First episode aired early this morning. Still waiting on subs but so far I can say that it is pretty okay. It wasn't as engaging as Evol's hour long premiere but I have hopes that it will pick up soon. Your thoughts?

Are you sure it wasn't a double episode? I'm seeing an Episode 00 and an episode 01 from one of the raw providers at the usual place.

It was the Evol/Genesis crossover OVA, and then episode 1 of Logos.

Yeah? I watched episode one live and they aired the crossover OVA before that. So unless the streamer just chose not to show episode two there was only one episode.

This started out pretty good, I dare say I'm optomistic about it. But Evol started out good too and it ended on a note that made me want to fly to Japan to punch the director for it, so I'm wary. I've seen too many mecha animes that ran themselves into the ground lately.

Akira is so over the top badass and confident in himself it's almost funny, almost certainly because Amata was so unpopular with his softspoken wimpish attitude and putting himself down, and they're over compensating so he's the most popular male. Likewise his rival, Maia's copilot comes off as the wimpy one, no doubt because Kagura ended up being so popular and they don't want him to overshadow Akira this time.

Now I have no idea how the timeline to this is supposed to work, because they're in what seems to be modern Japan, even though Japan as a nationality seemed to have ceased in Evol, and they're back to using modern writing, as opposed to Evol's rune like alphabet.

But everything will probably be explained, for better or worse later on down the line.

I watched the first episode, and given the lack of any apparent connection to Genesis and Evol, this felt like the first time I watched Digimon Tamers. They take elements from the former series and create a whole new setting.

Maybe from now on this franchise will be the same as Sentai and Digimon? Bringing new a series after another and bothering less with continuity with which one?

Subs are out. Akira is kind of amazing.

I'm.. not quite sure what to make of that.

It's Aquarion on drugs, I guess. Strong ones - the kind that are worse than the disease.

I started absolutely loving it around the scene with the motorcycle. But then a forced Gattai happened, without any apparent awareness of what the subtext on that would be so that left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

That was a bit weird though, technically, the first union in every series so far has been forced. Its just this one had especially rapey overtones to it.

Akira DOES come off as less of a savior and more of a conqueror.

The unions are less sexual in Logos, so it really doesn't seem that rapey.

In any case two eps in and this seems like it could be something interesting (but Evol did do so I could be dead wrong) but it looks like nobody's really talking about this or caring about it. The damage is done from Evol, and thats kind of sad.

I have been wondering, how popular was Genesis compared to Evol? I never heard of the original series until after I found Evol. Although I think Evol really shouldn't be called a sequel to Genesis, it does far too much damage to the original series.

Genesis itself wasn't that popular, but it's theme song was, so it was mostly known for that. It was also popular enough to get that OVA.

It's popularity also got a boost when it was in Super Robot Wars Z about 4 years after the anime ended. It was that boost that got people interested again and eventually led to Evol.

It also wasn't released in the US until 2009 several years later, for some reason.

Honestly, the most I can really say about Logos right now is that...it doesn't really feel that much like Aquarion to me. It doesn't have that spirit that Genesis and Evol did. Because no matter what those 2 did, I could never really say that they weren't fun. With this one, I don't think I can say that.

I can't say for sure, but maybe others are having a similar issue here.

I feels plenty fun to me. Akira kind of gets a smile out of me with every line.

I mean, it's true that it doesn't really have much of anything to do with the other Aquarion series, but tone appears to be one of the few things they are trying to preserve.

Though there is something I can't quite put my finger on that Logos seems to lack... serious undertones? A sense of mystery? Something like that, anyway.

Something is off about it, but I also can't tell what.

I mean alot is different. It's set in a modern looking setting instead of futuristic, the character design is different, the music is different (and isn't playing during battles) even the Aquarion's are significantly different (no orgasm combination, they end up standing in a single cockpit instead of still in the vectors and it's controlled with the kanji thing) which makes sense since this wasn't made from Solar Aquarion.

I'm into it, but I feel like I'm watching it for all the wrong reasons. I'm most here because Akira's Savior lines and over the topness is amusing, to see if Maia is Zessica and will be treated better this time, to see if Maia's friend will end up as entertaining as Bizon from Buddy Complex and because I think I already figured out the plotwist and want to see if I'm right. But I really don't care at all about the kanji and kanji monsters thing.

I don't think Maia is anything like Zessica. Zessica was just the Fanservice girl who ended up on the wrong end of a stupid and melodramatic Love Triangle. Here in the second episode alone Maia is already given a solid backstory and some meaningful character development besides her inevitable romance with Akira. I can see a Love Triangle in the future, but I think this time the shy miko girl will be the loser.

And yeah, until now I like Akira. He's much more amusing and cooler than Amata.

Maia may not seem like Zessica personality wise but she totally looks like Zessica possed by Mykage albeit the end of her hair is a different color.

One of the big differences with Logos is sound design - it's much sparser here than in previous Aquarions, which were always generous with the music. I think there's a pretty substantial staff change from the other aquarions, and that shows up strongly as well. Not having seen a non-funimation sub or encode I can't really say anything about the overall visual quality, but there's a few areas where they're saving money in comparison to previous iterations.

The show does feel pretty similar to Genesis in more ways than one - I get the impression that this was made not because there was any particular demand for it, but rather because somebody on the production side had something else they wanted to do (test new animation, train a director, whatever) and picked this as a "throw-away" property.

[up]

That's what I noticed too. Visually, she hits the same notes (slutty casual wear / Ms. Fanservice, short hair) and the same general role in her love triangle (feisty vs. passive).

It was made because Aquarion themed pachinko machines make alot of money apparently.

Well, it's already been stated that Logos takes place in another universe entirely... which makes sense, seeing as EVOL ended pretty conclusively. And the love triangle I'm seeing is actually inverted, with two guys fighting over the girl.

I'm also wondering why the hell Logos doesn't have a trope page yet, considering both the original and EVOL do.

The way this works is someone has to start the page first, then people just filled it in. Usually it's by a regular actually following the series.

To give you an idea, I had to do this for THREE pages over the past few days: Castle Town Dandelion, Wakaba Girl, and Itoshi No Karin.

It's safe to say that we've got a love quadrilateral again this time, with our hero and the two heroines (Maia and Miss-sutters-a-lot) and Maia's co-worker.

Well Logos being an AU doesn't quite keep it as seperate from Genesis/Evol as that usually entails because

There's only 7 universes.

They all share a common connection point with the original shadow angel war and the book of genesis, which is apparantly in every universe and records info from all of them.

People can originate in one universe and reincarnate in another (see Shin and Yuno)

As of now Logos seems to be doing it's own thing, but I'm almost positive they'll be a throwback to Genesis or Evol, or both at some point.
