So what to do about the Signature Game Weapon ykttw?
MAX POWER KILL JEEEEEEEEWWWWWThat makes sense.
Some games blur the lines, though, like Tales: The only time the "early/weak" weapons are shown is in the anime cutscenes and box art, since those can't change themselves. Regular cutscenes animated with the game's own graphics show the currently-equipped weapon, just as in-battle animation shows the equipped weapon.

Signature Game Weapon sounds way too specific in my opinion.
All of the examples sound like they are actually a class/race/character's Weapon Of Choice or the exact Signature Weapon trope we're talking about. Very few of those examples are associated solely with the game as a whole and not specifically with the character or race/class that wields them.
Agreed.
So far I think we got
- Signature Weapon - A character's signature weapon, based around plot details, promotional art, named weapon, etc.
- Weapon Of Choice -Mostly Game specific about weapon classes. Subtropes of this need to have personality elements connected to the weapon IE Staff Chick which are Staff users and Archers, trash most of the current ones.
- Starting Signature Weapon - Subtrope of both, a game with Weapon Of Choice mechanics has their starting weapon be their signature weapon. possibly due to limited non-combat character models FMV required weapons and so on.
EDIT: Class or race based Weapon Of Choice could actually work as a subtrope.

National Weapon should be related too
MAX POWER KILL JEEEEEEEEWWWWWInspired by a certain ykttw, I think Weapon Of Choice should be named Weapon Stereotypes instead (like Animal Stereotypes).
MAX POWER KILL JEEEEEEEEWWWWWThat is a terrible mess of a page and one of the worst pages on the wiki. It should never have been launched. It should not be a template for anything other than what not to do.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickEr. Wow. Unless I'm confusing this for a different page, I was around for that YKTTW, and I do not remember it being that messy when we were working on it. Also, I distinctly remember it being a national/cultural animal thing. I have to agree, though, that it's not a very good page to be taking cues from.
There doesn't seem to be a YKTTW linked to it, and there's no sign at all that it's about specific cultures, but we're getting off topic. That page needs it's own clean up effort. If you have a link to the YKTTW, please PM it to me.

Weapon Stereotypes would be a different page really, Weapon Of Choice really should be about weapon classes, mostly character specific weapon classes and possibly a sub/sister trope work specific weapon traits like say Final Fantasy XII with Axes always do random damage or Ninja Swords work off the magic stat.

The second paragraph suggests it ("compare the character to an animal for which the audience's culture projects certain personality traits") but I could be confusing this with another, actual YKTTW with a similar theme.
I thought this was the one about certain nations/cultures being associated with certain animals (Americans=Eagles, French=frogs, Japanese=Bunnies, Russians=Bears, that sort of thing), but maybe they're just thematically similar. In any case, I don't have a link. DAN's "certain YKTTW" might be the one I'm thinking of, I dunno.
In any case. Messy page, not a good template. Moving on...
the ykttw that inspired me is actually called Instrumental Stereotypes, if you're wondering.
It's about how someone is judged based on what instruments they specialize in (almost like the current Weapon Of Choice page.)
P.s I think you think that the ykttw I meant was "National Animal Stereotypes" just cuz I mentioned Animal Stereotypes.
MAX POWER KILL JEEEEEEEEWWWWWBumping since it's been like a month since anyone spoke.
Abnormal Ammo is probably a sub-issue of this thread, and has it's own TRS to repair quickly:

Will be reviewing this before ending that thread.

Bumping so this can stay open.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!I'm not sure if this thread will necessarily survive the 2016 purge, but early pages inspired me to write a YKTTW for Weapons Of The Trade. (tools from a profession used as weapons) link
Link to TRS threads in project mode here. There are a lot of ZCE riddled "tropes" that would be much better served being merged into that trope than just lists of people who hit people with fish.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI still think we should go at it from the Signature Weapon and Signature Weapon Category for RP Gs angle as well as combat styles with said weapons but it's way way too much work I think to do it all.
I kinda let the topic did because I really don't know where to start...
Edit: move this to long term projects? This topic is just like the appearance trope topic there.

Yeah, move this to Long-Term Projects like the appearance tropes thread.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!I'll move this.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickWell, now that this is no longer in TRS, it looks like it's safe from the New Year's Purge.
Join the Five-Man Band cleanup project!Let's get started on something: Chainsaw Good.
~@shimaspawn brought this up early in the thread that, as written, it's not a trope. I think we should rebrand it to her suggestion of Chainsaw Weilding Madman, which is a trope.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?
^^ I think the added distinction (a Signature Weapon that is also one of the earliest and/or weakest in the game) is significant enough to support a full Sub-Trope, especially since the gameplay-related nature would likely restrict it to video and tabletop games only, whereas Signature Weapon would be a story trope.
