All of us want to be one? Do we all really?
And, by definition, tropes do not exist in real life. Trends, sure, but tropes, no. If someone thinks something IRL is a trope, they are mentally building a narrative around it that is far more neat and tidy than real life actually is.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.TIL we are all supposed to become Magnificent Bastards.
Não.

Ohh, so you can read our minds all of a sudden.
I like to keep my audience riveted. To be fair, it's the entire reason for their appeal.
The nearest you can expect to be to a Magnificent Bastard is a prankster/troll. Like when I made someone believe that humanism is named after David Hume.
Quick guideline: it may be playing it safe, but it works best when used against equals in villainy. I've noticed this in many role-playing games, but especially Fallout: New Vegas: any small-time villager struggling to make ends I meet I could not bear to hurt, but with the rulers and bosses I deceived, tricked and backstabbed and loved it all the way.
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.I don't think everyone wants to be a Magnificent Bastard per say, but I do think a lot of people would like to be more assertive, proactive, and competent at what they do.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. To be in control of my environment? To be a resourceful, inspiring and nigh-invincible leader? Indeed, I want that.
The 'bastard' part, though? Perhaps not so much. I'd rather be a superhero by the name of Competent Man...
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'There's quite of an agressive approach round here, I see
Haw Haw HawI'd rather be a Guile Hero myself.
Also, from what I've seen if you try to become a Magnificent Bastard, more often than not you end up as a Obviously Evil Manipulative Bastard. (Yes, sadly there actually are real people who try to be Magnificent Bastard in real life)
But if you really want to be seen as a Magnificent Bastard, you have to not desire to be seen as such. Caring about the opinions of others is something pawns do. :P

And that's it...
I find the Magnificent Bastard trope is hard to pull IRL because events in meatspace are, by definition, way more random and unpredictable...
But there are people who is legitimate a MB, and, frankly, we all want to be a MB, so, what are your impressions about this?
