Heh, Macron being a target of the far right (it's Philippot, of course, who criticized him for that - since he is in the media 24/7...) is a good sign for him more than anything. If the FN does not ignore him, it means that he is a threat - indeed, he is more likely to crush MLP in a duel than Fillon is.

[up]Can he use that to prop himself up as the "best left" candidate.

[up][up]He has to if he wants to have the slightest chance to reach the second round. Otherwise too many votes will go the the PS candidate by simple inertia, which will very probably lead to neither Macro nor the PS candidate reaching the second round. Then again it also depends on who the PS candidate ends up being.

He doesn't really need anything right now to be that, considering who he is running against.

The proper spelling should be "only socially progressive guy with a shot at being elected".

Whoof, yeah, that's better, my blood pressure is decreasing now.

On a more serious note, it looks like there's a voting booth not too far away from my parents' home for the primaries of the left. That's great, at least I'll be useful for something in 2017.

I dunno if I will vote in the "left-wing" primary. On the one hand, (most of) those guys are the closest to my political opinions, on the other hand...

  • neither Macron, nor Mélenchon or the ecologists are there - you can debate whether X or Y is from the center, left or far-left, but the primary would be more meaningful with all of them participating
  • they have no chances of winning at that point, and giving weight to the primary by voting would only give them a false hope.

I like Peillon or Hamon (and I can't say I know much about Pinel, but she wants to legalize marijuana which is fine in my book). They just have zero chance of being elected. Valls has even less than that considering he was PM for the last three years, plus if I had to pick I'd rather go with Macron who has the same program but looks like a nicer person. And I can't stand Montebourg who keeps finding new ways to be a condescending sexist.

In fact, she should marry Trump, they deserve each other.

I mean, there's always hope. But we still need to look at the pattern here. Brexit. Trump. Now her. All political calamities that were never supposed to happen. And she's actually leading in the polls now?

Not to mention now she's probably actually going to have the US helping her, once Trump is in power, because Trump is Putin's dog and Putin has made his goals clear with regards to European leadership. The fact that I think America is going to be systematically undermining liberal democracy in Europe soon makes me more sick than I can say.

She is leading first round polls. In the second round, she is still soundly beaten by Fillon - and it would be worse with Macron. It is much more significant than Trump-Clinton ever was.

Also we don't have electronic voting, making hacking slightly more difficult, I'd say. But you can bet that sputnik news and other crappy news sources like that are going to roll for MLP...unless Fillon manages to convince Putin that he can also be an ally.

Because let us not forget that two people endorsed Fillon this week. Mr 0.3% Copé, and Bachar Al-Assad (after a Russia-enthusiast Fillon supporter visited him no less). So I am unsure Putin would favor MLP over him...but I cannot say which one would be the worst calamity for France anyway.

Le Pen will probably only get significant help from Moscow, the election is in a few months and Trump probably won't have time to set up an operation to influence the election even if he wanted to.

Besides, overt support from Trump might actually hurt her, given Trump's approval ratings in any country that isn't already a illiberal democratic cesspit.

Is the French media talking about the Russia-Trump connection? You'd think that would turn more non-US voters away from the right. After all, if there was ever an ugly American, it's Trump.

[up] My understanding is that the French at least aren't nearly as opposed to Russia as most other European countries. Probably because they share a common "natural" (in geographic terms) enemy. (Germany)

Julep Since: Jul, 2010
#699: Jan 13th 2017 at 1:19:05 AM

Huh, no. Actually, the extremes try to ignite the France-Germany rivalry, but everyone else is perfectly fine with the Germans. But it is true that Trump is more likely to make people run away than Putin is, if only because I can't picture him sitting well with either the catholic right or the progressive left. Plus flaunting your wealth isn't quite seen the same way here as it is in the US.

Thing is, both Trump and Putin are likely to support Le Pen, and while Putin can be subtle, I doubt anything the Orange Goblin brings can help her. I can picture Putin shifting towards a Fillon support, as he is also sympathetic towards Russia...while it is a win-win situation between the two for him, if he openly supports MLP, it might make Fillon less enclined to be nice in the future - and unlike MLP, Fillon can afford not having Russia's support on the international scene (Russia has been financing the FN for a while now). So if Putin can be pragmatic enough to take an ally over a puppet, I assume he will go for Eyebrows-Man, or at least refrain from openly endorsing MLP.

On a historic note, Germany has for the longest time been several degrees of magnitude less of a rival to France than England. Western Europe just tended to be less rabidly anti-communist than the US, as far as Russia is concerned.

One can hope that being forced to pick between the racist plague and the imperialistic cholera will lead politicians to look towards Europe for a change, instead of blaming it for every single thing going wrong in the country as has become he norm the further you are from the center.

[up] I sometimes wonder: with all the time and resources he devotes to screwing over other countries, how does Putin find the time to manage Russia? There are only so many hours in a day, and I'm sure he devotes several of them to wrestling bears and horseback riding without a shirt.
