It could mean that a person fighting an enemy alone in the original material teams up with someone in the adaptation.
Examples?
Like in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, Ragna only fights Mu-12 by himself, but in BlazBlue: Alter Memory, he teams up with Jin against her.
High School DXD has Rias coming to Issei's rescue from Dohnaseek alone in Volume 1, but in the first episode of the anime, she's been accompanied by Akeno and Koneko to the rescue.
