Perrault version of the story is older, written in 1697, and is the one that the Disney Cinderella films are based on. So it isn't true that the darker version is the original. Perrault's is only sixty years younger than the earliest European telling, and it added the light elements of the fairy godmother and pumpkin coach and glass slippers.

Is it wrong I was kinda rooting for Evil Queen Charlize Theron in the last movie? I mean, aside from Evil Is Cool, she was owning Snow in that final battle and standing in that fire was just awesome!

Personally I hope that the director tells her "Please stop overacting." She was really threatening except when she RANDOMLY STARTED SCREAMING.
I'd be happier if writers would put in the effort to make their Darker and Edgier retellings interesting instead of just slapping a darker coat of paint onto it. Like Napoleon said, the original fairytales were dark in substance, most of these retellings are pretty shallow and bland in their darkness imo.
Anyhoo, I'm one of those people who's wondering why this needed a sequel, but then again, my biggest problem with the first one was that Snow White was a really boring protagonist, so this may be better for her absence.
I actually really loved Kristen Stewart as Snow White. I thought that she was great in that movie.
But yeah, this movie is a prequel, right? How does that work?
From the synopsis it almost sounds like it's a prequel and sequel, lord knows how they're going to work that without Kristen around. They could resort to time-skips and montages, I guess.
Also I agree that Kristen was nowhere near as bad as she was made out to be and that Charlize's hamminess was approaching "No wire-hangers" levels, I appreciate a good ham as much as anyone but it got a wee bit ridiculous.

The Huntsman's Distaff Counterpart is called the Warrior instead of Huntress? Okay... If they were going with gender-neutral terms he should have been called the Hunter.
How to explain Stewart's absence... Maybe this will be like the Willow sequel novels where they drop a bridge on the old cast.
