Far cry is a 20 dollar game to me. At best. Still waiting for 4 to drop to 10.

Highlights:

  • There's two types of mammoths, the regular ones you can tame and the Elder Mammoth which is bigger, nastier, and untamable.
  • Cave lions confirmed for tamability.
  • You can't tame deer.
  • Badgers are tamable. (I have no idea why they insist on calling it a honey badger when it's obviously a European badger.)
  • You can customize your tribal tattoos.

I found the section where they mention how they came up with Wenja interesting.

Really, it's not a honey badger, they're just calling it that despite it having the model of European badger? Which look almost nothing alike? Laaame.

I'd say that the whole "honey badger" thing in the vid is just due to our showcasing friend demonstrating You Fail Biology Forever. The devs usually do their biology homework when Far Cry is involved, and probably won't screw things up in the game proper, memes or not.

Also, cave lions? Seldom-Seen Species, everyone. I've never seen cave lions involved in any work of fiction that's not a documentary. It's kind of sad, being nearly completely forgotten in media just because another feline of the same time period happened to have massive choppers and became more iconic because of that.

The descriptions of the Udam seem to suggest that they're early modern humans like the Cro-Magnons.

For those who want a good look at the gameplay take a peek around youtube with various lets plays and general gameplay vids of those with early access copies. I am liking the way it is looking from the various videos. The gameplay looks a lot better then I thought it would be as well.

He does a lot of commercials up here in canuckland, nice to see him in video games again.

Gotta say I'm not really liking the direction of this from what little story content I've seen. I figured they were going the fun and zany route (TAKE DRUGS KILL A BEAR) but it seems like they're playing it completely straight. I'd also really dig if there was some small Assassin's creed easter egg like the abstergo logo on some documents in 3.

So i caved and bought this.

It is a blast.

It is sort of like Far Cry 4 in several of the elements and some of the gameplay features but they changed a lot as well. You still do the pick everything useful up routine and hunt and skin animals and crafting junk.

You start noticing the big differences in your weapons. You get the take downs based on what melee weapon you have and so far all of the melee weapons I have acquired can be thrown and/or set on fire. Each weapon feels like it fits where it is so far. The bow is a good large capacity longer ranged weapon and feels like the baseline far cry bow we know from the previous game. At the start it takes one head shot or two body shots to kill. The club feels beefy and meaty when you smack down enemies or do a take down. The club even has a power attack which is useful. The spear is weaker at melee but a nasty short ranged projectile killer. The club as thrown weapon appears to be to stagger or stun a target which I found useful to stun one of two charging attackers and then power attack bash his friends head in while he was recovering. A quickly tossed spear to the chest or face works just as well.

The hunter vision is sort of like the Detective Vision from the Batman Arkham series only it doesn't stay active and switches off after a bit. It highlights the expected enemies, animals, things of interest, and harvestables. You get the owl very early on like shrotly after the first mission. The little critter is pretty awesome. It is like a drone that can mark enemies and fly around. I haven't unlocked the fun stuff like dropping some throwable weapons yet but just the hunter vision and "owl drone" is pretty handy.

Enemies will hurt you quickly on normal and the animals will fuck you up badly if you are not careful. I hate Jaguars especially because of how hard they are to fight. Wolves are easy as long as there is only one or two. There are crocodile like critters so be careful where you leap into the water.

You have to craft your stuff from your weapons menu for ammo and replacements upgrades are through the select menu. You can choose what level of heal your quick heal is. The one health bar, two health bar, or three health bar option so far.

Of course there are downsides...the fucking eagles. God damn it I hate those damn things. Also fuck the Wooly Rhinos hyper aggro asshats. Cave bears are a stone cold bitch to take on early on. I dropped one with pack of Winja i was with for a mission that came out of nowhere to interupt the Udam/Wenja murder fest.

I already had WTF is going on crazy moment. I went to do an event quest and found the quest giver running around like crazy dodging a pair of Dhole trying to eat him. I nail one with a spear and then spend the next 3 minutes chasing the other Dhole chasing the dude. Then out of the blue a Udam shows up who then gets mauled by a wolf that shows up, who gets killed by a platoon sized group of Udam who suddenly show, who are then eventually killed by me with a few narrow misses.

At least this time your characters near guaranteed loyalty isn't utterly stupid because the guys immediately on your side are from your tribe.

The environment looks great. Plant life everywhere abundance of wild critters which is a mixed blessing, and the only roads are foot paths or animal trails. The closest you get to structures are the expected camps, villagers, and fort like structures. Everything seems to fit the theme pretty well.

The map looks bloody huge which is also a downside because you will be doing a lot of travel on foot.

Forgot hunting. Outside of heart and head shots anything that isn't high damage causes the animal to run and leave a blood trail. They now bleed out and you can track them by blood trail. It doesn't seem to hold true for predators that I have noticed outside of Jaguars but that could be because they are a lot more agressive.

Got it, it's fun.

I do have 2 observations

  • I am not sure of the decisions to have the characters (At least your tribe) all speak gibberish and rely on subtitles. Like, sure, cavement didn't speak english... but they didn't regenerate by eating meat or see subtitles either. I feel it breaks the immersion to have to be looking at the bottom of the screen rather than pay attention to the characters. It's a shame, coz they are fun. And voice actors can give a better performance when not speaking gibberish.
    • Also, why are the subtitles in broken English? I mean, we're accepting Translation Convention here, there's no reason for them to go "You is Wounded". That makes 0 sense.
  • The melee combat REALLY needs a parry or a dodge. If you're going to make a game built around melee combat... include those.
  • I do like how animals you shoot with arrows die of their wounds after a while, though you may lose trace of them. Makes up for the slower firing weapons.

It's pretty fun and atmospheric otherwise

You can track wounded animals by their blood trail in hunter vision. As long as they don't get too far away you should be able to find where they fall. If your weapons are not powerful enough some animals might not bleed out and instead be running around with say an arrow stuck in them. Like Jaguars and Leopards.

A block or a dodge would be nice in general. So far though I have done pretty good without them.

You will eventually get a sling which is rather amusing to use.

Or it is supposed to be an example of a language that doesn't directly translate into modern English complete with whole sentence structures. Which is not uncommon for the oldest languages.

That makes no sense.

Most modern languages don't directly translate into others. French has over double the tenses than English does, yet the English version of Les Miserables isn't filled with "I is starving". And those are languages that share 30% of their words. If we can make coherent translations from Chinese and Japanese to english despite them operating in completely different structures, I think the made up language written by English speakers and spoken by English voice actors can be coherently written in English.

I'm more tickled about the game being FULL PRICE when it's the same kind of gaiden game for Far Cry 4 that Blood Dragon was for Far Cry 3, and that had the decency to be a budget title.

I am not so pissed. It has much more content that Blood dragon, which was just a very short story and reused a lot of assets from Far Cry 3, most of it is the same game under a color filter.

While Primal DOES re-use a lot of assets too, there's a lot more original content, and honestly a lot more effort put into it. So the comparison between primal and blood dragon isn't accurate

Now, I haven't finished the game, I can't speak to its length, but its definitely worth more than Blood Dragon.

Yeah, the $60 price tag is worth it. There's a ton of differences between this one and the previous games, it's just that the core mechanics are more or less the same (ex. collect plants, skins, items etc for crafting, an open-world map, outpost and stronghold liberations, sidequests, leveling up to gain new skills, etc).

Cobra: Yes it does make sense given it happens all the time in real life. There are a lot of well known problems with holes in translation that leave the sentence sounding odd with unrelated languages all the time and more often then not leading to incorrect substitutions if any can be made. More then a few languages do not really translate very well one way or both ways. That is why you get odd ball direct translations all over the place and websites like engrish.com exist to begin with.
