Misused: The Idiot From Osaka

I noticed that there is some confusion as to the difference between the way these two tropes are used. Unless there is something I'm missing, Kansai Regional Accent is a general discussion and possible listing of characters who speak with this dialect, no matter what their personalities are. The Idiot from Osaka, on the other hand, seems to be referring to characters from Osaka who have a specific personality type. Meaning that The Idiot from Osaka is being used as a subtrope of the former.

What is confusing is that on some trope and work pages, characters are listed as The Idiot from Osaka simply because of where they're from or how they speak, even if they don't fit the personality associated with the stereotype. One example I can think of is Mutsumi from Puni Puni Poemi, who happens to speak with an Osakan accent for no reason (and she outright questions why she has an accent that her sisters don't have) and she seems to be more of an aloof Deadpan Snarker rather than fitting the personality type associated with The Idiot from Osaka.

Is this a case of misuse or is there something I'm misunderstanding about the difference between how the two related tropes should be used?

Also, looking through the examples on the trope page itself as well as the description, it's unclear whether or not the trope refers to Osakan characters being unintelligent (taking the trope name literally), Osakan characters having a specific personality type regardless of intelligence level, or specifically a combination of the two (as in, to fit the trope they have to be both stupid AND loud, not one or the other).

Sounds like we should merge with Kansai Regional Dialect and cut any example that doesn't use the accent.

No, no. TIFO is a very specific Japanese character type, but it exists. Seen It A Million Times. For example, Toji from Eva speaks in Kansai dlalect, and is TIFO. He's friends with two other guys that are called the Three Stooges, for crying out loud. So he's an example.

That's cleanup material, not TRS. But I can see what I can do as the crappy examples go.

"cleanup" means less than 10% misuse is present. When 10% correct use is present, TRS is mandatory (wick check not actually performed, page is probably somewhere between the two)

Yeah no on a merge, that is like calling every person with a southern accent a redneck hick from some southern city.

It's one thing to have an accent, one that a westerner usually will not identify. Then there is the stereotype of those from the main city in the area, one which has a lot of truth behind it.

You got the merge direction backwards. The smaller trope (redneck hick from a southern city) is being merged into the larger trope (southern accent) because "is from Georgia" is being used as complete context for the smaller trope. Examples where the character is intelligent or cultured (instead of a hick) is treated as a straight example. That's misuse.

Kansai Regional Accent and Tohoku Regional Accent exist because we as western viewers do not get that accent at all. They are actually more of a useful notes type thing like American Accents is they were not so important and meaningful to characters in works and so Lost in Translation or attempts to write it into the work itself or Translation Notes ala Azumanga Daioh, which does both.

The pages need to exist on their own.

Idiot From Osaka just needs more emphasis on the "fun loving, impatient, loud, boisterous personality from Osaka" stereotype itself and not just anyone from the Kansai Region.

Much of both pages could go into an analysis page with it but they are really tropes because Tokyo Is the Center of the Universe is literal in Japan. Any anime or national broadcast is in Kanto-ben, its enforced way more there than anywhere in the west, if someone shows up speaking Kansai-ben it is very meaningful.

Tohoku-ben especially. They are basically speaking like a hick from the country with lots of slurring of their "U" and "I" sounds so they sound the same and is so different from the rest of the country that its subtitled on national media. And when works like Aikatsu visit there some 'this means this' translation has to come up for the characters visiting there.

Kansai-ben = harsh, rushed and direct form of speech also far more casual and have a tendency to skip words.

They are very much a trope in of itself.
