I've been playing Persona 4 and perusing the Useful Notes articles on Japanese culture. They have been extremely enlightening. But I still have questions.

Persona 4 got me thinking about the many other JRP Gs I've played and the commonalities. I was hoping some knowledgeable people could tell me more about them. I'm especially interested in what "parts" of Japanese culture these commonalities extend from. To list a few:

When meeting up with the end boss both the boss and the protagonists always give a speech. The speeches always seem to follow a common pattern:

The boss will tell the protagonists why their struggle is futile and stupid. Often at great length. Typically the speech of the boss borders on nihilism.

The protagonists will then give a speech which usually has key phrases such as "why I'm fighting" and "what's in my heart." These speeches also go on at great length.

I even saw this at the end of Final Fantasy 6 with Kefka, who was clearly nuts and didn't give a rat's ass about anything.

In Persona 4, Yumi has "issues" with her parents. No matter what dialogue choices I made with her she ends up basically siding with her father. She does this even though she has good reason not to give a shit about him.

I've noticed this in other JRP Gs as well. Even if a character's parents are absent or abusive the characters will still stick up for the parents.

I've also noticed that word "will" comes up a lot. Will as in "willpower." That word was rampant in the Xenosaga games. And I've seen it come up in a lot of other JRP Gs.

My assumption is that the word "will" is a translation of a much more complex concept in Japan. In RP Gs I usually see the word used in such a way as: "It was his/her own will" or "What is your will?". Perhaps I'm reading too much into one word but I've seen it across so many games from different developers and translators.

I've got more questions but this post is too long already. I'd appreciate anyone who could shed light on these things for me. Thanks!

I believe some of these tropes you speak of are also in other countries' work, if not more universal. Just look at the examples.

For example: the boss' speech is Break Them by Talking, Motive Rant. The heroes' speech can be Shut Up, Hannibal! or "World of Cardboard" Speech.

While Asians are generally closer to their parents than "Westerners", the example of hers is Thicker Than Water.

Even though Heroic Resolve is mostly universal, I've got nothing on how more complex Will is in Japanese culture, though. So I'll just guess.

Translations of willpower (c/o Google translate)

気力 - energy, spirit, vigor, vitality, willpower, verve
根性 - guts, spirit, nature, willpower, temper
意地 - obstinacy, willpower, disposition, spirit, backbone, appetite
意力 - will, willpower
念力 - willpower, faith

So there's three things I see here aside from simply having GUTS. There's religious faith, and there's Ki (the first character of the first one).

There's a trope about this? That is awesome, thanks!
