This◊, I think, is the suggestion...I don't see an improvement.
The current is at least something vaguely scary-looking.
That said, when I hear the words "Nightmare Fuel" and "Sonic", I hear this.
Check out my fanfiction! Also seems like a lateral change at best to me, so I'll go with Keep Until Better Image Suggested.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Use the drown music with this ◊
Mileena Madness^ Again, that strikes me as a lateral change.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Not seeing anything scary there, myself.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat picture doesn't have the context that the narrative provides that makes the scene Nightmare Fuel. The Context (Sonic Adventure 2 Spoilers)

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? What about this one of Dark Gaia?

That one could definitely work.
"That is hard to argue or agree with." ~PennyHere's a good link◊ to 10. It's an improvement over the current, so from me.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"I concur. for 10.
I hate to say it, but I think the Spinball boss is more nightmare-inducing than Dark Gaia ever was.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Thanks, it's hooked.
Friday votes bump; two in the green, one in consensus range.
I'm still not really understanding why Dark Gaia is so high. He's a little unsettling at best.
Moon◊I've never played any Sonic game but it's probably because he looks like a dragon. From an outsider perspective's, he's the only thing remotely scary in this thread.

Same here. Every other suggestion is strongly dependent on context.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"Thing is, it's a trope they'd hammered so far into the ground by that point that they were on the verge of pulling up lava. Perfect Chaos◊, Biolizard/Finalhazard◊, Metal Madness/Overlord◊, Devil Doom, Iblis◊/Mephiles/Solaris◊... so overused that this sort of thing was expected and routine, bordering on Nightmare Retardant. Dark Gaia'd lost all impact he could've had before he even showed up to the party.
Personally, the only boss that kinda creeped me out in the series was Robo-Boiler◊ from Spinball; made the same disturbing screeches Scorpius did, but now it was a bunch of deformed disembodied heads constantly vomiting lava onto you.
Moon◊It's the same problem we had when choosing an image for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, no matter how scary the soundtrack, backstory, or even if it is the big climax of the game; if you can't show it in a clear image it won't work.
By the way, you should add some of those monsters to the crowner.
Probably not a bad idea, although I've slept on it a bit of a long time. Guess I'll do it anyway, although at this point I'm a little less annoyed with Dark Gaia if we just want to run with it (although it's now at a 2:1 ratio...).
Moon◊The old crowner was open for two weeks and the two leading options were pretty much neck and neck, so I've hooked a runoff between them.
