BUGS BUGS BUGS in the Code Updates

Go To

NOTE - Report bugs along with your browser/version, operating system/version, and device. There are thousands of these combinations, and most bugs right now only affect certain combinations.

Tropers - As you are probably well aware by now, we've made a ton of changes to TV Tropes. Although most of the changes you see are primarily cosmetic, we are also part way through a complete overhaul of the backend code. With so many changes under the hood, it is entirely possible we broke a few things. If you find something that does not appear to be working correctly, this is the place to report it.

Please note, this thread is for BUGS only! If you have an idea, wish, or anything to say that is not related to a bug, please do not post it here. Those things can all be posted and discussed on other threads in Wiki Talk or the Tech Wishlist.

The more information you can provide about the bug (e.g., browser, operating system, etc.) and how to re-create it, the more likely we will be able to squash it.

Happy Troping!

EDIT: Here are some things that have been reported:

  • Login issues
    • Logins not sticking between devices
    • Some people are still having issues with dropped logins.
    • You can't log in if your username contains a space. Remove the space.
  • Javascript: Your device must be able to run Javascript from tvtropes.org, static.tvtropes.org, ajax.googleapis.com, and netdna.bootstrapcdn.com. If you are blocking any of these, lots of things won't work, like editing pages.

All I know is that the site was down for a few minutes, and then it came back up again. It seems that it's fixed... for now.

Database server issue apparently, per admin communication.

...WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST GO THROUGH.

So. I'm on my computer, right? Vista, Chrome, stuff.

I'm on the forum; I'm suddenly logged out of the site.
I hit Login and put my stuff in. Doesn't work.
I hit Reset Password, putting in the email address I happen to know is on file for my account. Doesn't work.
I make a new account, with the same name, password and email it had before, and it works, and sends me a confirmation email.
I confirm, it takes me back to the Login page, and I try again and confirm again.
It works. And now I'm logged in again, and seem to have my avatar and watchlist and junk.

That was the single trippiest thing I have ever seen this site do, beating April Troll's and that one Halloween where avatars changed when you scrolled past them.

...And it turns out that I'm overreacting to something that was a thing for less total time than the time it took me to type this rant.

Not only was I logged out, but I lost all the pages. I was in the middle of an edit, but when I checked the preview page, all the blue links were red. "Odd, but probably just a glitch," I thought. After I posted, the page was gone! Even the home page was dead and blank for me. The login issue wasn't noticed until after.

I'm just happy that everything is back... sans my edit that apparently didn't go through.

So I'm not the only one this has been happening to? That's a relief! But what's causing the problem and how can it be fixed?

What's news to me is that you have to be logged in to see someone's avatar gallery. :/

Seems like the database issue is still being worked on, as I had it disappear and come back on me a couple times so far this morning/afternoon.

We are working on the site issues - it has something to do with our database sever locking up. No updates are being pushed so we aren't exactly sure what is causing the random crashes. But we should have it resolved very soon.

I haven't experienced any downtime here before. Still, the only issue I'm experiencing is the lack of a scrollbar in editing.

When I send a PM, it isn't showing it in the Viewed PM's page, so I don't know if it's sending. :/

*whew* At least I can post.

I've been trying to respond to a PM, and then tried hitting the button from a thread page, but whenever I hit Send it just sends me wherever it would send me (back to the thread page or the Viewed Posts page) and the PM doesn't show up in my Viewed PM's page.

Well I haven't had any of those kinds of bugs that randomly log me out since then, so whatever you guys did seems to have worked for me at least

Even just trying to read a page is dead slow. As in, merely scrolling down takes whole seconds and feels like wading through mud, just as typing text into this box. Something that happens with other sites as well, and has been worsening lately, so probably has something to do with relying on widely used javascript libraries from large corporations with agendas.

This is a core 2 duo box running linux and chromium. Other machines with different hardware, OS, and browser have the same problem. They're all "not the latest" to some degree for various reasons. Do you want to shut out readers from even reading the text-and-some-pictures on offer here just because their browsers aren't updated to the very latest nightlies with video and DRM support?

I just had a very minor but very weird bug in ATT. I don't know if it'll happen here in the forum proper, but I'll try.

Basically the issue was that I could not force my handle to display with a space if it was linked. I tried various methods and they all displayed the custom title without a space. (Yes, I want my name to display in CamelCase, but I was trying to demonstrate something and was unable to force it to display with a space.)

Eventually I just gave up and typed it without a link as Solip Schism, but I should have been able to display it in a link with a space.

Edit: Good, the bug seems to be displayed in this post. I mean, not good, but good, because you can see what it's doing.

IIRC, this is normal behaviour for customized titles.

...Why? Literally all that feature does is take options away.

SolipSchism: You're wrong, it mainly adds the option to use punctuation instead of plain Wiki Words. Including on the page title itself, which would be impossible with mere potholes.

But once the appearance is fixed, it's set in stone: If the result matches the Wiki Word or its expansion, it's automatically replaced by the custom part.

No, I mean the "feature" of forcing it to display the custom title even when Pot Hole markup is used. That does nothing except take away options.

That's a quirk of the parser. When it's doing the custom title substitution, it's looking at the finished output after all wicks have been expanded. The substitution occurs in the displayed text. If the displayed text, regardless of whether it's from a straight wick or a pothole, matches the entry in the custom titles database, it makes the substitution.

Obviously this is annoying, but in the current implementation there is no way to fix it short of a complete overhaul of the parser.

Ah. Well, is there a workaround? Not that it's that important, but it would be a useful trick to know. bwburke mentioned something about "adding a space on the end" in ATT but I sent a PM asking for clarification and they haven't yet responded.

There is no workaround that I know of. I presume that your handle matches the name of a work article? If so, you're stuck with this.
