Edit History for Forum Posts?

Pages, YKKTW, and Crowners have an Edit History. How hard would it be to implement such for individual posts?

It'd be nice to be able to see what changes people, mods, and/or bots have made beyond a generic "edited at X time" comment. A list of the number of times edited would even be an improvement on the current system. Heck, I can't believe that the "troll post crusher" is still leaving empty posts as of 2015. Can one moderator learn what the original post contained if another deems it a Troll Post? Either way, the rest of us certainly cannot. Comment systems on other sites will at least hide contents deemed disruptive, with a message like "This comment has been hidden as disruptive, click to view" as an alternative to Orwellian Editing.

Against. Regular users edit posts to edit out things they've thought better of saying. Mods edit posts to get rid of inflammatory material. An edit history would defeat this

An edit history that's viewable only by yourself and mods would be fine, I suppose. But it would have a very large storage cost.

The whole point of the Troll Post Crusher is to eliminate the offending posts from view. Making them visible with a history defeats that purpose. The mods can see who made the post and what it said, no matter which one applied it. The general posting population has no reason to see what it used to say except morbid curiosity.

Unlocking this in case it may be worth rediscussing as a sort of accountability feature.

If we were to do this, I'd prefer to keep the history private to the user and maybe mods. I've made stupid and/or rude posts that I've blanked, and letting everyone see what it looked like before defeats the purpose of blanking (especially since we can't delete posts).

Against. The implementation cost would be very high. The number of circumstances where it is useful would be very low.

Who are you watching? Rude users who hide behind edits? Or mods who delete appropriate material? Not usually a problem in either case. Destruction of evidence of another crime is the only thing that may be a concern here.

The moderator only version has been proposed in a private Query Wishlist report, the public one does not seem to be a good idea. So closing per what is said here.
