Yeah, that's pretty terrible.

In my opinion, there are two reasonably good options:

As the sponsor of the original YKKTW, I will weigh in, for whatever weight that carries.

I did not and still do not like Bored To Sleep for two reasons: 1. it could encompass things like someone falling asleep while doing math homework, which really isn't the same thing, and 2. it ignores the person being boring, when that person is really the main focus of the trope. The thing that makes this a commonly used trope is the embarrassment of the speaker(s)/dancer(s)/mime(s).

I did not and still do not like Nap Inducing Speech. It doesn't matter that technically the word speech could mean banter/talking/, Nap Inducing Speech will be naturally interpreted by anyone by default as meaning a lecture/sermon/homily. It's an example of something that technically correct but terrible in practice. Plus it still restricts the boring person to be a speaker, and I never once considered this trope to require the boring person to be actually speaking.

I like Bore Them To Sleep, however. It is exactly the right turn of phrase to encompass this trope exactly. It emphasizes the boring person, not the sleepy person, and it communicates that the victim falls asleep as a result of some action by this person. It doesn't limit it to speaking, so it allows mime and interpretive dance and sex. It *does* rule out falling asleep doing math homework.

Thank you to the person who suggested it. Where were you win the YTTKW thread?

^^ The trope doesn't need to be broadened, really. I suggested things like speak/speech/monologue for the lack of being able to think of a more general word, and because the vast majority of cases were going to be actual speaking. I never considered mimes to be immune to this trope. grin

That's a good point for Bore Them To Sleep.

[up][up] Actually, I was the one who suggested Nap-Inducing Speak. And Bore Them To Sleep. ;)

So, for future reference, this kind of this kind of thing is easier to avoid if you just make your topic broad from the get go. Don't have a page for bored to sleep, why not make one for all such ways that could happen, be it math homework, speeches or reading the trope repair shop?

Come to think of it, we really don't have Bored To Sleep yet.
