What setting is we talking about? Fantasy, Science Fiction...? Also what time-period and culture are we talking about?
I reject your reality and substitute my own!!!You could name it over some important emperor or similar figure and add the suffix -ion/ius or something like that.

The Empire is a Multinational Team of races banded together against Dragonheim. Their Hat is being an all-inclusive semi-theocracy; and have approximately WW 1 level tech by way of Dungeon Punk.
Kind of like T.E.S.?

Now everyone pat me on the back and tell me how clever I am!The Pound is just screwing with you twice-over, it was decimalised in 1971.
In terms of currency names: The pound is it being metaphorically a set weight of value. Dollar is more contested but seems to be a reference to where the first coins in the region where minted: Joachimsthal (Joachim's dale), shortened to thaler. Sovereigns work well enough by the sounds of it. Also the Other Wiki's list of historical currencies.
You could always go with country=currency like French francs or Europe with the Euro. If they're a multinational thing it sounds like the European Union kinda.
You must agree, my plan is sheer elegance in its simplicity! My Tumblr(1ยง) [Whatever] (100P) Triquarter (75P) Halfie (50p) Quarter (25P) Thaler (10P) Nickel (5P) Pence (1P)

Now everyone pat me on the back and tell me how clever I am!I have decided to call the basic denominations Sovreighns and the bills scrip.

I have no idea what to call the money in my setting. "Credits" strikes me as cliche, and "GP" (which is short for "gold peices" I beleive) is too "game-y". What do? I have been leaning towards "scrip" or "sovreigns". The money follows the standard base-10 (I know the UK does something different, although it seems to be set up specifically to mess with non-British).
