Yu-Gi-Oh In General

Found a rarity! It’s the Yu-Gi-Oh Uncut DVDs. These were made for fans who wanted the original version of the anime, but they sold very poorly so they only got through about 9 episodes. I’m pretty sure it has English audio as well–I know some 4Kids VAs were kept while others were switched around. Some of the names were a blend of English and Japanese, so Joey was named Joey Katsuya, for instance.

Yeah the dialogue feels too literally translated. Listening to it in English is awkward. Still, credit to 4kids and their VO talent for actually trying.

The DVD's didnt sell poorly, it turns out that 4Kids was cheating the involved companies out of money and thus had to stop before people started asking where did all that money went.

Wow. Fucking wow, that's real scumbag behavior.

Yeah, 4kids weren't just bad dubbers, they were kinda cruddy people as well. It's what finally brought them down.

I saw something like that on Creator Killer, lemme find it.

"In early 2011, TV Tokyo and Nippon Ad Systems (NAS) took the license away from 4Kids and sued them over a publishing deal they made with FU Nimation years earlier, driving 4Kids into bankruptcy within days. (it is worth pointing out, however, that 4Kids had been losing money for years beforehand due to a string of underperforming shows, as well as the loss of the Pokémon license.)

4Kids scored a major victory at the end of the year when the courts ruled that TV Tokyo and NAS conducted themselves improperly in their attempt to yank the license, and the parties reached a settlement a short time later (involving 4Kids being compensated to the tune of several million dollars), but the damage had been done. Not long afterwards, they sold all of their remaining licenses to Saban, with Konami obtaining the Yu-Gi-Oh rights."

WOAH Nelly! Not so fast! 4kids wasnt ALL BAD. They just had the evil and vile Alfred R Kahn as CEO. The rest of the company genuinely loved anime and were terrific people. Even if it meant editing it. They even wanted to turn their reputation around and make a mini Toonami on their Sat AM block. But then that DAMN lawsuit (Again, courtesy of Alfred R Khan) ruined everything. They did plenty of stuff to be admired, such an annual picnic for kids of firemen who risked their lives on September 11.

And this is coming from a major hater and One Piece fan, whose region STILL hasnt gotten a redub.

I did it for ya.

I saw a 4Kids One Piece DVD on hold at our library and wondered if the person requesting it knew which one it was XD I was also surprised because those are pretty rare.

The 4Kids voice actors still appear at Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments and stuff, and do annual scripted duels at big tournaments :)

I saw a video of tournament-goers asking the V As things and someone asked Wayne Grayson (who voiced Joey, Shadi, and Dartz) how annoying it was to work with 4kids. He said "It was really annoying cashing all those checks." XD

Dont forget "Kids Dont Read"! Although it pales in comparision with that one and the sexy children comment.

The main thing is that from an artistic standpoint all the editing and shit was just hella whack. I understand why they did it of course, but it's good that most companies barring Saban don't do that anymore. In this day and age, we can just watch anime subbed on the internet anyways, so I suppose it doesn't matter much either way.

My older brother used to have those uncut English Yugioh DV Ds, but I asked him just now and he says he's lost them. But I distinctly remember that they were awful. My brother knows Japanese, so he could explain it better, but I believe it did things like translate certain exclamations as "Gosh!" when a more appropriate translation would be "What?" and other weird stuff like that that made it sound super awkward.

Also, I think Mai was voiced by whoever voiced Rogue the Bat in Sonic X.

Nelvana handled Cardcaptors, though I don't remember where it aired.

Ok, but if Nelvana Murdered the show,Kids WB sold its organs in the black market.

They did a lot of Executive Meddling, They aired the episodes in the wrong order to make it seem like Shaoran was the main character. Their version of Cardcaptors was even worse than the one Nelvana did for Canada and other countries.
