... I feel cheated.

Well the series presumably isn't half over, so there might be some sort of horrible twist. What's that saying, die a hero or live long enough to become a villain?

I'm just too happy with how this episode played out.

Hot damn, Togo's Mankai is ballin'.

And the official website had this world building detail: http://yuyuyu.us/story/index.php

So something world defining happened. I'm expecting a bombshell truth.

Damn it. I lost money because of this

Either Karin has got to go because she doesn't level up (which is admittedly a petty reason) or one of the sisters. Those two sharing a scene in the OP looks awkward

It was good. And I really hope no one ends up dying the entire series. The twist could be something else. Maybe the vertexes were good guys and the heroes will end up fighting against Shinju-sama or something.

Also, if Yuuna and Togo don't end up kissing before the end of the series, I will be very cross.

Episode 5:

  • All-out Vertex Offensive start!
  • Mankai Mode's all kinds of awesome. Once again, Togo wins Best Design.
  • The Combined Vertex's signature move reminds me of the Final Countdown Spell Card. ...So final.tongue
  • Darn, that pyramid was huge. Must've had an ego as big as Puck's.tongue
  • Aw, that Togo/Yuuna moment was sweet.waii ...Also, good thing Togo didn't use up all of her power. Otherwise, the writing would've been on the wall for them. Whew.
  • Fu has the best one-liners.
  • And so, all 12 Vertices are down. But at a great price. You four heroes, your sacrifice for the world will not be forgotten...!! Yes, yes, they still live. No need to tell me that.tongue
  • Heheheh, Karin really loves them.smile
  • Looks like the Vertex were Zodiac-themed. Since Karin didn't Mankainote ... wild mass guessWhen's the 13th Vertex coming to be that Extra Stage Boss?wild mass guess

Also, the preview says something about "the side-effects of using Mankai", or something like that. I'm personally hoping it will be something embarassing.

...We're five episodes in. And it was actively baiting us.

This came up in another thread concerning people's expectations that a seemingly bright and cheery show is most definitely going to have a darker turn and deaths due to the influence of Madoka Magica. So I got to wondering, has Madoka influenced you as a viewer to expect character deaths at certain scenes? Is Yuki Yuna deliberately baiting us a lot or is it just playing the magic battle girl story straight and it's our own "post-PMMM" glasses showing us things that aren't there?

[up] Like I said the other thread. I think the AgK author has more to do with the expectation than anything else. This isn't as obviously PMM inspired as that ridiculous tarot anime, so I'm not sure there would be that much expectation if we did't know who wrote it.

I guess you could say PMM kinda opened the door though to people considering it.

Episodes 4 and 5 were like 50% death flags

But looking at other post-Madoka Mahou Shoujo anime might be informative. Was anyone expecting the Vividred girls to die?

See, aside from aesthetics I never understood the comparisons to Madoka. Yeah there's magical girls that risk dying, but that's most of the magical girl warriors. Remember, Madoka opened up to a torn up being even more destroyed as Homura fought a hopeless battle against an unstoppable enemy. There was some hope coming from an adorable rascal, but for the most part it was pretty bleak. So I never understood why people were surprised it went dark, even if the how was surprising.

Yuki Yuna does not have any of that. Sure there's hints towards darker details, and it can still turn gory and super despair, but this doesn't seem to be that kind of show. It's a lightheaded MG series with better than normal action and music. Tonally and thematically it's closer to Pretty Cure than Madoka. Now there's certainly going to be a twist (unless we're really just going to get 6 more SOL episodes), but that doesn't mean everyone is going to go crazy and die. So while the show may be loosely influenced by Madoka, I don't see much cause for direct comparisons.

Your preferences are not everyone else's preferences.

I forgot to give my own opinion. I wasn't aware that the Ag K author was also doing Yuki Yuna until well after I had watched the first four episodes. Or maybe I did, and just forgot. Either way, it wasn't a factor in how I perceived the show.

I didn't watch Vividred past the second episode, but yes, I was expecting someone to die.

And yes, I had initially labeled this show as the next Madoka and expected someone to bite when I first started watching. Then I got to thinking, "That's just what the writers want me to think!" so then I figured everyone would live. Then I thought, "But maybe they're just going to lure me into a false sense of security and sucker punch me when I least expect it!"

And now I don't know what to think.

I definitely agree that Madoka was darker and more ominous from the first episode than this was in five episodes. But I still don't feel like this series is so light-hearted that there's absolutely no chance of anything seriously bad happening to anyone. There's a lot of mysterious circumstances going on in the background.

The obvious bait-and-switch this episode could be lampshade hanging that "nobody dies in this show, calm your tits" OR it could be luring us into a false sense of security like [up] mentioned.

Probably the former, but it's still morbidly interesting to imagine how it could go dark.

p.s. Wonder what kind of tragedy happened on Earth due to Shinju-sama world being damaged so much.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

It's gotten to the point where one of the ANN reviewers claimed everyone thought one of the characters was going to die because she looked a bit like Mami. (Despite looking nothing like her at all.)

All blondes look alike, dontcha now?

Actually, yeah though, I pegged Fu as the Mami of the show and was wondering when she'd die by the end of episode one.

Something I'm wondering about is the fairies— They have simultaneously too much and too little presence. They're character unique and have various quirks, but never get a gag or two per episode at most. And mascot creatures have been found to be one of the most disposable Magical Girl tropes

- The side-effects of Mankai: vision loss, speech loss, taste loss, hearing loss...

- With the power of the eyepatch, Fu becomes FULL CHUUNI!

- I thought the cat was adopted by the family that was fostering him.

- Bizarrely enough, my headphones lost output in one side while I was watching this so I felt like Togo-san. o_o

- Come on, Karin, don't go tsun-tsun on us again!

Episode ended rather optimistically, and next episode looks like a fun one as well, if a bit racy.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

Actually, they are checking to see if they are changelings.

I guess you have to do the Chunni thing if you get an eyepatch.

Only the sister seem to get side effects. And I'm not sure we would notice in Itsuki's case if she hadn't [[spoiler: not] told us.

Hero withdrawal sucks. Could have let them keep the app I would think.

Togo and Yuna got effects also. And Karin seems to have been re-assigned

Chunni-Fu is great.

I really have no idea what to make of this series.

This show is one of the most unnerving things I've watched. It keeps suggesting that things are about to get much worse, even if nothing particularly bad has happened so far

Next episode is titled "Idyllic Happiness", which I'd normally say couldn't possibly end well, but I really don't know what to make of this show

[up]I would imagine Episode 7 would be another Slice of Life episode, keeping with the show's theme of alternating between magical battles and everyday shenanigans. Part of me suspects that something horrible will happen at the end of the episode...and if not, then something horrible will happen at the end of the episode after that.

The final four episodes will then parallel the final four episodes of Madoka.

Episode 6. In which the fighting is over.

Didn't take her for a chuuni. Well, I did take her for playing around like that. And of course there's a spoilsport. All in good fun. She's rather relaxed about it, though.

So, people in this thread hope they won't get better?

Vision, voice, taste, hearing, nothing. I wonder which is worse?

Cute girl walking out of the classroom.

Of course she's pick an eyepatch like that.

Why can't they discuss stuff with three people? Only takes two to argue, after all.

One sister looks like she's melting, and the other writes she is.

Who was that sign shown to?

As an endavor at a deflection against an inquisitive mindset, using a copious amount of excessively protacted nouns is an excellent methodology, and reaches its maximum effectivity in opposition to individuals in possession of lesser cerebrums.

Togo has a nice smile.

She's first now realising it could be an after effect of Mankai, especially considering what they said about it earlier?

That's quite the skillful typist we have there.

There's one person who believes she's not hungry all the time, and that person is reaching for a snack.

Next episode is called "Idyllic Happiness". It's involves bathing. It can only end well.

It's certainly not hoping things will fall apart, but them dumping so much ominous foreshadowing episode after episode, while things only seem to be getting better for our heroes.
