I can confirm that the fans are collectively calling the new Doom "Doom 4", even though Bethesda isn't.

However, Tomb Raider (2013) is called Tomb Raider (2013).

Fans don't really call that Tomb Raider 10, though, hence the year being appended to it to differentiate.

We do not use fan names as part of a work's official title.

[up]That probably means that MK9's main title should be Mortal Kombat 2011, though.

Examples of policy violation are not evidence of a different policy. We do not use a Fan Nickname for the work page. How to Create a Work's Page does not encourage using any name other than the official English work title. Similarly Named Works informs people that we disambiguate between works with the same name, we don't invent new names.

I still think Doom 4 is a better name than some Doom 2016 name literally nobody uses.

(Personally I'd rather companies stop naming sequels the exact same thing as the first title in a series so we could avoid this issue altogether, but the entertainment industry is stupid, so Recycled Name is a thing)

Also, How to Create a Work Page doesn't state anything on naming standards. Nor does Similarly Named Works or Fan Nickname. I'm not convinced this naming standard exists. And we're not "inventing" a name like you seem to think, that's what the game's been called for the past five years or so.

The name we would use would not be Doom 2016. It would be Doom (2016). It's the same exact format we use for every single other duplication of work titles. It's not a new thing. It's not even all that different than how a lot of other media sites do it. Disambiguating media by the year it was released is standard practice. We are not going to call it by some weird unofficial fan nickname just because you think it sounds better.

Fine. I still don't like it and would rather use what everywhere else calls it, but I can see this isn't a battle I'll win.

Although that probably should be on that Administrivia page, then. I'll see about making a note on it on there.

(As long as I'm complaining about naming policies on this site, it's been bothering me for a fair while how we went from using the namespace to differentiate the first entry of a series from its overall franchise to tacking "1"s onto everything where none existed. It seems at odds with this other policy - we can't add a 4 to a later entry, but we have to add a 1 to the first?)

(...is there a better place to talk about this than further derailing this thread? I'll bet there is. Wiki Talk or something?)

[up] Yeah, let's take it to wiki talk.

For the record, Wikipedia calls it Doom (2016 video game), as do a large number of other places. Including games media.

Brackets would be a custom name thing, right? I don't recall being able to stick brackets in the pagename url.

I'm for uniformity, whatever it would be. E.g. if we decide that all examples follow the Doom (2016) route, there should be no "Mortal Kombat 9" or "Final Fantasy 1".

I think Final Fantasy I is alright due to being the first on the series, and it follows a policy we have for franchises/game series that shares its name with the first installment.

Also, unlike the others, it actually has been released as Final Fantasy I several times. Mostly when it's been released in collections, but it's still been officially titled that so it's in a slightly different class than most cases.

Since there's now a Doom page that lists all the works associated with the game and further splitting of work pages is a free action, is there anything more for this thread to do?

Is wick repair needed?

I mean, I had been working on putting everything on the page into separate folders, but somebody just up and made a Doom 3 page irrespective of this thread, so I guess that was a waste of my time.

Not like they could've known, seeing as I hadn't said anything, mind you, but...

Wick repair presumably, but this thread goes under the New Year Purge.
